Bonds of the Fallen
Chapter 30

The morning dew glistened on the grass as the Harii assumed positions on the elevated terrain, with an expansive field unfurling below them. Side by side, Ace and Bat stood firm, their gazes fixed intently on the tree line from where the followers of the New God were anticipated to emerge. The sounds of rustling foliage and muffled voices signaled the enemy’s preparations for the impending conflict.

Meanwhile, Velika and the remaining Vampir clan secured their posts atop the city walls. From their vantage point, they observed the battle dynamics unfolding in the distant field. They stood resolute, weapons poised and eyes relentlessly scanning the horizon. The city’s citizens had sought shelter within the confines of their homes, their hearts heavy with anticipation for news of the battle’s outcome. Velika and her fellow Vampir felt the weight of responsibility on their shoulders and resolved to safeguard their city against all threats.

As dawn broke, the followers of the New God spilled forth from the confines of the forest, their numbers seemingly endless. A wave of trepidation swept over Bat, but she remained steadfast. Her eyes tracked the enemy as they meticulously arranged themselves into formidable ranks, their weapons glinting menacingly under the nascent light.

Bat sensed the kinetic energy of the battle intensifying, the golden threads she had perceived earlier now pulsating with a heightened sense of anticipation. She positioned herself just behind the front line, observing as the followers surged forward, a potent mixture of fear and zealous conviction etched into their faces.

Above the tumult, Val’s authoritative voice reverberated, “Hold your ground! We will not strike first,” he instructed the Harii, his eyes locking with Bat’s. “Bat, stay behind the line.”

Ace stood beside Val, his twin swords drawn and a mischievous smirk playing on his lips.

“Think you’ve still got it in you to keep up?” Val inquired, his grin mirroring Ace’s.

Ace fluidly brandished his swords in response, their blades singing through the air. “The real question is, can you keep up with me, old man?” he winked.

The followers encircled them, weapons raised in threatening arcs, primed to descend in deadly strokes. Bat braced herself, every fiber of her concentrated and ready to react at the pivotal moment. The tension in the air reverberated with the sounds of clashing weapons and the fierce cries of warriors.

Val’s arm shot up, his voice slicing through the mayhem. “Hold!” He ordered, his tone brooking no disagreement. “We will not be the ones to spill first blood.”

The sounds of steel meeting steel resonated through the air as the two opposing forces met in a clash of fury on the front line. The Harii, true to their commander’s orders, staunchly resisted the impulse to attack, holding their ground. This restraint persisted until one of the followers lashed out, his blade carving a gash in the arm of a Harii soldier who recoiled from the assault. This act served as the catalyst for the Harii, who then lunged into action, dispatching those who had been the first to breach their defenses with lethal efficiency.

At that moment, the world decelerated, and Bat became acutely aware of the golden threads that danced and intertwined through the impending battle. She propelled herself forward with a surge of energy, unsheathing her sword and preparing to defend her life.

Ace advanced, assuming the mantle of leadership. Bat was on his heels, her senses heightened to a razor-sharp edge. She could almost feel the golden threads thrumming around her as she navigated the battlefield, binding her to Ace and the other Vampir embroiled in the conflict. Ace moved with the fluidity and grace of smoke, his swords an extension of his will as he felled opponent after opponent. Amidst the brutality and carnage, his prowess was a thing of mesmerizing beauty.

Warriors astride winged steeds descended from the heavens, claiming the souls of those whose threads had been severed in the battle. “The Valkyrie!” came a shout from somewhere on the battlefield, its tone a mixture of awe and fear as more adversaries emerged from the tree line. Val fought with fierce determination alongside Ace and Einar, forming an impenetrable shield around Bat, protecting her from the brunt of the enemy’s assault.

From afar, smoke plumes rose from the city, marring the skyline. Bat focused on the golden threads that extended towards the city, her heart pounding. A vivid image unfolded before her mind’s eye, depicting followers setting fire to homes, the flames consuming everything in their path.

“Val, the city is in flames—we must act!” Bat called out over the din of clashing swords and war cries.

Val’s eyes grew wide as he processed her words. “I’ll dispatch a team to aid them,” he declared, motioning to a cluster of Vampir who stood ready. “Ace, you’re with them.”

