Chapter 10

Eleanor Amato - POV

Argh! Why should I embarrass myself on my first day here,

“Don't worry, Marquez didn't say anything,” Erica said, but I shook my head and walked over to my bed. I took out the clothes inside to see that there was a set of pajamas, two sundresses, and some lingerie. And all of these were brand new because the tags were still on. How did he know my size?

I didn't dwell on it too much. And quickly put on the clothes and walked downstairs. I passed the living room and walked down the hallway when I arrived at the kitchen. Marquez was already seated on the table with a cup of coffee and two plates of food in front of him.

“Good morning. Did you like what was there?” Marquez asked me, and I nodded my head before I walked over to the table and took a seat opposite him.

“How did you know my size?”

“I found a woman in the pack house who roughly looked like your size, and I took her to the boutique in the pack town to help me buy those clothes,” he explained, and my mouth formed an ‘o’. “Don't worry, I am not a creep,” he added with a smirk on his face, but I shook my head.

“No, I never thought that. It just felt weird to have the dresses that were exactly in my size.” I explained, and he nodded his eyes before we became silent again. I took the cup of coffee that was in front of me and started sipping it. Well, I guess, I really needed that after the hectic day I had yesterday.

“So, did you guys speak last night?” Marquez asked me, and I noticed that there was a tone of uncertainty in his voice.

“He gave me a contract and said that we will be together for six months before we go our separate ways,” I said it so causally which made Marquez’s eyes widen. I know, even I was surprised with how relaxed I am about this situation. But I guess all the crying I did last night helped me.

I know there is no point in trying to change Xavier’s mind. I have already made up my mind.

“And you are okay with it?” he asked me shocked, when I finally looked up at him. He looked so concerned, but a feeling of doubt engulfed me. Marquez is the Gamma of this pack, and I bet Xavier and he must have been quite close with each other for a very long time. So it kind of shocked me when I saw he was concerned about me.

“I don't think I have a say in that. He had already made up his mind, and I don't think I can change that.” I answered in a monotone. I tried very hard to keep my feelings and emotions at bay. I don't want anyone to know how much this is hurting me.

“I can see you are not okay with it, Eleanor. I mean, I would never be if I was in a situation that you are in.” Marquez said. “Sam and I didn't like the decision he took, but we tried very hard to convince him not to go through with it,” Marquez explained while I stared into his eyes. I tried very hard to find something in here. To see if he was playing tricks on me, to show him how vulnerable I am, and then laugh about it with Xavier, but all I saw was honesty in them, and I knew that he was telling the truth.

Well, looks like not everyone in this pack is as ruthless and wicked as the rumors predicted.

“I don't know what I did to deserve this,” I mumbled at last and looked down at the plate of food in front of me. There were three sausages, an omelet, two toasts, and bacon. The perfect comfort that would always make me happy, but looking at it now only made me want to throw it away.

“There is nothing wrong with you, Eleanor. It is his past that made him this way.”

“What do you mean?” I asked him when I finally looked up again. A sad look crossed his face before he let out a frustrated sigh and leaned back on his chair.

“Well, he had been in a relationship in the past. And he was very much in love with that woman.” Marquez began before he started running his hands through his hair. “Well, this is not my story to tell, but all I can say is that their relationship ended badly, and now he has sworn off from any sort of relationship.”

“But a mate bond is different. A mate is paired by the moon goddess. And I don't think the bond that mates share can be comparable to any sort of relationship that is out there.” I asserted. I mean, if he is trying to reject me just because some relationship didn't work for him, then I don't think I can let him go like that.

I mean, he should know that a mate bond is different. We are destined to be together.

“The woman he loved with all his heart was his mate, Eleanor. His first chance mate.” Marquez said sadly, and this made my heart nearly stop beating.

I thought she would fight, yell at me, or even beg, but instead, she just took the papers and signed them before she handed them over to me. And this only confirmed my suspicions. Those tears that flowed down her cheeks were just her act. Eleanor is just like her, and this only made me even more pissed off.

As soon as she left my office, I banged my hand on the table. I didn't know why I was angry and annoyed. I mean, I did not want to mate with her, but why did I feel like those tears were not an act? “You are throwing away the one thing that would make us happy.” Kyle, my wolf, said in anger.

“She is just like the rest of them. You will thank me later for saving your ass from another heartbreak.” I told him in a dismissal tone before I put my block back up.
