Chapter 4 

Annabelle was pregnant. It was a piece of news nobody had expected. Although she was cleared of the suspicion of hating her sister, it did not stop her parents from scolding and hitting her. 

At that moment, Annabelle was holding the lab report in a daze. No matter how hard the punches from her parents were, she did not give any reaction. 

Fortunately, Nathan held their irate parents back and protected Annabelle, who had yet to snap out of her trance. 

“Mom, calm down! If there is anything you want to say, let’s talk about it when we get home!” 

“You’re such a disgrace to the family! Why don’t you die, huh?” 

Braxton’s face went livid as he shifted his gaze away from Annabelle. He was afraid that he would beat her to death if he were to look at her for another second. As Nathan had blocked Madeline’s way, she sat on the bench in the corridor, covered her face, and started sobbing. “Is it not enough for our family to be embarrassed once? Why did something so humiliating happen to our family again? What have I done to deserve this?” 

“Dad, Mom, I’m sorry!” Annabelle grabbed onto the report tightly. It was apparent that the result was beyond her expectations. Staring at her angry father and sorrowful mother, she could not do anything but apologize to them. 

“Dad, Mom, let’s go home first,” suggested Nathan as he could not bear to watch Annabelle stand there despondently from being ignored by their parents. “I don’t get it. Why are they so angry? Annabelle is only expecting a child. It’s not like it’s the end of the world. Moreover, our family can afford to raise the child!” he wondered. 

Suddenly, Madeline stood up and glared at the sister and brother duo. “Go home? You must have your abortion now!” she snarled through gritted teeth and stormed off without looking back. 

Regarding Annabelle with a disappointed expression, Ashley remarked, “Annabelle, you… You’re too foolish!” Then, she went after Madeline as she was concerned about her. 

As for Braxton, he naturally did not stay back. Without saying a word, he left with his shoulder heaving from his pants. 

Annabelle sat on the bench and covered her eyes as though she was trying to block her tears from flowing outward. 

A while later, Nathan sat beside her. Noticing that her body was trembling, he reached his hands to hug her after a moment of hesitation. “Hey, don’t be afraid. I will always be here for you!”

It was a simple sentence, yet it caused her to bawl. Annabelle herself was perplexed as to why her peaceful life went off track all of a sudden. Everything was spiraling out of control.

It was not a weird scene for people to express their happiness or sadness in the hospital. As it was past working hours, Annabelle’s cries did not attract much attention from the crowd. 

After she had finished crying, the two went to the obstetrics and gynecology department. Although it was late, a doctor was still waiting for her because their friend had notified the doctor beforehand. 

With reddened eyes, Annabelle greeted the doctor. Just as she was about to consult the latter about abortion, Annabelle suddenly remembered that her brother was too young to listen to such things. Thus, she asked him to leave the room. 

However, Nathan did not agree with it, thinking, “Anna is a timid person. I’m sure she will be afraid if she listens to the doctor’s explanation on her own.” 

“I’ll stand right over here. I promise I won’t eavesdrop on your conversation. I’ll listen to some music!” he promised. 

“If I stay here, you will be able to see me once you turn around. I hope that will make you feel less anxious,” he thought. 

Annabelle did not insist on having him leave when she saw he had put on his earphones and was sitting at the side. 

Truth be told, she felt more at ease to have someone she was familiar with accompanying her. 

The gentle doctor explained the two methods of abortion, which were medical abortion and vacuum aspiration, to Annabelle in detail. Although each had its pros and cons, both would cause irreversible harm to the patient’s body. 

When Annabelle listened to the doctor’s narration of the various possible outcomes, her face turned ghastly pale from fright. 

“As you are only a few weeks into your pregnancy, you can choose either way. You should think thoroughly!” 

Annabelle nodded. However, she did not know which to choose. 

In reality, she was terrified of both methods and did not want to choose between them. At the same time, she knew it would not be suitable for her to give birth to the child. 

“I’ll go for v–vacuum aspiration!” replied Annabelle in a shaky voice after hesitating for a while. 

She thought, “Since I have to suffer anyhow, I will opt for the one that ends faster.”

“All right. I’ll make an appointment for you!” said the doctor gently while nodding. 

At last, the doctor confirmed the appointment for the abortion to be two days later. When Annabelle looked at the date, she did not know whether she should breathe a sigh of relief or feel sad about it. She wanted to get over the matter as soon as possible, but at the same time, she felt like delaying it. 

After Annabelle and Nathan thanked the doctor, they returned home. Naturally, her family members treated her coldly. In the meantime, Annabelle could still hear Ashley comforting their parents. It was unknown whether the former was immune to the situation or did not have the energy to think about it, but the latter’s voice did not evoke the slightest reaction in her. 

“You still have evening classes tonight. You should go back to campus earlier,” Annabelle said to Nathan softly after he sent her back to her room. 

Upon hearing that, Nathan shook his head and rejected her suggestion firmly. “No. I will stay at home to accompany you these few days!” 

“Hey, it isn’t a normal practice to take leave after only going to classes for a few days,” said Annabelle casually. Then, she smiled and continued, “I bet you have done pretty well in your boot camp. Look at your tanned skin! However, you should 

pay attention to your studies. Didn’t you promise me that you would be the most educated dandy?”

Nathan stared at his sister. At that moment, he really wanted to tell her that her smile was ugly. 

However, he kept quiet when he recalled the reason behind her forced smile. 

“Are you going to disobey me?” Annabelle asked fiercely when he did not answer after a long time. With her arms akimbo, it seemed like she was furious at him. 

“I will… take a leave on the ninth!” Nathan thought for a second and gave in. “I will accompany you on your surgery day!” 

At his response, Annabelle felt like crying. Afraid that she would start bawling if she spoke, she dared not verbalize an answer, merely nodding with her eyes widened. 

“That’s settled then! Go in and get some rest. I’ll go back to school now!” Nathan urged, then turned and left. 

Annabelle was worried that he would turn back to look at her, so she quickly wiped away her tears. 

As expected, Nathan, who reached the landing, looked over his shoulder and glanced at her. Quickly, she flashed him a wide grin and did not forget to wave her hands. 

Nathan was stunned when he noticed that she was trying her best to grin at him even though her eyes were misty. Coming back to his senses, he smiled and waved back at her. After that, he turned around and went down the stairs with a solemn expression. 

Annabelle’s parents treated her as if she was transparent for two days. On the third day, she took a taxi to the hospital alone. As soon as the car came to a stop, she saw Nathan waiting for her at the hospital entrance. 

That brought a smile to her face. After paying the taxi driver, she got out of the car but almost fell because her legs gave 

way. 

Nathan ran over to her and asked with a worried expression, “Are you okay?” 

Annabelle shook her head. “I’m fine. It’s just that my legs are a bit numb!” 

The two of them entered the hospital, and Annabelle was only brought into the operating room after completing a series of checkups. As for Nathan, he waited outside the room anxiously.
