DELILAH

I had been working for Nael for a week now.

Funnily enough, he was the exact opposite of Ilay, even though he was the notorious mafia boss.

At least I didn't get to see much of the mafia. Nael described it as the "police" of Daemon-Heaven and Lostland.

Someone had to keep order, and if he didn't mess with the bad guys, who would?

In the meantime, I had found out that it was actually about dirty drug deals, and I was in charge of laundering the money.

For a change, I actually enjoyed it because it took my mind off what had happened. Ilay had stayed away from me since the incident, which helped to distract me.

My father also played the role of the policeman and kept coming round to check on me.

Now the question arose as to who was actually the villain in this game.

I now understood why my father had such a good relationship with Nael. Nael was friendly to everyone. This morning he had even come to bring me a coffee.

This was behaviour that I didn't know from Ilay at least. I was always allowed to tidy up after Ilay.

There was a knock at the door when Nael entered and leant against the door. He had his hands in his trouser pockets and was watching me work.

As I typed a report into the keyboard with ten fingers, I looked up at him without interrupting my work.

"Can I help you, Nael?" I asked him, looking briefly at my screen and then back up at him.

"No. You've already done everything I needed help with. I'd like to invite you to lunch this time, do you fancy it?" he asked, looking at me sheepishly.

A slight smile played around my lips and I nodded "Would I be locked up if I said no?" I asked him and saved the file.

"Hmm, that's quite possible..."

I had to chuckle and nodded "I'd love to come with you," I replied and stood up while Nael held the door open for me.

"That's the answer I wanted to hear," Nael looked me in the eye and positively beamed.

"After all, I don't want to end up in some dungeon," I said jokingly, finally reminding myself of my own past. The smile disappeared from my face at this thought and I involuntarily bit my lip.

Nael had probably noticed my discomfort "You're safe here, Delilah," he assured me, to which I nodded "It's all right," I said quietly. I was speaking more to myself than to him.

"I thought we could go out for dinner tonight, what do you think?" he asked me. I nodded and wondered if my dad would come with me. He was usually always there "Is my dad coming?" I asked him, confused.

He shook his head: "No, I thought we could eat between us," he smiled at me.

"Oh..." I said and looked down at myself.

I was dressed in jeans and a shirt. I wasn't really dressed for lunch.

"If you give me a minute, I'll change quickly. I'm totally underdressed next to you..."

Nael laughed and shook his head: "I'll wait for you downstairs," he finally said. Compared to me, Nael always looked good. His suits always fitted like a glove, he could have attended a banquet in this outfit.

I hurried into my room and stood in front of my wardrobe.

Damn, I had never been invited to dinner by a man in my life. I felt stupid.

In the end, I decided on a simple cream-coloured dress that came down to my knees. I also wore skin-coloured tights and a pair of elegant black ankle boots.

I grabbed a black shoulder bag, cut my hair short and did my make-up discreetly. I sprayed myself with the perfume "Parfum de marly-Valaya" that Nael had given me as a little thank-you gift and walked down the stairs, satisfied.

Nael was waiting for me in an armchair at the entrance. He had his mobile phone in his hand and finally looked up at me when he heard me coming down the stairs.

"You look lovely," Nael could be a real charmer. He even embarrassed me.

My cheeks turned a rosy colour "Thank you," I said to him and stopped in front of him.

"I would have taken you in your other outfit..." he suddenly grinned at me and it took me a moment to realise what he was trying to tell me.

"Yes... I just feel uncomfortable looking inappropriate," I tried to explain myself.

Nael opened the front door for me and waited until I had gone through: "You're anything but inappropriately dressed," he confirmed once again.

Okay, game over. The blush on my face was hard to miss and I decided to keep quiet. That was too many compliments at once.

I followed Nael to his car park. He held the door of one of his limousines open for me and sat in the driver's seat himself.

Nael drove off and at that moment I wondered why we didn't teleport to the desired location.

"You sure have a lot of cars," I remarked, looking out over the landscape.

He nodded slightly "I do indeed, I love cars, driving them relaxes me," he finally said and looked at the road.

