Chapter 21 

The next day, Annabelle realized she was alone on the bed when she woke up. Naturally, her posture was different from the one she was in before falling asleep. Instead, she lay horizontally across the bed and had the dark colored pillow she detestet ir arms. Of course, her dislike for it remained. Without hesitation, she tossed it away and grabbed her phone to look at the time before gingerly getting down from the bed. 

While she was brushing her teeth, an issue dawned upon her all of a sudden, dispelling all her lingering drowsiness. “It’s fine to sleep until eight in the morning when I’m still single, but I’m married now! What will the Walkers think of me if I wake up this late? Will they think I’m a lazy woman?” she wondered worriedly. 

That possibility prompted her to wash herself up quickly. Not daring to waste any more time, she put some skincare products onto her face, changed her clothes, then rushed downstairs. 

Annabelle looked youthful in an oversized white sweater and a black knee–length skirt. 

As soon as she arrived downstairs, she saw Mary and apologized embarrassedly, “I’m sorry for waking up too late!” 

“Oh no! What are you talking about?” The latter walked toward her and held her hands before continuing, “It’s normal for an expectant mother to sleep more. Plus, we don’t have such rules in our family. You can sleep as long as you wish! You only need to come downstairs and have your meal when you’re hungry” 

Mary was a mother of four, after all. Therefore, she had some experience in such matters. By forcing the children to wake up at a set time, it was tormenting for both parties. Instead, she decided to give her children freedom. 

As it turned out, it was a great way of enhancing the parent–child relationship. 

“Don’t stress out! This is your home now, so you can do whatever you want!” Mary announced. 

Annabelle felt that Lucas and his siblings were fortunate to have such a warm and gentle mother. In reality, she was also quite lucky in the past but not 

anymore. 

After greeting the Walkers one by one, she had to go to the hospital with Lucas. 

Worried about her, Mary followed them to the door. 

“Don’t be foolish. Bring her to your office after the checkup, okay?” 

Lucas was speechless. 

“Hey, I’m talking to you. Did you hear me?” Seeing his expression, Mary kicked him and continued, “Annabelle hasn’t had her breakfast yet. After the checkup, bring her to grab some food. You know what to do, don’t you?” 

“Yes, yes!” he responded while helping Annabelle take her gloves. However, the sensation he felt was weird. “Why are the gloves wet?” He asked. 

“Are they wet?” Mary’s attention was shifted in an instant. She took the gloves from Lucas and felt them in her hands. They were indeed damp. “I’ll look for another pair of gloves for you now. You can wear them first.” 

With that, she turned around to search for a new pair of gloves. 

“No, it’s fine, Mom. I can keep my hands warm by tugging them in my pockets,” said Annabelle. Then, she placed her hands inside her pink puffer jacket. 

However, there was something furry inside her supposedly empty pocket. Puzzled, she took it out to see what it was. The moment she recognized the thing in her hand, she was petrified. 

“Ah! R–Rat!” 

Annabelle feared rats, snakes, and other invertebrates the most. 

Thus, she turned as white as a sheet when she dug out a rat from her pocket.

Chapter 21 

Mary and Lucas had a fright, but they feared for Annabelle, not because they were afraid of the rat. 

Annabelle was pregnant, after all. 

Donald and Susan rushed over upon hearing the commotion. 

After Annabelle tossed the rat in her hand, her body went helplessly limp. With his quick reflexes, Lucas pulled her into his embrace, preventing her from falling to the floor. When his gaze landed on the rat on the floor, his eyes turned so cold that frost seemed to form. 

Sensing her trembling body, he held her waist with one hand and patted her back with another. It was a rare occasion for him to comfort someone so gently. “You’re fine now. Don’t be scared.” 

At that moment, Donald picked up the rat and discovered that it was only a true–to–life toy rat, not a real one. The Walkers exchanged glances at each other with grim expressions. 

Mary, who was usually calm and collected, flew into a rage and said coldly, “I’ll call her…” Before she could finish her sentence, she was distracted by Annabelle’s groans. 

“Um…” 

Lucas asked anxiously, “What’s wrong?” 

The agony in Annabelle’s voice was evident as she tugged at his clothes and said, “My belly hurts!” 

“I’ll call the emergency number!” Mary did not have time to confront the wrongdoer, so she rushed into the living room in a panic. 

“Ask the hospital to get ready. I’ll send her there.” While speaking, Lucas scooped Annabelle up in his arms and strode out of the house. 

Despite their wish to follow him to the hospital, Donald and Susan were cognizant that they were unable to help him in any way and might even exacerbate the situation if they tagged along. Hence, they could only order Brenda to assist Lucas. 

Hearing Susan’s instructions, Brenda abandoned her work on hand and ran out without bothering to put on outerwear. 

Things were indeed more convenient for Lucas with Brenda’s help. Having placed Annabelle, whose face had turned pale and drawn from the agony, in the back seat, Lucas ordered Brenda to sit beside Annabelle to support her. Then, he immediately walked to the driver’s seat, started the engine, and sped toward the hospital. 

The hospital made all the preparations as soon as they received the call. Once Lucas‘ car arrived, the medical staff pushed the stretcher over. Without others‘ help, he carried Annabelle out from the back seat and gently placed her on the stretcher. 

When he let the nurse push her into the building, he did not forget to inform the chief physician of the gynecology and obstetrics department of Annabelle’s situation. 

The latter gave a reply of acknowledgment to Lucas‘ words and told him not to worry before sprinting into the treatment room. 

It was impossible for Lucas not to worry about Annabelle. 

He stood outside the treatment room with a stony countenance, exuding an intimidating aura. Brenda dared not make a sound at the sight of his expression, even though she was freezing. 

She continued shivering there without a jacket until Mary came.. 

Mary brought a coat for Brenda. Seeing that the latter was so cold that her lips had turned pale, she immediately said, “You can go home first. Tell his grandparents that everything is fine.” 

Brenda gave an affirmative response after hearing her words. 

Only after watching her leave did Mary turn to look at her son and inquire about her daughter–in–law’s condition. 

“Her condition is fine for now,” he answered flatly. “She has to be placed under observation today. If nothing goes wrong, she’ll be discharged 

tomorrow.” 

Chapter 21 

Mary could finally heave a sigh of relief after hearing his reply. “Thank goodness that nothing bad happened to Annabelle!” she thought. 

However, Lucas‘ expression remained grim. The chief physician of the gynecology and obstetrics department educated him on the various consequences of the expectant mother having a terrible fright during a pregnancy. It ranged from the growth of the fetus being affected to a threatened miscarriage. None of the situations were what he wanted to see. 

“I’ll move out with Annabelle after she’s discharged,” he said calmly. 

Mary’s expression changed when she heard him. “You can’t do that!”
