Chapter 27 

“Let’s go together. I also want to check it out, but I don’t know if Anna is okay with it.” Ashley appeared unexpectedly, smiling gently at Annabelle as she spoke softly. 

Annabelle couldn’t help but feel apprehensive when she observed Ashley’s behavior. She was about to say something when she was interrupted by 

Nathan. 

“Ashley, I think it’s best that you don’t go. You and Anna aren’t compatible with each other. If the two of you start to bicker at their new house, you will embarrass the Ross family in front of Lucas. Mom, do you agree with me?”

They looked at Nathan with sharp eyes, as if they were pondering whether or not his words were intentional. 

However, Nathan appeared naive when he was stared at by his sister and mother. He seemed to be telling them with his expression that he was only doing it for their own good. 

“Come and visit next time.” Annabelle did not realize what Nathan had on his mind. However, she did not have the intention of inviting Ashley to her house as she knew that her sister had feelings for her husband. Even if she was not smart, she would not do such a foolish thing like that. 

Hence, when Madeline and Ashley looked at her, she lowered her eyes and said indifferently, “We’ve just moved into the new house. It is still messy, 50 we cannot entertain guests yet.” 

“Oh, I see! That’s too bad! You go home with Lucas first, then. When you’re done tidying up the house, let me know. I’ll go and visit you,” Nathan said. 

“Sure,” Annabelle answered genuinely, raising her head to look at her brother. 

Hearing that, Nathan grinned happily.

Ashley looked at her sister intently and wondered, “I can feel that she doesn’t like me. Does it mean that she thinks I’m a threat? After all, Lucas married her not because they are in love, but because she is pregnant with his child.” Ashley’s gaze fell on Annabelle’s baby bump. If not for this child, the Walker family definitely would not allow Lucas to marry Annabelle. 

She thought, “Oh, yes! If only the babies didn’t exist. That would be great.” 

Annabelle started to get goosebumps from Ashley’s stare. Thus, she quickly said goodbye to them before turning to leave. 

After walking Annabelle to the door, Nathan saw that Lucas had put her luggage into the trunk. Seeing how the latter was standing at the entrance to fetch Annabelle, he felt relieved. 

“Anna, now that your belly is getting bigger, don’t come often. At least before the babies are born, it is best you don’t come back. If you need anything. just give me a call, and I’ll bring it to you,” said Nathan softly, lowering his head while holding Annabelle’s hand. 

He could still remember his mom’s tone when she said Annabelle did not deserve anything. He did not eavesdrop, but he happened to hear Ashley crying when he came out of the kitchen after getting some water. As he did not want them to feel embarrassed, he decided to wait until they left. However, he ended up hearing their conversation. 

Nathan exclaimed to himself, “I can’t believe Ashley likes Lucas and that Mom actually agreed to help her!” 

At that instant, his mind was blown by the information. 

He couldn’t understand how Ashley ended up liking Lucas. Furthermore, he didn’t know why his mother would help Ashley. 

He wanted to disclose what he knew to Annabelle, but he did not want to destroy any chance of the two sisters‘ reconciliation 

Hence, the only thing Nathan could do was to advise his sister not to come home often. The best plan was for her to stay away. He believed that with the passing of time, Ashley would lose her feelings for Lucas and, along with that, her intention to harm Annabelle. 

Chapter 27 

Annabelle paused for a while before finally replying with a nod and saying, “Okay” 

She did not ask how he would help her get things when he was going abroad soon. 

At that moment, Lucas came forward. 

“Lucas, please take good care of Anna. I’ll be leaving her in your care now!” Nathan said with a serious tone. 

Lucas raised his eyebrows. He didn’t have any ill feelings toward Nathan, but he also didn’t respond directly to Nathan’s request. He simply said, “She is my wife.” 

Deep inside, he thought, “Anyone who wants to bully my wife better think twice and make sure they have the ability to face the consequences.” 

Immediately, Nathan understood what Lucas meant. With that, he felt more at ease. 

After seeing them leave in their car, Nathan returned to the house. 

Sitting in the car, Annabelle felt a bit down. Before she went home, she was anxious but also a bit excited to go home. Since she had married into a good family, she would not embarrass the Ross family anymore. Thus, she thought that her father and mother would not be angry with her anymore. 

However, the reality crushed her nervous anticipation. Her parents still resented her, and her father only seemed happy to see Lucas. 

On top of that, she knew that Ashley had feelings for Lucas, and that put her in a difficult situation. She did not know how to deal with her sister. 

That was why she was quick to agree when Nathan asked her not to go home. 

“By the way, how are you planning to decorate our house?” Lucas asked while he was driving. 

His question brought Annabelle back to her senses. Instantly, she felt spirited. 

“I’ve bought the things we need already!” Her previous dejectedness was nowhere to be seen as she spoke excitedly. “I bought a lot – kitchenware, bedding, toilet seats, slippers, pajamas, and many other things. Don’t worry; I’ll make sure our house is decorated in a very cozy way. You’ll feel warm every time you come home!” 

As Lucas thought of her bedroom, which was mainly filled with pink and lacey stuff, he could not bring himself to entrust her to decorate their house.. However, when he saw how enthusiastic she was talking about it, he didn’t say anything else. He didn’t want her to feel depressed again. 

He thought, “Let it be pink, then! After all, she is my wife and the mother of my two children.” 

The doctor had told him that if a pregnant lady was not in a good mood, it would affect the baby’s development. Lucas was simply giving way to Annabelle for the sake of the babies. 

Their present residence was behind Pearl Building. The place was developed by the Pearl Group, and many of its employees stayed there. 

In fact, Lucas and Annabelle’s block was home to many of Pearl Group’s senior executives. 

Right when they reached home, Annabelle’s phone rang. She was told that there was a delivery for her. 

Immediately, Annabelle beamed. For the sake of convenience and efficiency, she had ordered many things online from shops in the same city. 

“Where are you going?” Lucas raised his eyebrows when he saw Annabelle walking toward the door. 

“The deliveryman is almost here. I’m going to open the door and help him with the elevator.” As a security measure, the residents of Pearl Condominium had to swipe a key card in the elevator in order to go to their respective floors. Outsiders could not come and go as they wished unless the owner used their key card. 

“I’ll go!” Lucas stood up. “Next time you are alone at home, don’t allow strangers to come up” 

“I’m not a child,” Annabelle muttered. Nevertheless, she stayed at the door and waited for Lucas to go with her.
