Bitten
Chapter 25

Monsters.

Monsters are real. That much is true.

But not all monsters are the same.

The real monsters are the ones that go after the truly innocent ones.

Staring into those inhuman eyes I feel lost in my distress.

Chris stands before me holding the most precious thing in my life.

My day started so great when suddenly it took a turn for the deadly.

My eyes suddenly shoot up and my body is on alert. I listen hard to Hannah’s relaxed breathing is coming from my room when Mason’s whisper makes me turn to look at him.

“Abigail come back.”

I’m right here.

His arm tightens around me as his face presses closer to my back and he takes a deep breath.

“Don’t leave,” he whimpers and if I still had a heart it would tighten with his words.

You don’t leave me.

“Abigail?” His sleepy voice makes me look back at him, “you’re here.”

The relief on his face makes me smile.

“Of course,” he smiles back when his eyes widen a bit.

“Sorry, but my arms asleep and I have to go to the bathroom.”

I get off the couch and he wiggles his fingers around a bit trying to regaining some feeling in his arm. Once he finishes he runs to the bathroom.

I head into the kitchen and start up the coffee maker.

My senses scan the nearby area for any unknown noises, nothing. My body relaxes and I head into my bedroom where Hannah’s eyes flutter open.

“Hey, aren’t we an early bird.” I cooed at her and she smiles at me and gestures for me to carry her. I grab her and walk to the living room where Mason is.

“I’m going to take a shower if you don’t mind.”

I shake my head and he grabs his clothes and heads back into the shower.

“Are you a hungry caterpillar?” I lift Hannah and she laughs. “How about some scrambled eggs?”

I turn on the television and Hannah is immediately hooked.

I turn on the stove and start cracking some eggs. The eggs are ready when the bathroom door opens up revealing a shirtless Mason.

Hannah greets her father with a fit of laughter as he nuzzles her hair.

“What are you cooking?” He asks as he moves away from Hannah and makes his way towards me.

“Eggs. I made plenty if you want some.” I turn around and scrape the last of the egg into a big plate.

“Sure.” He grins at me and gets Hannah from the couch.

She fusses a bit but doesn’t fight her father once she is seated. I place their plates in front of them and make to mugs of coffee for Mason and me.

I sit next to Hannah and squirt some ketchup on her eggs and she opens up as I feed her. Mason eats quietly sipping at his coffee. I notice that every time that I bring my mug to my lips his eyes study my movements as if waiting for something.

“What?” My eyes dart to him.

“Nothing I thought you only drank you know.”

My eyes narrow and I look at him, “Wes told me that I need to fit in so I am working on my eating and drinking. This does nothing to calm my thirst but at least I look normal.”

He nods and continues eating. I give Hannah another spoonful of the egg as I look over at them and a pleasurable feeling fills me.

This is a reminder of what I wanted when I was a human. I am about to give Hannah another spoonful when my phone rings.

My sensitive hearing finds it in my bedroom. My phone states that Wes is calling me.

“Hello?”

We need to talk.

“Spill it.”

We need to talk face to face. His voice sounds exhausted.

“About?”

Vincent.

“Where?”

At the park the one I took you to. He ends the call.

“I’ll be there.” I put the phone in my pocket, “I have to go.” I tell Mason as I walk into the living room.

“You do?”

“Yes, I’ll be back as soon as possible.” I walk over to them and Mason stands up and I feel a pull. I lower down and kiss Hannah on the head.

“Please be careful.” He says and I nod.

“Look after the place, use your trusty bat.” I smile at him but he shows no humor in his face, “call me if anything you know.”

He nods and I run out the door rushing to Wes’ side the faster this is over with the sooner I can get back to them.

I make it to the park and it is too early for people to be here. I spot Wes without any trouble.

“What is it?” Without hesitating, he spills it.

“Vincent is,” he clears his throat, “was looking into your kind. Your kind can bring down the vampire empire single handily and I think that Chris wants you on his team so that you can wipe out his competition.”

“What are you talking about?”

“He wants you to kill off the oldest vampire!” He hisses at me.

“Why does he want me to do that?”

“So he can step up and take over our world and with you by his side no one is going to mess with him.”

“But he tried killing me!” I snap at him.

“That’s another thing if he did manage to kill you do you think that anyone one wants to go up against the vampire that killed the vampire slayer.”

Crap!

“So?”

“We need to kill him and his coven.”

I try to think of something else killing them sounds too dangerous and what if I lose more people in the process.

My pocket starts vibrating and I look at the caller ID.

Mason.

I answer his call but don’t have a chance to speak.

An eye for an eye.

The line goes dead and I look at Wes who is knows what’s going on already.

“Track him down, Abigail.”

My vampire senses heighten and I don’t know what is happening but my body starts moving to its own accord.

My body lunges forward and I am speeding down through the city.

“What’s happening?” I say hoping that Wes can hear me. Sᴇaʀch Thᴇ Find_Nøvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“You needed a reason for your tracking power to kick in and you found it.” My fangs protrude as I run.

“He wants us back at the clearing.”

I notice the path I am taking and the anger within me fuels me to move faster. This time it is his head being ripped off his shoulder.

I stop and I see that he is in the same clearing. This time there are at least eight other vampires with him. Chris is in the middle holding Hannah in his arms and Mason is on the floor gagged and blindfolded. Hannah cries in his arms and when her eyes land on me she seeks my comfort and her arms stretch out for me to hold her.

I take a step towards her and the cracking of bone echoes in my ears as the vampire next to Mason kicks him in the ribs, “Come any closer and he gets a beating and she,” his eyes go down to Hannah as his fingers caress her cheek and she stretches away from him, “gets the bite.”

A true monster would take a child’s innocence.
