Chapter 79

**Kora

The tension between Mason and me had grown palpable, like a thick fog settling between us. It seemed as though the bond we once shared was sl*pping away, leaving only fractured fragments of what we used to be. I couldn’t understand why he had become so standoffish, so distant. The anguish of our crumbling connection gnawed at my soul, tearing at the seams of my

heart.

Avoidance had become my coping mechanism; a feeble attempt to shield myself from the pain of Mason’s indifference. I busied myself with the affairs of the pack, taking solace in the familiar routines and responsibilities. The howls of the hunters echoing through the trees, and the scent of the earth after a fresh rainfall-these were the things that kept me grounded amidst the chaos that consumed our lives.

But deep down, the ache of longing never ceased. Every stolen glance, and every word left unsaid, weighed heavily on my heart. The once vibrant flame of our love now flickered with uncertainty, threatening to extinguish completely. It felt as though we were drifting apart, caught in the currents of fate that threatened to tear us asunder.

Shawn had noticed the strain in my relationship with Mason. He had tried to offer support and guidance, but even his words fell short in the face of my confusion. And now, with the summit looming ahead, tensions were reaching their breaking point. The weight of the world seemed to rest upon my shoulders, threatening to crush me beneath its unforgiving weight.

As the sun began its descent, casting a warm golden hue over the parklands, I found myself seeking solace in the company of Shawn. We sat by the riverbank, our feet dangling in the cool water, as we tried to make sense of the chaos that had consumed our lives. The gentle babbling of the river soothed my frayed nerves, its rhythmic flow a comforting lullaby amidst the storm that raged within me.

“Kora, you can’t keep avoiding Mason forever, Shawn said softly, his voice filled with concern. “You two need to talk and find a way to bridge the divide.”

I sighed, ripples forming on the surface of the water. Tve tried, Shawn. I’ve tried reaching out to him, but he always pushes me away. It’s like he doesn’t want to be near me anymore.”

Shawn’s gaze softened, his eyes filled with empathy. “Mason’s been going through a lot since we rescued Elijah. He’s been distant with everyone, not just you. Maybe it’s time we give him some space, but also let him know that we’re here for him.

I nodded, understanding the wisdom in Shawn’s words. Mason had been deeply affected by the revelations about our old pack, and the horrors we had left behind. The weight of his past burdened his present, and I must remember that his behavior wasn’t solely directed at me. The ghosts of his past haunted him, and I needed to find a way to help him confront and conquer them.

Just as we were lost in our thoughts, a familiar voice called out from behind us. “Kora, Shawn, mind if I join you?”

It was Elijah-the wolf we had recently rescued. His presence brought a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness that shrouded us. I motioned for him to join us by the river, and he settled himself beside me, his eyes filled with gratitude.

“I wanted to thank you both again, Elijah began, his voice tinged with emotion. “You gave me a chance at a new life.”

Shawn smiled warmly at Elijah. “You don’t have to thank us, Elijah. We did what any pack would do. We look out for our

own.

Elijah’s eyes shifted, his gaze flickering with a hint of fear. That’s the thing, Shawn. Our old pack… it’s not what we thought it was. There’s something bigger at play, something that threatens all of us.”

Curiosity and concern danced in my eyes as I turned to face Elijah. “What do you mean something bigger?”

Elijah took a deep breath, his voice steady but filled with urgency. “An nalise wants to manipulate the chaos that follows the summit to get the other Alphas on her side. She doesn’t care if we’re all unified as one people, but she wants them to back her coup for when Mason comes for his place again.

My heart ski pped a beat at Elijah’s revelation. The gravity of the situation settled upon us like a heavy cloak, suffocating and

oppressive. The thought of an Alpha with such ruthless ambitions sent chills down my spine. It was clear that our previous encounters with An nalise were mere glimpses into the depths of her treacherous nature.

Shawn clenched his fists, his voice laced with anger. “That b*tch!”

Elijah nodded, his eyes burtting with determination. “I agree. We need to gather allies, strengthen our defenses, and prepare for what lies ahead.”

“We’ll have to do it at the start of the summit before she gets her claws into anyone,” I realize, grimacing. It was unlikely that all the Alphas would side with us, but if we could get enough of them on our side, it would stop An nalise’s bid for power, at

least.

A flicker of hope ignited within me. Despite the fractures in our pack, and the growing distance between Mason and me, we still had a chance to fight against this impending darkness. Together, we could overcome the trials that awaited us.

Elijah’s gaze met mine, unwavering and resolute. “We must convince them of the imminent threat and rally their support.”

“They’ll already get that from Eloise,” Shawn pointed out. “She’s feigning to tell everyone about her visions of Mason as the Lycan King, and her concerns about the great evil that we’ll have to stand against.” He was right, but the key was making sure they heard us before An nalise.

The weight of the task ahead settled upon us, the responsibility heavy upon our shoulders. Mason’s absence from this crucial conversation only intensified the sense of urgency. We couldn’t afford to let our personal conflicts overshadow the impending danger.

“Shawn, we need to find Mason,” I said, my voice laced with determination. “He needs to be a part of this. Despite our differences, he’s still our Alpha. His presence and support are crucial.” Sᴇaʀch Thᴇ Findɴovel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Even though I doubted he would listen to anything involving his mother. His steadfast refusal to address her betrayal or unpack all of the damage it had caused was definitely going to be an obstacle for us.

Shawn nodded, his jaw set with unwavering resolve. “I’ll search for him. I’ll make him understand the stakes, and make him see that we can’t face this threat alone.”

As the sun dipped below the h orizon, casting long shadows over the land, we left the riverbank with a renewed purpose. The summit awaited, and our path was clear-we had to confront the Lycan King’s agenda, expose An nalise’s true intentions, and, ensure the survival of our packs.

But amidst the tumultuous journey ahead, the question lingered- would our fractured bond with Mason heal in time for us to face this threat together, or would it crumble under the weight of the shadows that loomed over us? Only time would tell.
