Sixteen

Catherine stops speaking, and the hall goes quiet.

“Who said that?” Alpha John asks, standing from his chair behind the podium.

“I did. I object to the marking and mating of Catherine Snell and Zachary Lachlan,” I say, smiling at the high-blood wolves in front of me.

“Who… who… are you?” Alpha John asks, his eyes looking at me.

“She is a human!” Felix cries, standing from his seat.

“A human? How did she get in here? The room is spelled!” Alpha John yells, looking from Felix to me.

I look around the room, seeing the old script written on various parts of the walls. They glow, their powers active.

“Those? Pfft. They don’t work on me,” I say.

“Dad?” Zach asks, looking at his father.

“Enough! You shouldn’t be able to walk into this room if you are human. The spells must not be working!” Alpha John yells, his face going red with anger. Looking at him, I’m surprised his anger hasn’t made his wolf surface.

“Of course, they’re working. This room is one of the oldest in your pack house, spelled by a very powerful witch. I see the power glowing on the walls….” I begin.

“Guards! Get her and take her to the dungeons!” Beta Kurt yells, joining his Alpha by standing next to him.

I look at the guards, who step forward, stopping when I shake my head, telling them no.

“Guards!” Beta Kurt repeats when they stop.

“They won’t attack me, Kurt,” I state, clasping my hands behind my back.

“Guards, do as Beta Kurt asks!” Alpha John orders. I see the guards cower at his request, some beginning to move forward in their attempt to follow his orders.

“Stop; you don’t have to follow your Alpha’s orders at the moment,” I smile grimly at the guards. Their stance relaxes with my words, having no longer to fight their Alpha.

“As I said, I object to this union,” I state, my head held high, looking each high-rank wolf in the eyes.

“Who is she? Why is she here?” Alpha John finally asks, looking around the room.

“She’s just a human from school….” Catherine begins.

“Oh, Catherine! I think I’ve established that I’m more than just a human, right?” I smile.

“What are you?” Zach asks. S~ᴇaʀᴄh the Find ɴøᴠel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“I guess… to you… I’m the most powerful thing in this room. And I object to Catherine being the Luna of this pack,” I smile, shrugging my shoulders. I want to play with them and have some fun.

“Moira,” Luna warns, standing beside me from the astral plane. I turn to look at her and smile. She may not be seen by the others in the room, but I can see her.

“Why do you object?” someone from the crowd asks. I see a little girl looking at me, wearing a beautiful blue dress with a dark blue ribbon tied around the waist. She sits in between her parents.

“Because she is not his true mate,” I answer. Some of the older wolves' gasp, including Sera’s parents.

“She is my second chance mate!” Zach talks back.

“No, she’s not. She’s your chosen mate. Catherine is yet to meet her own true mate,” I reply.

“I’m sorry. Catherine is what?” Luna Claire finally speaks.

“No!” Albert, Catherine’s dad, suddenly shouts, grabbing a staff from the closest guard’s hand and throwing it at me. The pole goes through me, clattering on the floor behind me. Everyone gasps, but I look up from my stomach, where the staff went through, and look at the guard Albert stole from.

“Restrain him,” I order. The guard and his neighbour come forward and grab Albert Snell by the arms and pull him to the back wall.

“Catherine,” I say, walking forward, my hands still clasped behind my back.

“Your fate is in your hands. You can choose to be the Luna of this pack, or you can choose your true mate, whom you will meet in a few months,” I say. Catherine looks at me, and I watch as her eyes dart from her parents back to me. I know she wants to say something. Her parents, her father especially, have had a massive influence on Catherine’s life since she started high school. I know it is her parents yelling at her for not being able to get a better mate than Zach that made her cry this morning.

“Shall I show you?” I ask. When no one responds, I wave my right arm in the air, an oval picture appearing above me. In the picture, a view of Catherine meeting her mate can be seen. You can’t see his face, just the back of his head as he kisses her for the first time. He is wearing the uniform of the Royal Guard. The scene moves to a hospital room, where Catherine holds a newborn baby in her arms.

“Mama, mama, I want to meet baby Dustin!” a little boy yells, running into the room with a bunch of red roses. Catherine smiles and watches her son as he climbs up onto the bed.

The scene shifts again, this time to Dustin. It follows Dustin going through school, falling over and scraping his knee, to graduating from university and becoming a Royal Guard. He is then seen with a knee-high girl running around his feet as his mate comes up and takes his hand.

“She’s so beautiful, love,” Dustin smiles at the blurry she-wolf.

In the next scene, we see an older version of Dustin sitting in a theatre wearing a suit. He smiles at the stage as a young woman walks out and sits before a piano. When she begins to play, the scene pans back to Dustin.

“Your mother would have loved to have seen this,” Dustin’s mate says. Dustin nods, a tear rolling down his face.

“She would,” he agrees.

I wave my arm again, making the picture disappear.

“That is your fate if you choose to wait for your mate. Your granddaughter will become a famous concert pianist and tour the world playing her piano. She will name her firstborn daughter after you. Your legacy will live on,” I tell Catherine.