Ace gave a firm nod and strode purposefully towards the assembled group. “Consider it done,” he asserted before leading them toward the city. As Bat’s focus shifted back to the threads of fate, her vision morphed to show the Vampir valiantly battling the flames and ushering the city’s residents to safety.

The vision dissipated, and Bat’s attention snapped to the wave of followers that surged towards them. The conflict escalated, and each side suffered losses. The adrenaline rush surged through Bat’s veins, fueling her as she fought fiercely. The sounds of battle—the metallic clash of swords, the anguished cries of the wounded and fallen, and the beating wings of the Valkyries as they swooped down from the heavens—filled her ears.

Amidst the chaos, Bat’s senses sharpened to an extraordinary degree. She could almost see the ethereal threads of destiny that wove through the air, linking the lives of all those present. She felt the anguish of the wounded and the resolve of those fighting to shield their loved ones from harm.

Bat’s gaze fell upon a child who was far too young to wield a sword and then another. A group of terrified children were running straight towards her. “Children!” she gasped in horror.

As the children drew near, Bat saw the confusion and fear etched into their youthful faces, their innocence marred by the turmoil surrounding them. Determined to shield them from harm, she raised her shield before them. Among the group was a young girl with a wild mane of blonde hair who attached herself to Bat’s leg, her tiny body wracked with sobs. Bat crouched down and gently used her free hand to tenderly brush the girl’s hair from her face, offering her a silent promise of protection.

“It’s alright,” Bat cooed softly to the terrified child, “I’ve got you. You’re safe with me.” The other children gathered around her, seeking solace and protection in her presence. Standing tall, Bat placed herself between the children and the chaotic battlefield, wielding her War hammer and shield with determination. She guided the children to the periphery of the battle, her sole focus on safeguarding them.

As the fight persisted, Bat’s senses homed in on a group of followers who approached, their swords brandished high. With a fierce resolve, she lunged towards them, her war hammer arching through the air with brute force. sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ FɪndNovᴇl.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Out of the corner of his eye, Ace spotted Bat and followed her gaze. His face contorted with horror as he took in the sight of the children huddled behind her, just as a group of followers bore down upon them. His heart stopped.

A piercing scream echoed as the cold steel of a dagger sliced through Bat’s side, embedding itself between her ribs. She looked down to see her shirt rapidly staining with her blood.

Panic-stricken, Ace charged towards her, his ears filled with the sounds of agonizing screams. At first, Bat thought she was the one who had screamed, but a glance across the battlefield revealed Val, held back by Einar, his screams merging with the chaos around them.

“Help him!” Bat implored Ace, gasping for breath as she spared a moment to ensure the children’s safety. A barricade of Harii had formed around them, protecting the young ones.

As Bat and Ace navigated through the sea of followers, fighting off the enemies that sprang from the trees, they finally reached Val and Einar. Val was in the throes of anguish, his body contorting in pain as he howled, his eyes blazing with an unbridled fury. Einar was doing his best to restrain him, but it was evident Val was in the grip of something far beyond physical pain.

Bat rushed to Val’s side, her trained eyes scanning his body for any visible injuries.

“What’s happening to him?” Bat asked. Val’s body had no evident injuries.

“When you were wounded, his first impulse was to rush to your aid,” Einar explained, his voice weighed with gravity. “But Odin forbade him from intervening in your death.”

Val’s frame was wracked with spasms, his chest rising and falling in ragged breaths, a sheen of sweat glistening on his pallid skin. Bat’s heightened senses could almost taste his agony in the air. Gently, she reached out, her hand enclosing Val’s. His fingers closed around hers with a vice-like grip, his scream morphing into a series of guttural moans as his body convulsed uncontrollably.

“He defied an explicit command from Odin,” Ace stated, his voice grave.

A gasp escaped Bat’s lips as her eyes saw the sinister black veins that had begun to inch up Val’s arm, spreading their darkness like an evil web. His screams intensified, reverberating in her ears.

“Odin is unraveling his very being. Such is the cost of rebellion,” Einar elucidated, his grip on Val’s convulsing form tightening as droplets of black began to trail down Val’s face.

“We must get him back to the compound,” Bat implored Einar and Ace, her voice taut with urgency.

The golden filament that tethered her to Val quivered frenetically, its strands beginning to unravel. Fragments of the golden thread disintegrated, floating up into the smoky air, carried aloft by the heat from the inferno consuming the city. Val’s life force was ebbing away, and with it, a piece of Bat’s soul.
