Chapter 70

Mason

Kora watched anxiously as Kylan gathered the members of the Shadowmoon pack that evening. She had been quiet since Eloise’s revelation, and I could sense her unease. I wanted to reassure her and offer her comfort, but my nerves threatened

to overpower me.

I’d agreed to go along with Eloise’s vision for us, but it was more to ensure the safety of our packmates who’d had to flee with us. I assumed Kora had the same thinking because she’d been plastering on a smile and trying to pretend all was normal

Shadowmoon had kneeled without argument beneath the moon, accepting our appointment as Alpha and Luna as though it was the most natural thing in the world. The celebration afterward was where the real test was coming in.

The clearing buzzed with anticipation as the pack members assembled, their voices mingling in a symphony of relief and determination. I stood at the center, surrounded by our loyalists and new packmates alike, feeling the weight of their trust and the magnitude of our responsibility. Several had congratulated us and moved on, thankfully, but a few were still hovering

Rylan joined me, and we found a moment to speak privately. His eyes held a mix of surprise and gratitude as I shared my decision.

“I think it’s best if you oversee the day-to-day affairs of the Shadowmoon pack,” I told him, my voice steady.

Rylan blinked, clearly taken aback. “You… you trust me with such responsibility?”

Of course, I did. He’d been leading them for weeks before we arrived. Rylan had dragged them out of the rut that Deborah and Lyle had left behind. By all rights, he was their true Alpha-no matter what title was handed off to me and my mate.

I nodded, a reassuring smile playing on my l*ps. “Absolutely. You know your pack members better than anyone. I believe in your ability to lead and protect them during this transitional period, and I will need a Beta.”

Rylan straightened his posture, determination radiating from him. Thank you, Mason. I won’t let you down. I’ll do everything in my power to lead my pack with honor and protect them.”

“I believe in you,” I replied, my voice confident. “But remember, I will be there to support you. I want to be a present and supportive Alpha for the Shadowmoon pack. Their trust is of utmost importance to me.”

Rylan’s expression softened, gratitude évident in his eyes. “I appreciate that, Mason. We’re fortunate to have you leading us after what happened with Lyle and Deborah.”

I shuddered, and Kora took that moment to speak up on my behalf, “Their actions won’t define us. Together, we will face the challenges ahead and prove that our packs are stronger united.”

Rylan’s eyes darted between us, determination flickering in his eyes. “Together, we will forge a path of unity and strength. Our packs will stand as one against our common enemy”

Our alliance solidified at that moment, a shared purpose guiding us. The weight of leadership pressed upon my shoulders, but knowing that Rylan would be by my side gave me strength. We would support each other-lift one another up and ensure that pick Shadowmoon continued to thrive.

“Our packs have come together in the face of adversity,” I declared, my voice filled with conviction. “I will be a guiding presence in your lives, there for you all. Together, we will overcome the challenges that await us and ensure the safety and prosperity of our packs.”

A smile tugged at the corners of Rylan’s l*ps, his determination shining through. “I am honored to stand beside you, Mason. Let us lead our packs into a future of unity and strength”

As we joined the rest of the pack in celebration, the weight of our newfound responsibilities settled upon us. The path ahead would be arduous, but with our shared determination and unwavering support for one another, we would navigate the challenges and protect our packs.

Deep down, though, a lingering sense of unease remained. The darkness Eloise had foreseen still loomed, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the threat than we had yet understood. Our journey had only begun, and I couldn’t help but wonder what other trials awaited us on the path to fulfilling the prophecy. Kora’s eyes darted around the clearing, scanning the faces of the pack members. She leaned in closer to me; her voice barely above a whisper. “Mason, do you think they truly believe in us? Can we live up to their expectations?”

I clasped her hand in mine, offering a reassuring squeeze. I understand your doubts, Kora, but we have to trust in our pack. They have shown their faith in us by accepting our leadership. We must believe in ourselves and prove we are worthy of their trust.”

Kora nodded her expression a mix of determination and worry. “I know, but what if we make mistakes? What if we’re not strong enough to face this darkness Eloise spoke off”

“We can’t let fear consume us,” I replied, my voice firm. “We will face each challenge, and learn from our mistakes. And remember, we have Rylan by our side. He’s proven himself to be a capable leader.

My mate nodded slowly, taking a steadying breath. We were still being watched intently by our new subjects, and I could tell she was grappling with what to say to them. I was too, but I’d also grown up knowing I would be the Alpha of my pack; making swift decisions and sticking by them came naturally to me

Kora stepped forward, her voice projecting with confidence. “Thank you all for your trust and support. We have a long road ahead of us, but together, we will face whatever comes our way.”

The pack murmured in agreement, their eyes filled with hope and determination. I took a step forward, my voice joining

Koras.

“Our first priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of our pack. We will strengthen our bonds and rebuild what was broken by Deborah and Lyles’s tyranny.”

And my mothers, I thought grimly as the worn faces of our old pack stared back at me, still battered and bruised. So much was happening in such a short time, and we had no choice but to adapt. I hoped for Kora’s sake we got a moment to absorb everything before more curveballs were thrown at us.

A chorus of cheers erupted, the pack members expressing their faith and determination: It was a moment of unity and shared purpose, filling me with renewed confidence. We may have been thrown into this role unexpectedly, but together, we would navigate the challenges ahead and protect our pack.

As the cheers died down, Kora’s eyes met mine, a mixture of determination and vulnerability shining through. I took her hand in mine and squeezed it. Slowly, we all settled together, and food began to pass around the circle that we’d formed near the bonfire. Shawn even limped over to sit with us, grinning at a green-eyed woman across the flickering firelight.

The challenges ahead were daunting, and the darkness loomed on the h orizon, but we were ready to confront them head-

on.

Our pack was counting on us, and we would not disappoint them. At least, I hope we wouldn’t.