The hall is silent as everyone watches Catherine make her decision. Catherine looks from me to her father and then to Zach.

“I love Zach. I choose to be Luna,” Catherine decides, smiling at Zach. He returns it and takes her hand, squeezing it.

“I do not bless this union,” Luna tells me. I glance at my sister, nodding in reply.

“I find it funny that you take my sister’s name, Luna. She gave you both gifts, yet you insult her by choosing another,” I scoff.

“She is his second-chance mate,” Alpha John says. I shake my head, looking at him with pity.

“Is that what he told you? Did he tell you what he really did to his true mate? Or shall I?” I seethe.

“Please tell,” a voice from the crowd finally says. I know it’s Blake, but I don’t turn to look at him.

“Guards!” Zach orders. I raise my hand at the stop sign.

“You forget, Zachary Lachlan, that I am the one with all the power at the moment,” I say.

“You!” Zach yells, taking a step forward. I release some of my power, and everyone begins to buckle toward the floor, submitting to me.

I walk up to Zach, watching him look at me with pain.

“Who are you?” Zach whispers.

“Have you not guessed? I’ve shown your mate her future if she wanted it. I have spoken about my sister, Luna, your goddess. Who do you think I am to walk into the hall of a strong werewolf pack and control them all with my power?” I ask. Zach shakes his head, not understanding.

“I am Moira, Goddess of Fate and Destiny. You’re welcome,” I whisper softly so only he can hear. I turn around and bring my power back in, allowing the people to breathe.

“Now, for why I am here. Zach, are you sure you want Catherine Snell as your mate?” I ask Zach.

“What happened to his true mate?” Luna Claire asks. I look at her. I know her past, as well. Like Sera, John rejected her, wanting his girlfriend instead. But when his girlfriend found her true mate, he returned to Claire. Lucky for him that he hadn’t marked his girlfriend, and Claire wanted him back.

“He asked his true mate to meet him after school the day he met her. Then he told all the teen werewolves also to be there. With the help of the Beta and Gamma teens, he openly rejected his true mate. He called her weak and told her she was ugly and not worthy to be the Luna of his pack. Which is funny, considering she was made for the role. His rejection, and the abuse she had endured from her pack mates, killed her,” I explain. Luna Claire gasps, holding her hand to her mouth.

“Not again, not again,” Luna Claire whispers.

“Mother,” Zach says, walking over to Luna Claire. She flinches at his approach, making him stop in his tracks.

“Claire,” Alpha John soothes, but she shakes her head, not wanting to have a bar of her mate.

“She is dead?” Luna Claire asks. I nod.

“She was just an omega, mum!” Zach yells.

“No. No. You do not get to say that. I was an omega, Zach. I was too! And you killed her for it? You let your pack hurt her for it? I thought I raised you better!”

“Mum!”

“Claire!”

“No!” Luna Claire cries, getting up from her seat before sitting down and standing again. Beta female Jackie stands up and walks over to Claire, hugging her.

“Sera died from the rejection, yes. Which is why I am here,” I tell Claire. She nods, looking at me.

“What is the punishment?” Luna Claire asks. I nod, straight to the point, which I like. Claire is the perfect Luna. Although Alpha males are born in the role, Luna’s are made to run a pack. Their life and experiences should help steer the pack to the right path.

“Those teen wolves who were there when Sera Mayvic was rejected and approved of the rejection, please stand,” I order. A group of teens scattered across the hall stand.

“Families, if you support your child’s decision to agree with the rejection of your true Luna, please join your children in standing,” I order. More wolves stand. I scan the room as I see many families with young pups standing.

“To the teen wolves, who participated in the bullying and physical and mental torture of your future Luna, stand.” I watch as those teens wobble to their feet.

“Clevedon Pack, if you believe that your future Alpha, Zachary, is correct in choosing his own Luna, stand.” More wolves stand, including Catherine’s mother. Now all the high-ranking families and most Clevedon Pack members are standing.

“Oh god,” Luna cries as she watches.

“For those of you who remain seated, you will be exempt from the punishment your pack mates will receive. Clevedon Pack, your goddess, Luna, mother Selene of the Moon, asked me to help her with her werewolves, particularly the rejection of your true Luna.

Werewolves have been rejecting their blessed mates for years, and your pack has become the same. As a result, your pack is now barren. Your Luna will not give you an heir, and adopting an heir will be pointless, as from now on, every wolf here standing is sterile. Your future Alpha and Luna have turned their backs on your goddess, and you have joined them in their fate. The Clevedon pack will die out. Those wolves seated will not continue your pack legacy. They will travel south. Two packs in the South will take you in. It is in those packs that your future lies. The Clevedon Pack will only become a memory,” I state.

“Are you sure?” Nora asks, entering the room on the astral plane with me. I nod.

“I want to be the one to break the threads,” Luna says. I look at my sister; she has tears in her eyes.

“Okay then,” I say, opening a portal to Corinth and opening the door. I look at Blake and Logan and wink at them before stepping through, my family walking through with me.
