#72 “Deeper Secrets?”

Sophia and Alexander exchanged glances, both wearing a hint of embarrassment due to the surprising revelation. However, they managed to maintain their composure and not let their worries show on their faces.

Sophia offered a warm smile and raised her glass in a friendly greeting. In response, Alexander returned her smile and even added a playful wink, raising his own glass. The atmosphere in the room lightened up as the guests observed that Sophia and Alexander were on amicable terms despite their past history.

Caroline, perceiving the need to address the situation, decided to step forward and clarify matters before Alexander could speak.

“Alexander hasn’t always been the best husband in the past,” Caroline began with a touch of sincerity in her voice.” He was incredibly dedicated to his work and achieved a lot in a short time. However, in the pursuit of success, he sometimes lost sight of the most important things, especially his family. And by family, I don’t mean just relatives but the family he started with Sophia. I believe it hurt her, but I also know that the two of them can work out their differences because she’s a remarkable woman.” Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the Find ɴøᴠel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Sophia observed the unfolding scene from the sidelines, recognizing that, for the evening at least, she had seamlessly become a part of the Stone family plan. It was obvious to her that Caroline had invited her just so she and Alexander could be together again.

Sophia was not angry but rather entertained by the worry that crossed Alexander’s face when his mother spoke. Sophia couldn’t help but find him at least a little charming, seeing him embarrassed. She rarely saw Alexander show real emotions.

“Let’s not dwell on the past any longer. We’re here to celebrate your birthday, Caroline,” Sophia interjected, breaking the awkward silence that had settled over them.

She noticed Alexander sigh with relief as the other guests resumed their conversations, and the tension in the air began to dissipate. The party regained its lively atmosphere, and Sophia exchanged smiles and pleasantries with other attendees.

As the evening drew to a close, Caroline called for Sophia and Alexander to join her at a private table. Sophia and Alexander took their seats, but they avoided making eye contact, unsure of what their host had in mind.

In the hushed ambiance of their small gathering, silence hung in the air, and the discomfort returned. Caroline determined not to let the moment pass without resolution, turned to her son with a stern expression.

“Alexander, I went to great lengths to bring Sophia here tonight, and I haven’t seen the two of you engage in a meaningful conversation all evening,” she scolded, her tone demanding attention.

Sophia felt the weight of Caroline’s expectations and realized that their host was not about to let them off the hook. She had hoped to keep the evening light and celebratory, but Caroline had other intentions.

Alexander cleared his throat, finally meeting Sophia’s eyes briefly before turning to his mother. “Mother, I appreciate what you’ve done, but it’s not that simple. Sophia and I have a… complicated history.”

“I won’t beat around the bush, Sophia. Alexander’s actions during your marriage were inexcusable. He neglected you, and it wasn’t until your divorce that he realized what he had lost.”

Sophia realized that she couldn’t run away from this conversation for the first time, so she decided to share how she felt. “That’s true. I often felt like I was invisible in our marriage. You didn’t even know who I was, Alexander.

Alexander winced at her words but couldn’t argue with their truth. He had been so engrossed in his work and his own world that he had failed to truly see the woman he had married. “I’m deeply sorry for the pain I caused you, Sophia. I regret not being there for you.

Caroline gave her son a stern look before turning to Sophia. “Alexander’s lack of understanding is his own fault, but I hope you can find it in your heart to give him another chance. I’ve seen the change in him since your divorce, and I believe he’s genuinely willing to make amends.”

Sophia hesitated, her gaze locked with Alexander’s. She saw the sincerity in his eyes and the longing for a second chance.

Caroline continued, adopting a motherly tone. “Sophia, if he ever mistreats you again, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I want to ensure that you’re treated with the respect and care you deserve.”

Sophia appreciated the support and concern that Caroline expressed. She knew that the older woman genuinely cared about her well-being.

“It’s not about that, Caroline. Alexander was never rude to me; he just… well, he wasn’t there.”

“I know, Sophia. And I’m really sorry…. “Alexander began, his expression reflecting genuine remorse as he trailed off, leaving the sentence unfinished.

“I believe you; I don’t want an apology. You already apologized to me, Alexander, and I accepted it,” interrupted Sophia, her gaze now locking onto his.

“What can he do to deserve a second chance?” Caroline interjected, her usually warm and nurturing demeanor carrying a note of motherly concern, and her eyes searching Sophia’s for an answer.

Sophia looked from Caroline to Alexander, and she couldn’t help but see their sincere desire for change. She sighed, her shoulders relaxing as if she were letting go of some invisible weight. “Just let him be himself; I’ll judge if I like what I see,” Sophia replied, a subtle curve forming on her lips.

“Does this mean I get a second chance?” Alexander asked cautiously, a gentle smile tugging at his lips as if he were uncertain yet hopeful of Sophia’s response.

After a moment of contemplation, she spoke softly. “I’m willing to give it another try, Alexander. But as your mother said, if things don’t change, I won’t hesitate to walk away.”

Hearing this Caroline took off the heirloom bracelet she wore, its gleaming gems catching the soft light.

She turned to Sophia with a warm smile, her eyes reflecting genuine affection. “Sophia, dear, I’ve held onto this bracelet for years, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving to carry it forward. And now when I know you are willing to give Alexander a second chance I want to give it to you. You’re the true mistress of the family.”

Sophia looked at the bracelet, her expression both touched and shocked.” Caroline, I appreciate the sentiment, but I can’t accept this. I’ve moved on, and I have no intention of returning to the Stone family. Giving Alexander a second chance doesn’t mean that things will work out.

Caroline’s smile wavered, her affectionate expression shifting to one of concern. “But Sophia, you should understand that your grandfather had a much deeper connection to the Stone family than you might imagine. Your marriage wasn’t just a mere agreement between the older generation; there might be deeper secrets concealed within.”

Sophia’s brow furrowed as she absorbed Caroline’s words. “Deeper secrets? What are you talking about?”

Caroline leaned in closer, lowering her voice. “Your grandfather and Alexander’s grandfather were close, Sophia. There’s more to this story than you or I know. I’ve seen letters, old documents-pieces of a puzzle that have never quite fit together.”

Sophia’s curiosity was piqued, and a sense of intrigue crept into her voice.” Letters and documents? What do they say?”

Caroline shook her head, a shadow of uncertainty in her eyes. “I can’t be sure, and I’ve never dared to delve too deep into the family’s past. But I believe your grandfather and Alexander’s grandfather had their reasons for the engagement, and it might not have been just business.”

Sophia’s mind raced with questions and possibilities. She didn’t expect this revelation, and it opened a door to a part of her family’s history she’d never explored. “Caroline, if there’s more to the story, I need to know.”

Caroline nodded. “I’ll look into it, Sophia, just remember that the past has a way of shaping the present in unexpected ways.”
