Chapter 6: Compensation

The woman who had called the police offered to settle with Rufus for $15,000 in damages. Nancy said that the woman was just taking advantage of the situation, but it hadn’t. worked out the way she anticipated.

Candice finished the transfer and both sides signed the settlement agreement. Afterward, the woman put on her sunglasses and looked Candice over. “Your husband is terrible to you. Why don’t you get a divorce and treat yourself to something good in the new year?”

Candice didn’t say anything and instead took the agreement to the police. “Officer, can I ask who that woman is?

The man turned the paper over. “She said her last name was Wilson.”

She thought he might be behind it.

That fateful day when Candice had opened the door and seen Byron with a room card in his hand, he had been smoking and showed a clear reluctance to go in. Naturally, he had given into the impulse to try her instead.

When Rufus was released from the police station that afternoon, Candice took the initiative to ask for a divorce

and split their assets in half.

The condition clearly annoyed him. “All you ever do is ask for money! Think of your mother and her heart disease. If she finds out you’ve been sleeping around, what will that do to her heart?”

Candice paled with anger and she gritted her teeth. “You’re the one who set me up!”

Rufus impatiently pushed her away. “I’m happy to divorce. You can keep the car, but nothing else!”

He was obviously the one in the wrong, but that did nothing for his temper. Candice felt something was off with his unwillingness to negotiate.

She dug deeper and found that all of their savings and finance, including the marriage property that she herself had put the deposit on, had been transferred to Rufus’s parents without her knowledge.

He had used both legal and illegal means, but was very cautious and didn’t leave any evidence to incriminate himself. All that remained to them as a couple was the Audi A8, which she wouldn’t be able to sell for more than fifty thousand dollars.

She suddenly realized she had been played.

Rufus’s mother was also a skilled actress, who had pretended to hold her son accountable while buying him time to screw Candice over.

However, the rumor of Rufus being accused by a woman quickly spread through the company and he was demoted as a result. His mother took revenge on Candice by spreading a rumor that she’d had an affair with a coworker. This led to Candice’s mother having a heart attack. She’d been rushed to the hospital overnight and still wasn’t in the clear.

The first thing Candice did was go to the hospital.

The ICU was on the second floor, and the male health clinic was on the third. It was inevitable that the two of them would meet. She just hadn’t expected to run into Byron on the first day.

Candice had just finished getting some water from the station near the information desk when she looked up

and saw him there. He was wearing gray pants and a light blue silk shirt. The outfit showed the clean lines of his tall body. Everything about his looks made her think of strength, from his handsome face to his mature aura.

One of the nurses called out to him. “Doctor Byron! We need a surgeon in the emergency department. There’s been a car accident resulting in severe organ rupture.”

Byron took the report from her hands. “Start the anesthesia.

I’ll be right there.”

Candice hesitated at the corner, then whispered a greeting. “Doctor Wilson.”

Byron turned around and paused. This was the fourth time they had met in just two weeks, and each meeting had been. different.

She wasn’t dressed in anything fancy, but it only served to highlight her good characteristics. Today she wore a blue denim dress, which gave her a fresh and gentle air. The dark circles under her eyes made her look a little haggard, but in her pure face the effect was still charming.

In fact, she had dressed to match his color scheme.

Byron had seen such tricks hundreds of times. He had thought Candice wasn’t that sort of woman, but it turned out she was just playing coy to tempt him in further.

He hadn’t liked her much to start with, and now he hated her even more. He frowned and brushed past without bothering to respond.

Candice didn’t mind. She had only greeted him out of courtesy. Now he seemed even less friendly than before.

Later that day, Byron caught up with Harry in the bathroom-

between meetings. Harry mentioned that Candice had spent the night in a chair outside the ICU, crying pitifully.

At first Byron was silent, but then he suddenly asked, “What happened?”  Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the ꜰindNʘvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“Heart attack. The patient almost didn’t make it.”

Byron zipped up his pants and left the bathroom, returning just seconds later. “Is Doctor Roger still seeing patients?”

He’s the head cardiovascular specialist in the region. His schedule is always pretty full.” Harry didn’t think much more about the question until he learned the next day that Doctor Roger was operating on a patient in the ICU himself.

Everyone in the hospital knew that Byron had a heart of stone. He never interfered on behalf of the patients.

Harry stopped him on the rooftop of the outpatient building. “Does it have to do with your ex–girlfriend Vicky? I know she‘ s married, but she did send you an invitation.”

Byron stood in the blowing wind and calmly responded. “I didn’t see any invitation.”

“How long has she been married?”
