In Seville

Gabriel and Ginny had contacted Sara and Zackery, who had made their way back to Seville.

Sara and Zackery had chosen to stay in Seville. They felt, as Ginny did, that Flynn and Matthews were somewhat unlikely to try to finish a piece of work off for a dead employer. Flynn and Matthews hadn’t seemed keen anyway, and what advantage could they possibly gain from it.

So Sara and Zackery agreed to keep a watchful eye out, but otherwise to enjoy living in a city they both felt at home in.

And this was Gabriel and Ginny’s last evening with them. They had all eaten in a little place that Sara and Zackery liked. A nice meal followed by nice wine. The street lights had come on as the late afternoon lapsed into early evening. Waiters carried out candles in glass jars and placed them on their table.

“What are you going to do now?” Zackery asked.

“We always said we were doing this to try to get a STU for John’s wife,” Gabriel said. Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the ꜰindNʘvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“You would have to give it to her before her dementia set in,” Sara said.

Sara and Zackery both knew the story of John Cullen and his wife, Mary. Gabriel and Ginny had talked it through with them, as they tried to decide what best to do.

“But,” said Zackery, “if you go back and give a STU to Mary ... then if she lives longer, there is a serious likelihood that John’s life will significantly change.”

Gabriel and Ginny nodded. They had already talked about this.

“He might not, for example, go to the care home that you two guys met him in,” Zackery continued. “And if that happened, you guys might never meet.”

Sara looked across at Zackery. She looked like she wasn’t sure that Zackery’s thought process was helping Gabriel and Ginny.

“And then,” said Zackery, “... you know about all this stuff about time resolves any anomalies.”

“That’s the sort of thing that ACME INC tried hard to avoid,” Vicky said.

“I really have a bad feeling about this,” said Zackery.

“But,” said Ginny, “if we don’t go back and give a STU to Mary, what was the point of everything we did?”

“Well ... you did get rid of the bad guys,” Sara said, looking pointedly at Zackery.

“And you certainly saved our bacon,” said Zackery, “so ... whatever you two decide ... I’d like to propose a toast. To Gabriel and Ginny. To two good friends.”

Zackery lifted his wine glass to them. Sara clicked hers against his.

Gabriel and Ginny smiled, lifted their wine glasses likewise.

“To good friends,” Gabriel said.
