Maizey

After only getting lost twice, I finally found my way back home. We only moved in three days ago and I was still getting used to maneuvering the unfamiliar roads. It was a thirty minutes drive from Greyback Industries to our home in Covington, but, today, it was more like an hour and thirty minutes.

“Maze?” A male voice called from somewhere in the house. I stumbled over the boxes in the living room and found my brothers in the kitchen.

“I thought you two were supposed to be unpacking?” I frowned at my brothers, looking around, “It looks the same as when I left.”

“We got distracted.” Matthew laughed, holding up a beer.

“Very distracted.” Nicholas agreed, drinking from his own bottle of ale.

“We’re never going to be moved in with you two getting distracted all the time.” I rolled my eyes.

“How was your meeting?” Matthew asked.

“Good, I start in two weeks.” I started unpacking one of the kitchen boxes.

“That’s plenty of time to unpack!” Nicholas said, shoving the box away from me.

“Seriously, Nicky?” I groaned, reaching for the box again. Just then, Matthew’s phone rang. He rolled his eyes at us before answering it,

“Hey, man, thanks for the call back.” Matthew walked away as he took the call.

“Stop it, Nicky!” I yelled as he held the box out of my reach.

“Jump for it, jump for the box, Maze.” He smirked. I glared and punched him square in the balls. He dropped the box and I caught it with a grin.

“Asshole.” I laughed.

“Jesus, Maze, low blow.” He groaned.

“What are you two morons doing?” Matthew came back into the kitchen.

“She hit me in the balls!” Nicky whined.

“You deserved it.” I said, casually putting away the kitchen utensils.

“You probably did.” Matthew shrugged.

“You always take her side!” Nicky pouted.

“Why are you such a child?” I narrowed my eyes on the middle child.

“Knock it off, you two, or I won’t tell you my news.” Matthew threatened.

“What news?” Nicky stopped his bickering.

“We’re going to a party tonight.” Matthew announced.

“Hell yeah we are!” Nicky cheered, fist bumping our eldest brother.

“We’ve been here for three days, how do you have a party invite already?” I rolled my eyes at my brothers.

“An old friend from school lives around here.” He shrugged.

“From Chicago?” I asked in surprise. Matthew went to the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago, Illinois before transferring to Stanford with me for a career in architecture.

“Yeah, he was in for computer programming, so you should like him.” Matthew chuckled.

“And he lives here?” I narrowed my eyes at him suspiciously.

“He’s from here. He went to Chicago to get away for a while. I think he came back here and went to Georgia Tech to get his master’s. I called him up when we moved in.” Matthew explained.

“And now he’s having a party?” I asked. Nicky was already back wearing his party clothes and a shitty grin on his face.

“He has parties all the time. His family is wealthy, they own a lot of land in the woods called the reservation. It’s like a private tribal community or something. I think his family even owns the company you’re working for.” Matt shrugged.

“Well then I definitely can’t go.” I started unpacking another box.

“Why not?” Matt argued but Nicky yelled over top of him,

“Party pooper!”

“I can’t be seen partying with my boss. Do you know what that would look like?” I said with a huff.

“Nobody is going to care about that.” Matt sighed.

“People care about everything. Do you have any idea the kind of rumors they would spread about me? The new girl partying with her boss?” I protested. S~ᴇaʀᴄh the ꜰindNʘvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“Maizey.” Matt shook his head at me, sighing, but said nothing else.

“So, no to the party then?” Nicky was pouting.

“You guys go, I’m fine.” I faked a smile, “I have a bunch of unpacking to do anyway.” I motioned around to all the boxes.

“Are you sure?” Matt looked at me.

“Positive. When’s the party?” I asked.

“Later tonight.” Matt said.

“Better go get ready then or Nicky will leave without you.” I laughed at Nicky who was already working on his pregame.

“Nicky, you better slow down. I’m not carrying your drunk ass home.” Matt snatched the beer bottle from Nicky’s hand.

“Hey!” Nicky shouted, running after him. I shook my head at my brothers and continued to unload boxes in the kitchen.

A little after 7, the boys were ready to leave for the party.

“You sure you’re okay here by yourself?” Matt asked.

“I’m sure, Matty, I’m fine.” I kissed his cheek and shoved him out the door.

“We’ll be back….”

“Late! Early! Who knows?” Nicky yelled from the car and Matt rolled his eyes.

“Call if you need anything.” He said before shutting the door, “And lock the door.” He reminded me.

I did as I was told and made sure the house was secured before settling back down in the living room. I was used to my brothers’ overbearingness, I was their baby sister and they were always looking out for me. Matt was especially overprotective. He became the sole guardian of Nicky and I when he was still in college.

I flipped through the popular movies on Netflix before settling on something that looked funny. I pulled a blanket from one of the many unpacked boxes and draped it over myself.
