Chapter 22 

“Hi sweet,” Cole said with a small smile, his voice bringing Hailey out of her shock. 

“Wha….wha….what are you doing here?” She stepped out, gently shutting the door. 

“Are you mad at me?” 

“Shouldn’t you be in the hospital right now?” She stared at him. He looked fine, and he was putting on a tick- loose cardigan so she couldn’t see his arm. 

“What are you even doing here?” 

“How did you get in? Did you gun down my securities? How did you even know where I live?” 

Hailey knew she was probably being a nuisance right now she didn’t care. Her heart was beating really fast and she couldn’t afford him to be here, not when her boys were so close by. 

“Are you okay? You look really tense like you just saw a ghost.” 

Hailey said nothing. 

“I know we are not on good terms but do you really hate me so much that my presence disgusts you?” 

Hailey sighed, massaging her temple. 

“You are right that we are not on good terms but how do you expect me to stay calm when you suddenly show up in my home? I don’t remember giving you my address!” 

“Getting your address is the easiest information to get about you.” 

“There you go! And you expect me not to be furious at you. I am literally not safe anymore. I am being stalked in my own home.” 

“I would never hurt you, Hailey.” He said sincerely and she could see the pain in his eyes. 

Hailes let out a deep breath. “What do you want? Aren’t you meant to be in the hospital? The doctor said you needed to be there for a few more days for them to monitor you.”

“I wrote a note. Told the Doctor to give you a letter. Didn’t he?” 

“I think we both know that things would have been better if you came to check up on me.” 

“And have your wife threaten me again?” 

Cole frowned. “Vanessa threatened you at the hospital?” 

“She made it clear that I should stay away from you. She said you got shot because of me. I have a lot going on with me and I can’t keep putting your life in danger. You should take your leave.” 

“For fucks sake why would you believe anything that bitch says? I am not in any way attached to her. You are my wife and no one can take that away from you. She wishes to be in your position so badly but she is not going to succeed in it.” 

“I know you have a lot you are going through right now but please don’t push me away.” 

“Look I am really grateful to you that you saved me but I am going to figure this out on my 

in my own.”

“When did you become this stubborn?” Cole stared at her in disbelief. She was in her pajamas set, looking really 

furious. 

“For fucks sake, Cole, you are still healing. You should stay in the hospital and get well soon. This is my life, of course, I am going to deal with my shit myself.” 

“Is there anything you are hiding from me?” 

Hailes swallowed painfully. “Wh….what do you mean?” 

“I know you hate me, but something doesn’t seem right with the way you are mad at me.” 

“What are you doing here? What do you want?” 

“I came to see you. We need to talk and you have been avoiding me.” 

“No, we have nothing to talk about. If this is about all that you did to me in the past, then I forgive you?”

“I really appreciate you saving my life. I mean, I don’t know anyone who would have done that for me but you came through for me. I am really grateful but that doesn’t mean I am going to come back to you.” She didn’t miss the pain in Cole’s eyes as she made this statement. 

Cole sighed, tucking his right hand in the pocket. “I’ve changed, Hailes. I promise you that I am a changed man. If I could turn back the hands of time, I give you my word that I’m going to cherish you.” 

“You don’t need to accept me with open arms right away. I only need to give me the chance to make it up to you. I want to earn your forgiveness. Please.” 

“I know how scary this time can be for you. You don’t need to feel alone when I am here for you. I have hired an investigator, I promise you that the people behind this will be caught and dealt with.” 

“Your actions are so thoughtful. Thank you but I will have this sorted on my own. If there is anything that would make me happy right now, it is for you to leave me the hell alone. I don’t need you to care about me anymore. And please stop telling everyone that I am your wife. You asked for divorce and I agreed.” 

“Please don’t use that statement against me. I already hate myself so much for saying that. And I told you my reason behind it. I’ve always loved you, Hailey. But the truth is that I was too egoistic to accept it. I am ready to do anything to get your forgiveness. Please just tell me what to do.” 

“My lawyer will send you the divorce papers.” 

Cole let out a deep breath, trying not to allow what She said to affect him. 

“There is no way I am going to sign the divorce papers. Why are you being so cruel to me? Is it because of Tyler?” 

“Please take your leave!” 

“Why? Is he in there with you? Am I disturbing you all’s alone time?” 

Hailey massaged her temple, thinking of what to say or do to make Cole disappear from her home. 

“I want nothing to do with you. Please respect my decision and take your leave.” She said word for word. 

“I’m going nowhere! I know what I went through when you left me. There is no way I am letting you leave me aga……” 

“Mommy I want some popcorn!” The door flung open, followed by the owner of the voice.

When the tiny voice came through, Cole Matthis knew it had to be one of Hailey’s sons. He was cool with the ideal of meeting him but that was until he clearly saw the little boy’s face. 

Cole froze where he stood. 

He saw the little boy come close to him and even hug his legs tightly but Cole was too stunned to move, say 

anything or even comprehend what was going on. 

“Ollie, Daddy is here!” The little boy ran inside for his twin brother. 

Hailey shut the door, then turned to face Cole. It was almost as though she was about to shed tears. “Please take your leave.” 

“Look, I promise, I am going to do whatever you say in the future but for now, please take your leave.” 

“What’s going on?” Cole finally found his voice, looking confused. 

“Let’s have lunch tomorrow and we can talk about everything but for now you need to take your leave.” She said. with pleading eyes and voice. Deep down in Hailey’s heart, She felt all of these were so sudden. She needed time to have a proper conversation with her boys. 

“What’s going on?” Cole asked again, still staring in shock but nothing prepared his eyes and heart when he saw two little boys of the same age stand by the door. Not only did they have smiles all over their faces, they looked 

so much like him. 

“Daddy!!!!” They screamed in unison, running towards him.
