64 A mental illness that needs to be

fixed

The stiffness in her chest that vanished because of Nicolai’s antics returned at once. Ari lowered her hand and looked down at the bandages that Nicolai pasted on her scratches. Only if someone could bandage her broken and ripped heart as well. But alas, o bandage could patch up her heart which turned bleak and tired after staying with Noah for so long.

“I got a divorce,” Ari answered him. She did not even know why she was telling this to the man whom she found insufferable and annoying. Was it be use he was not someone whom she was close to? Or was it because Ari knew that her impression according to Noah was already bad enough that it couldn go any

further down?

She did not know what the reason was but Ari found

herself speaking, “The divorce agreement was finalized and stamped. Now I only need to go to the Civil Affairs Bureau and pick up the divorce decree”. Something she was going to do the first thing in the morning. Ari did

not want Noah to take it back in case he had second

thoughts.

Maybe he thought that she would try to beg him once the divorce was finalized or perhaps come rushing to him if she was only acting up to get his attention. But Ari was not going to do either of those things, as she truly did want to divorce Noah.

“Wait a second there,” Nicolai leaned forward. His arm that was thrown off behind the chair slithered forward as he placed it on the table. With a genuinely confused reaction, he questioned, “You were crying because you got the divorce that you wanted?”

“Yes,” Ari replied with a nod, and the man’s l ows furrowed even more. He looked at her and questioned, “You do know that it’s weird, right? Or is it just me?”

Ari puffed out a breath. She was not even surprised that the man was unable to understand the emotions

that she felt at the moment when Ari found out that Noah had signed the divorce agreement.

“No matter how bad the relationship was, in the end, we were together for three years,” Ari tried to be patient as explained it to him. Her eyes flashed with a

bitterness that she felt in her mouth and spoke in a hoarse voice, “I mean he might have never loved me, but I did…” from the time I was sixteen and maybe

even more.

“F*cking mental,” Ari did not even snap out of her heavy emotions when she heard Nicolai make that offensive remark. She snapped her head up and looked at the man, who seemed to be now staring at the screen that was displaying their order number.

“Excuse me?” Ari’s voice raised a notch. Did … Did this

man just call her mental?

Nicolai turned to look at her he did not loo the least

bit apologetic. Instead, he arched a brow an

questioned, “What? Did you not hear what I said?”

‘I did. I was just giving you time to change your mind, Ari thought scathingly. She glared at the man as if glaring at him would result in him dying by getting shot in the head. However, no matter how hard she

glared, Nicolai remained unscathed.

Unscathed enough to look up and down at the woman who came to serve their meal.

“I am not mental. And that is a very rude thing to say to someone, Mister De Luca, she told the man just as the waitress left. “I have a lot of things that I want to hurl your way, but I don’t.”

“Because you don’t have the guts?” Nicolai offered as he bit into the French fries that were placed in the

bucket.

Ari sputtered, she coughed after taking a sip of her lemon mojito. Raising her hand, she patted herself on the chest and then snapped harshly, “No, because I am well-mannered and polite.”

“Is that your way of calling me a bastard?”

“I will never use such language.”

“Doesn’t mean that your context is any different,” said

the man with a lift of his shoulders.

Ari opened her mouth to retort but stopped midway. Because she did in fact have something similar to what Nicolai said.

The man quirked the corner of his lips before popping another fry in his mouth and licking the ketchup off his fingers. He did not seem to be offended by the fact

that Ari had more or less silently acroad that she had

Something crept up in Ari’s chest, and she was certain that it was disbelief. It was. Yup. Totally.

“Well, you did vocalize your opinion about me. So, I think we are even,” Ari did not even know why she was sitting with this man and eating French fries and a burger. She should have pulled a straight-up

restriction notice against this man instead of sitting here with him.

Nicolai bit into his layer triple cheeseburger, he then raised his head and looked at Ari before say ng, “Nu huh. I called you mental because you are…u called me a bastard in your mind because you wanted to take a low dig at me.”

Ari clenched her fingers around the cup that held her lemon mojito as if she wished she could hurl it at the

man in front of her. “I am not mental.”

“You cried because your abusive, cruel, cheating husband divorced you… Liar, Liar, Liar, pants on fire. I am sorry to tell you this, but it’s a mental illness, what do they call it? Stalker syndrome?”

“Stockholm Syndrome,” Ari corrected for him, but at the same time, she felt speechless. A man, who couldn’t even pronounce the term correctly, was actually making more sense than her.

“Yup, that’s the one,” Nicolai snapped his finger and pointed at her. “If that is the case, then I suggest you see a psychiatrist. There is no need to be ashamed of it, I mean some people do have——”
