I took in the chaos around me, looking for what or who was attacking us. A shriek sounded overhead, and I looked up to see my mate being attacked by two of our warriors. “What’s going on, Jadzia?” I asked my dragon, but she didn’t respond, she just paced within my mind. My grip tightened on my daggers as two large wolves stalked toward me, but before they could attack a bolt of lightning hit them, killing them instantly. I looked around for the person that saved me and spotted Mona a few hundred yards away, but before I could thank her, she was covered up with attackers.

I began attacking the wyverns chasing after our Crowned Prince with my lightning, but my magic glanced off of them. Just as I triggered my shift, I saw his mate swoop in, quickly killing them with two bites. I was hit as soon as I flew into the sky by two small wyverns, but I was faster in my counter attack, killing them quickly. I fought through so many dragons and wyverns, I couldn’t tell who was on our side and who wasn’t. Lightning raced through the sky as the battle raged.

For every clan member lost, I felt a pain cut through me like a hot knife, but each pain made me fight harder for my clan. I dodged the bolts of lightning that raced toward me, and watched in horror as a bolt struck our Queen. I curled up in pain, quickly falling toward the ground, but there was nothing I could do except watch as my clanmates fell with me unable to stay in the sky with the amount of pain coursing through us. I heard our Crowned Prince’s dragon scream out in pain as he flew down to catch his mate’s lifeless body.

My mate’s dragon smiled as he watched his brother. I felt the electricity race over my scales as my mate charged a lightning attack. I righted myself in the air, and darted as quickly as I could to cover the Crowned Prince. It was as if I was moving in slow motion, watching the lightning bolt move through the air, and just before it could hit the Crowned Prince, I flew in front of it. Pain coursed through my body from my head to the tips of my wings to the tip of my tail, and then I felt nothing, waking up in a field of mist; the scent of mint surrounding me.

“Ingrid?”

She floated out of the mist, touching her forehead to mine when she reached me. “Thank you.”

“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you,” I said, but she shook her head.

“It was my fate. There was nothing that could be done to stop it. The heavens had already decided.”

“Did anyone make it?’ I asked quietly, worrying over the fate of my son.

Ingrid nodded, “Some did, but they won’t have it easy.”

“Please tell me,” I sobbed, “What I did, it mattered, didn’t it?”
