Chapter 58 

Damien kissed her head and looked over at her parents, who were watching them with what he assumed was amusement and curiosity. Damien nodded at them and they returned the gesture readily. 

Later on, once they were done eating, Alan Sr initiated a conversation about Damien’s work and they talked about other things they were mutually interested in. Of course, the others chimes in. 

“So, Anastasia, what is going on with your work?” Carl asked about halfway through dinner. 

“Since getting into the Wright Group project, I have had to take on more responsibilities. My hours have increased but I am still able to juggle everything effortlessly,” Ana answered. “It’s also a good thing that apart from daycare, everyone seems so happy to humor Alan” She chuckled. 

“We wouldn’t have it any other way. We are almost retired and at an age when we want to spoil our grandchildren.” 

Ana smiled. “Then I am sorry to break the news to you… Alan is three and already potty trained. I am thinking of putting him in preschool. I think he would do well in a classroom.” 

Damien gaped at Ana for a few minutes. They had not discussed this before. 

“Sorry, I didn’t tell you about it. I am sure we would have to do it anyway.” She rubbed his arm. Damien was about to retort but she saw her lips. twitching and realized that she was teasing him again. 

“That’s a great idea!” Dianna said, clapping her hands in excitement. “Alan is such a smart baby. Being in school would be perfect.” 

“Would you like to go to school, Alan?” Damien asked. 

Alan opened his mouth to say something but closed it when a piece of what he was eating fell out. He looked down at his lap and then back at Damien before nodding. Everyone laughed and Damien handed him a napkin. 

“Look these over,” Damien said, dropping a stack of paper and pamphlets in front of her. It was Friday night and Damien had picked her up from work and brought her to his apartment. She still had work to finish, so Damien took over and tucked Alan into bed. 

They still hadn’t spoken. Damien was avoiding the conversation every time Ana tried to broach it. Mysteriously, he always had some unfinished work that needed his attention immediately. One way or another, it was time for Ana to talk to him. And she was going to do it that very night. 

“What is this?” she asked, staring at the pile of papers in front of her. 

“I got a form and pamphlet for every preschool in the city.” 

“In the city…” she repeated. 

“Yes. There shouldn’t be an issue with dropping him off and picking him up despite our busy schedules. We could just drive together and drop Alan off in the morning. We can also pick him up at the end of the day.” 

Ana pursed her lips. “I guess that makes sense.” She started flipping through the papers. “My god, there are so many of them. How long did you work. on this? How the hell are we supposed to pick one?” 

Damien shrugged and sat down next to her. “I have no idea. I even compiled all the testimony from parents of students, but I still don’t know what Alan will enjoy the most.” 

Ana skimmed through the pamphlets before chalking out a plan. “We should pick the ten that sound best on paper and then put them in order of rank and desirability. We can visit the top three and then pick the one we think suits Alan the best.” 

Damien sighed. “And what if we don’t like any of them?” 

Ana shrugged. “We will move down until we find one we like.” 

“I still want to give Alan the best education,” Damien admitted. 

“Well, do you have any input in this process, then?” she questioned. 

“Ana, fuck me, but I know less about this than you. But you know how I function in business.” 

Ana stopped breathing for a second at his statement. She didn’t know if he was offering himself outright or if it was just an expression. Still, the words coming out of his mouth caused her heart to pound against her ribcage. 

Damien heard her breath falter and lifted his head to look at her. “What’s wrong?” 

Ana lowered her eyes and shook her head. “It’s nothing.”

“What did you say to Marcus?” she questioned. 

Damien’s body went rigid. Ana could have pumped her fists in victory for diverting the embarrassing conversation beautifully. She wasn’t sure she had turned it in the right direction. 

“When?”

You know, right before he hit you,” she challenged. 

Damien growled and for a second, Ana was sure he wouldn’t respond. “Tell you what… You answer one of my questions and extend the courtesy to 

you. 

Ana didn’t like the sound of that, but she was too interested to say no. “Okay,” she agreed finally. 

Damien smiled victoriously. It made her weary about what he was going to ask. 

“Did you hate me when you were working at Wright Group?” he asked. 

“Why do you think I hated you? You were my employer… I didn’t have the right to hate you.” The way she worded it made Damien’s smile disappear. She had pretended to be distant because she had fallen so hard for him. 

Damien’s eyes narrowed and he leaned in, putting his hand on the side of her face, stopping her from moving away. “You beguile me, Anastasia,” he whispered. “Tell me… Please.” 

“How did you not know?” she asked, leaning into his hand, urging him to understand without her spelling it out for him. 

“Know what?” 

“Do you know what it did to me every day I walked into the office and knew you were so far out of my league that I shouldn’t imagine being with you?” She reached up and covered Damien’s hands with her own. She brought it to her mouth and kissed the pads of his fingers. 

Damien swallowed thickly. “No.”
