Enchanted High Book I
Chapter Twenty-Three: Dragon

The wind rustled through his hair as he soared into the sky, bursting through the clouds, sending a wisp of it higher above with him. Beneath him, the scales of the dragon were rough against his legs, but a soothing grip to hold onto. The dragon had escaped with him from the canyon, agreeing to depart together.

He threw out his arms on either side of him, feeling the wind rip at his skin, at his clothes, and he let out a long scream of freedom he suddenly felt. A scream that had been contained for an uncomfortable time. Sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ (F)indNƟvᴇl.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

He then remembered the reason why it had been contained. The memory was vague in his mind; like a burry image. But he was being controlled by the same desire to get to the mountain, even if he didn’t know why. He yanked the dragon’s horns and it began to descend gently below the clouds.

He began scanning the ground for the mountain he desperately needed to reach. The rocky mountain with flaming lava that was about to pour out of it.

He heard a crack of sound, so sharp he needed to cover his ears, and the next moment a flash of red lightning swished past his face. The dragon veered away, narrowly missing it. The red lightning shot through the clouds, until it disappeared, leaving a trail of smoke behind.

Another crack of sound and another flash of lightning later he felt an extremely sharp pain in his hand. He wanted to scream but no sound came. He clutched the wound, feeling cold, sticky blood trickle over it.

Trying to ignore the pain, he heard a loud growl coming from behind him.

He tilted his head and a disastrous image came into view.

Another dragon was chasing after him, hot on his trail, and not very friendly. He was just about to yank the dragon, commanding it to speed up, when he saw the face of the rider. Instantly, he felt an intense hatred for the rider, which fueled his strength against the numb pain of his hand.

He used his good hand to maneuver his dragon. It increased its speed, shooting through clouds like the lightning did. He heard another crack of sound; another flash of lightning, and his dragon slowed down to a stop.

And then, helplessly, it began falling.

He attempted to steady the dragon, but the dragon was also injured now; wings smashed in odd angles. Without any mode of flight to keep the boy remained in the air; he also plummeted with the dragon towards the cold and dark ocean below.

The boy couldn’t give up; he shouldn’t. He struggled, and kicked his legs in the air to bring himself towards the dragon a few feet away, he thought he could use the dragon to break his fall as they hit the ground, but it felt impossible to move.

He watched the bowl of water clash together in waves, as if trying to reach up and grab him. Realizing he shouldn’t waste time trying to move, he shifted to a diving position, to make sure he didn’t get injured when he hit the water. In a matter of seconds, he pulled in a huge amount of breath, before his entire body became submerged. The water stung his skin; but it could have been worse. He slowed, going deeper and deeper, and he tried to swim, tried to reach the surface, to catch a breath, but he was being anchored to his death.

It felt as if all the blood was being drained out of him, each drop merging with the molecules of the water.

I can’t sleep ... the growling has gone worse. And now I can even hear the heavy thuds of the thing moving about in the attic. But my boss - oh, it couldn’t bother her. She’s fast asleep, snoring.

I’m terrified.
