ELEANOR

"What do you mean had?" I ask, meeting his gaze.

"I had a mate, but she...died." He said those words so slowly as if he would break if he went on too fast.

A gasp slipped from my lips so I brought my hands to my mouth. Alexander's mate is dead? "H-how?" I ask, suddenly feeling nervous to know the cause behind his mate's death. A mate's death could drive werewolves insane to the point of seeking their own demise. That is how serious it breaks you when your mate bond is forcibly torn apart. You love the other too much you won't be able to make it or accept that the other has gone. Looking at Alexander now, he looks perfectly fine and confident when he stood in the meeting room, but I certainly did not know he had lost his mate.

"Killed. Someone from an enemy pack. We're still failing at finding out who the killer is, so the case had since remained unsolved.” He looked at me unsure.

"Oh" Was all I ever was able to say.

Wait. If Alexander's mate died, then that means.

I'm not his real mate! And I won't be forced to kill him like the legend says!

This changes everything!

We fell into an awkard silence and I was secretly deliberating inside.

"I'm so sorry" I managed to say. I regretted feeling happy when he just told me his previous mate had died. I shouldn't be, because it gave me some advantage with my complicated circumstance. "Don't be"

Alexander gave me a small smile that looked slightly forced before turning on his heel to walk to the door.

But before he opened it to leave, he suddenly glanced over his shoulder to look at me in my spot where I stood gawking at him.

"By the way, don't tell anyone that. I have kept it a secret over the years, until now. Regarding the mate thing between us, I'll wait for your decision tomorrow. For now, get some rest. I hope that tomorrow I can introduce you to the pack as my official mate. Sweet dreams, princess" He winks then shot me on my heart again with his gorgeous smile before turning around to leave. I felt my knees go jelly as I dropped my butt on the hard floor once the door clicked.

“Ares, what should we do?" I asked my wolf out of desperation. I don't know whether I should accept Alexander as my mate. What if my curse takes effect to his pack? What if he finds out the truth? Will he still look at me in the same light?

I fell in a state of panic in that moment, suddenly realizing I couldn't breathe properly. My breathing quickened its pace and I placed a hand over my chest in a bid to ease the discomfort I was feeling “Maybe... Maybe we could give this pack a try.’ Ares says, sounding a little unsure but also excited. “But didn't we plan to leave here as soon as we get a chance?’

'I know, but think about it, Eleanor. He already had a mate. So the chances of the curse taking effect is relatively low"

All of a sudden I saw something slip towards me from under the door. A letter?

I pick it up and read the contents written in a writing I can barely understand.

TRY TO ESCAPE AND I WILL TAKE SABRINA'S HEAD.

Love, Dad.

My eyes widened at the letter I was gripping with my hand.

Suddenly I find myself realizing how I knew nothing about who my father really was. It turns out, I don't know anything about him after all. How evil he can be when it comes to realizing his ambition to achieve great power. Even if it means threatening and sacrificing his own daughter to get what he wants. The first time he hit me, I saw in his eyes how he was dead serious about using my curse. My hands tremble in fear and I wanted to shrink until I fade into dust and just disappear.

He knows.

He knows how close Sabrina and I were back in the day. Before Dad told the pack I was wolfless.

I can hear my heart hammer against my chest as I clutch my heart in a bid to keep my calm, but it did nothing but worsen my fears at the moment.

Even if Sabrina ignored me and acted like we never knew each other and became best friends, she was the only person who did not try and make my life miserable out of all the others.

I gripped the letter tighter, crumpling it in my hands until it turned into a small light ball. I guess then just for old times sake, I'll stay for a while until I figure my way out of this pack. Even if Alexander is not my mate, I'll never know if I could really bring this pack the worst misfortunes when I turn 18. This should only be temporary.

I heard Ares sigh as if in defeat.

“Fine Ares said before retreating to the back of my mind.

The next morning I woke up to the sound of knocking on the door. I groaned and forced my body to move out of the bed. Sliding down the sheets, I dragged my feet towards the door.

I turned the knob to open it and I was immediately met with a pair of light brown eyes.

"Good morning, Eleanor. Remember me?"

I squinted at him, realizing he was Elijah. Alexander's beta. He had dark brown hair that was shaved on the sides and tuffled on top, matching the color of his eyes just the same.