"Others would go for a massage or to the spa to relax" I saw him smile from the side "Do you need to relax, Delilah?" he switched on the radio and the song by Rihanna and Shakira "Can't remember to forget you" came on and before the part with the electric guitar started, Nael put the pedal to the metal and drove through the empty countryside to the next town.

I had to hold on tight because I hadn't experienced such high speeds for a long time. The last time I was in the car with my father was when we still lived together and went shopping.

"I'm going to have a heart attack..." I croaked out, holding on to the armrests while Nael looked at me nonchalantly.

"Look at the road... please," I begged him desperately as he slowed down again.

"That, my dear, is pure adrenaline and relaxes me at the same time," he said with a grin, "who knows, maybe you'll get used to it. After all, we still have to drive back."

"Oh God..." I mumbled to myself, while Nael laughed, "That's all right, I'll book you a massage and the spa right away."

I had to smile and slapped him gently on the shoulder.

"What else is there apart from cars?" I asked him and looked out of the window again.

He shrugged his shoulders: "Sport, music and work... I don't really have much time".

"What about your family?" I asked cautiously, to which he raised his eyebrows "Well, you've already met Ilay.... He's not very communicative and since the incident with his partner, he's also cut himself off from us," Nael told me and continued.

"We have two other brothers who have their own families, wives and children. They are busy with them. We see each other on special occasions and otherwise we don't have much contact... That's the price of our work and our status." A desperate smile played around his lips and finally he paused.

"Our mother disappeared many years ago. The time my father couldn't find for her cost them their relationship..." he sighed softly, switched off the car's engine and finally looked at me.

I nodded in understanding and bit my lower lip. Maybe I shouldn't have asked him...

"You're probably wondering why I'm still single," he finally said.

"Well, basically, your personal life is none of my business..." I finally said, leaving him to tell it himself.

He smiled at me and shook his head: "No, everything's fine. I lost my mate to a demon disease centuries ago, there was no hope," he finally said.

It must have been terrible," I whispered softly and looked into his brown eyes. His eyes were something special, they had different shades of colour, including red and green mixed with brown.

"Yes, it was, but I've learnt to deal with it now..." he suddenly frowned and looked at me.

"Can I ask you something too, Delilah?"

I nodded slightly and wondered what he meant.

"You were rejected by your mate, weren't you?" he finally asked, looking me in the eye as well.

I nodded slightly, feeling a pang at the thought.

"Yes, he rejected me... I accepted his rejection but never said mine," I whispered softly and looked down at my hands.

Nael gently grabbed my hands and looked me in the eyes: "I'm very sorry Delilah... What Ilay has done is unforgivable and no apology in the world can make up for it," he said and sighed softly.

I nodded slightly, "We were supposed to go out to eat, not mope," I smiled desperately to distract from the topic.

He nodded hastily "Indeed... I was just wondering... Oh, we can talk about that another time," he finally said and got out of the car.

I got out too and looked around.

I felt like I'd known Nael for years and not just two weeks.

Maybe it was because we both had a similar fate?

He opened the door of the restaurant for me, which looked very classy and, above all, expensive.

We were shown to a table by a waiter and it looked as if it had been a pre-booking, because we were served our starter as soon as we sat down. sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ Find_Nøvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

"You're good with numbers, we've all noticed that now. What else do you like to do?" asked Nael.

That was a good question, because for a whole year I did nothing but follow orders from men.

"I quite like baking, I usually end up burning my cake, but I still like doing it," I replied with a smile, remembering how my dad would eat my burnt cake every time and always say how good it tasted.

"I like to go jogging... and actually I spent most of my time with my demon too, it took a while for her to be submissive to me," I explained to him.

"I also go jogging every morning, if you fancy it, can we go jogging together in the morning? What do you think?" Nael suggested.

I couldn't help but smile and nodded, "The exercise would do me good in addition to sitting," especially as I needed to build up my stamina again.

"Do you know what powers your demon has yet?" Nael asked me next and I shrugged my shoulders.

"Not really... I don't know," I said disappointedly and looked at the waiter who was serving us our food.

"We'll change that, I'll help you with everything," Nael assured me and began to eat.

I hadn't laughed as much as I did today for a long time.

Apparently, there were not only devils in this world, but also angels.
