Chapter 29 

When Damien looked at Anastasia again, she stared with an unreadable expression. She worried her bottom lip with her teeth before pursing her lips together. Alan let go of his leg and grabbed onto his mother’s outstretched hand. 

When he followed them out, he noticed Anastasia buckling Alan into his car seat. He turned around and looked at them. “Can you give us a minute?” he asked. 

“Sure. Goodnight, Ana,” Wynne called out. Anastasia gave a muilled response. Damien watched as she turned to shut the door and then went to the driver’s side. 

“Ana” 

She looked up at him, startled by his voice. “Yes?” 

Damien approached her so that he could speak to her quietly. “What is his name?” he asked and stopped about a foot from her. 

Ana’s brow furrowed in confusion. 

“His full name?” he clarified. 

“Oh. Alan Carl Reid,” she said, looking anywhere but at him. 

Damien swallowed hard. He had been right, she hadn’t given him the Wright surname. But she had given Alan his father’s 

name. 

“Carl?” 

“I thought it was fair that he be named after both his grandfathers.” 

“But not Wright.” It wasn’t a question. 

Ana looked at him with irritation. “Really Damien?” her voice notified him it was best to just move on from the topic. 

“When’s his birthday?” He got all the information he had jotted down in his head. To know what the first moments of his son were like. Moreover, he had been a huge baby, and so was his son. 

Ana was a small girl and the baby was almost half of her weight added on. His concern made her smirk and Damien tried to picture a pregnant Anastasia. 

The image in his head freaked him out a little but what he saw were his hands on her firm round belly, his ears pressed. against her skin. He shook his head trying to make the image go away. 

“I’m sorry Damien, but I need to get Alan to bed.” 

“Oh! I’m sorry. I just thought. I just don’t know anything,” he confessed. 

“It’s okay. You can ask me anything you want. I have pictures if you want to see them.” She stopped. “Only if you want to see them,” she added quickly. 

Damien hesitated. He really did want to see it. As a father, he was interested in finding out about his son. Anastasia shifted on her feet and cleared her throat. 

“Don’t worry about it, Damien. You don’t have to. I thought I would offer just in case, but its not a big deal.” 

Damien nodded 

“Have a good night,” she said as she climbed into her car and drove away. 

Chapter 29 

Meeting Alan had not been what he had expected. He didn’t know what he had thought would happen, but that wasn’t it. He wasn’t a little ball of terror he saw all over the city. He seemed laid back and reserved. Damien had never realized kids had their own personalities before that moment. 

When he slipped into bed that night, he thought about how he could come to a conclusion without spending time with Alan. If he spent his time around Alan and felt nothing, then he had his answer. A kid should never be left with a father who doesn’t want him. But if Damien felt something. how much would Ana allow Damien into their lives? How much did he want to be involved? 

Damien needed to speak to Ana. Not in the way he did that night, with so many people watching their every move. But just the two of them. He needed to know what Ana expected and what she wanted. He needed to know where he would fit in this complex puzzle. 

In Anastasia’s opinion, Damien was a frustrating man. As she drove home, she felt worried. She hadn’t expected him to become a super–father overnight. After everything that had transpired, he knew he wouldn’t just become an awesome guy who would be thrilled to have a son of his own. But was it so diflicult to communicate with their child for a couple of hours? 

She reminded herself, that this was the first time they had met. Ana was trying to be patient and understanding, but watching him was just downright awful. 

Damien’s body exuded his confusion and hesitance. 

Ana wasn’t sure if she wanted to encourage communication or not. For now, she was going to remain neutral. 

Anastasia woke with a start, nearly falling out of bed. She was sweating and breathing heavily. She kept seeing random people on the street trying to take Alan away from her. When they got to the park that weekend. Wynne and James had also come. James approached Ana and handed her a large latte. 

“Thank you,” Ana sighed. 

“No problem.” James grinned. “Rough morning?” 

Ana nodded. “You could say that. I was up late working last night and then didn’t sleep well. Alan was throwing a tantrum. about a police truck that he absolutely couldn’t leave the house without, but he doesn’t have a police truck. Dad finished all the tea and coffee at home so you pretty much made my day better.” 

“That’s my job,” Hames teased as he pointed to his chest. “Disaster Management is my forte, remember?” 

Ana snorted and took a long sip of the scorching latte. “Funny.” 

They watched Wynne run around after Alan. It was hysterical. Alan was running circles around her. 

“I finally know why you are so thin,” Wynne gasped for air when she returned to them. “I have been running after the kid for half an hour and I am exhausted. I think my soul just left my body.” 

Wynne flopped down next to Ana on the bench and put her hand on James‘ knee. “Your turn!” she grinned at him. 

James handed his coffee to his wife, stood up, and ran full speed towards Alan, who was squealing in delight from the other side of the small playground. 

“I never realized children could be this fun,” Wynne murmured. “Did you have a nice talk with Damien that afternoon?” she asked curiously.

Ana nodded and continued watching James and Alan. James was now pretending to be a dinosaur under the play structure’s

bridge and Alan had to run across as fast as he could without waking the dinosaur up. His shrieks alerted everyone within a five–mile radius when he was unsuccessful. 

Wynne and Ana chatted enthusiastically until Wynne looked over Ana’s shoulder. Her lips twitched into a small smile and Ana turned to see what was so amusing. It was not what she expected to see. 

Damien stood at the edge of the park, leaning against a tree and sipping coffee. His eyes were trained on James and Alan.