He smiles at me and lowers his head politely. I smile back but shyly.

"Yes, Elijah?" I reply.

"Sorry you have to see me instead of the Alpha.”

I shrug shaking my head.

"It's fine" I say, secretly wondering why he was here to greet me instead of Alexander, then pushing that thought away instantly.

Yesterday I was staring at his godlike body, and now this.

Get a grip on yourself Eleanor.

"I came to give you this. The whole pack will be down to meet the Alpha's mate at breakfast. Might be nice to give them a good impression, don't you think?" He quirks his brows at me and I cringe. He handed me a white box that appeared to contain a white dress inside it.

I didn't want to accept it at first, but the way Elijah was nudging the box over to me forced my hands to grip it.

Looking down at the box, I could already tell it was a really pretty dress. Except that I don't really want to wear it, nor do I feel the want to impress people I barely know.

"You don't like it?" I jolt my head back to look at Elijah, who now displays a frown covering his face. I shake my head.

"No, it's not that..." I manage to whisper out.

"What is it?" He asks, his brows furrowing in confusion.

"l.uhm..." I struggle to form words as my eyes flew away from Elijah’s suspecting ones.

What is wrong with you, Eleanor? Just say yes! I say to myself trying to sound so encouraging despite the tension weighing in on my head.

It's not like you're going to wear it forever. Yeah. I nod slightly agreeing to what I just thought.

And it's not like they'll gonna look at you from top to bottom or sneer at your little flaws. That was a thought I made up as an encouragement.

Then, I politely nodded to Elijah before he turns on his heel, leaving me in my room as my jaw hits the ground, just after I unboxed the white, sparkling dress. S~ᴇaʀᴄh the ꜰindNʘvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

It had many glitters and sparkles and a slit that exposes only the back part of my body, an equally huge part of my neck to my shoulders, and a little side view of my thighs with the slit. More than that, the design was intricately created and I can already tell just how jaw-dropping it would be if they hadn't cut its price tag before they gave it to me.

It's beautiful. In fact, it was too beautiful for someone like me to wear it, though Elijah simply gave it for me to wear.

Should I ask him to take it back? I shook my head, considering the fact that he might think I'm being too picky and bossy to order him around being that I am nothing but an outsider in this pack. Sighing, I resign to my bed tossing the dress beside me.

It took me more than thirty minutes to finish getting ready with the dress and make up and hair and all. In those long minutes, I can only hear and feel my heart pump rapidly against my chest. My mind bombarded with worries knowing they must have all found out about my backstory--a human their alpha is about to be taking as his mate and luna.

My hand trembles as I slowly comb down my long, wavy raven hair that reached below my waist. I was sitting in front of the vanity mirror, allowing my hari to air-dry quickly as I did take a warm bath after I had surrendered to Ellijah’s request.

I stared at my reflection in the mirror. Wondering and worrying for how this pack is going to see me as a mere weak human. I recalled Alexander's words back in that room and hoped what he had said wasn't a lie.

Will they really accept me even if they know about the title I was given by my father at my 13th birthday--the wolfless girl?

I place the comb lightly on the table before me, sighing.

"You can do this’ My wolf reassures me, making me smile and nod.

The confident tone in her voice somehow helped me relax and loosen up, evening out my breathing.

"You're absolutely right, Ares. I can do this because of you' As much as possible I liked giving my wolf lots of acknowledgement just to remind her she exist. Because I was never allowed to shift into my wolf ever again after I unexpectedly turned that night on my 13th birthday, Ares never got to be free to run into the forest. I was strictly placed under watch for 24 hours and there was no escaping my father's beta at that. He's one hard tough nut to crack.

“Okay, stop. Don't panic, Eleanor. Just breathe in and breathe out. We'll just be having breakfast, so it will certainly won't take too much time." She said.

I sighed out of frustration.

Finally I pick myself up from the chair and walked towards the door. Just then I heard knocking so I quickly opened it, thinking maybe Elijah came to check on me again like he did in the past thirty minutes.

However the person right on the other side wasn't really who I was expecting.

Alexander stared at me for long seconds as if time itself froze. Once again I felt as though my clothes were being undressed under the intensity he was giving me with those eyes. Unconsciously, I wrap my arms around myself and averts my eyes from his, suddenly feeling so awkward and shy. Why do I always want to hide from this mountain of a man towering over me?
