Faith With Wolves Book 2
2. The Lies We Tell

Caleb

To say I'm worried is an understatement. A deadly virus is spreading and killing vampires and werewolves. Not only do I have to protect my pack but I have to protect my mate. This is just the beginning of our relationship and I refuse to lose her already. Matter of fact I refuse to lose her ever.

Zane and Sasha left yesterday and the tension that's been lingering in the pack is gone. Despite Zane being as friendly as possible the pack was still restless and nervous. Many of my pack members have never seen a vampire up close and the ones who have barely got away with their life.

It's no secret vampires and werewolves hate each other. We've been enemies since the beginning of time. I used to think there was nothing natural about a vampire. They drink human blood, are technically dead, and are mostly loners.

Werewolves may eat raw meat in wolf form but we're way more civilized than vampires. Without seeing us shift you would think we were human. Hell, you're practically human until you shift at the age of thirteen.

Which is why I didn't think a deadly virus would ever affect vampires.

But now thier ripping their hearts out and I have to make sure the one that beats just for me stays intact. Faith may be half fairy but I'm still worried about her. Her situation is so complicated I can't help but worry.

Faith smells like a vampire and she drinks blood but because she's human she also needs food to survive. She has a heartbeat and gets sick like a human, yet has rapid healing like a vampire. Her eyes also turn gold when angry or aroused instead of red. My mate's existence is so unique it's kind of frightening.

Moon Goddess give me strength

Trying to ignore the headache forming I mind-link Dallas. He's been slacking on his beta duties lately since finding his mate but I can't fault him because I've been doing the same since Faith moved in a month ago.

A few moments later Dallas enters my office smelling just like sex and sweat. "Were you with Ruby instead of helping train the pups?" I roll my eyes annoyed.

He shrugs. "Sorry, I got a little distracted. Did you hear news about another pack being sick?"

I shake my head. As soon as breakfast ended I found Dallas and let him know of the news I received. He was just as shocked as me. We're both worried about the pack and I've been considering closing the pack's borders, Dallas agrees with me.

"No, but I received a strange phone call... Elijah and Everette want to meet."

He looks shocked. "Elijah and Everette of the Twin Peaks pack? They hate us specifically you for sleeping with their Luna?" he says making me growl.

"That was a long time ago, it's in the past."

"Is it? because it only happened two years ago. They threatened to kill you if they saw you again." he tries to remind me like what happened was so forgettable.

Standing up I run my hand through my wavy black hair. It desperately needs a cut. "Look I'll be fine. I'll take a few warriors with me and I'll be back before dinner. Can you keep an eye on things while I'm gone?"

Dallas nods. "Sure can. Does Faith know?"

"No. I don't want her to come. She needs to stay here where she's safe. Plus...."

"The Brooke thing," he answers, and I swallow the lump in my throat.

"Yeah, that."

"What are you going to tell her when she asks where you're going?"

I shrug. "No idea." sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ FɪndNovᴇl.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

After finishing some paper work Dallas and I head downstairs. As soon as Faith sees me, she jumps into my arms and the terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach feels worse. I know I shouldn’t lie to her but I feel being honest in this situation won't help. The past needs to stay in the past.

“Caleb! I missed you so much!” she squeals and presses a chaste kiss to my lips.

“I missed you too.” I did. We haven’t got any alone time with her parents being here. But since they’ve left, we can get back to being us, Faith and Caleb.

Snuggling her closer my nose runs along the crook of her neck. I love her scent of strawberries and roses. It's my favorite smell on my favorite person. I kiss her mark and place her gently down on her feet. “I have a meeting to go to but when I return I’m all yours.”

She frowns. “Where are you going? I didn’t see anything on your schedule when I checked this morning.”

“Something came up. I have to meet the alpha’s of the Twin Peaks Pack.”

Immediately her frown is replaced with a smile. “Really? I’ve always wanted to go there. I heard they have the cutest ice cream shop. It looks like one of those old-fashioned diners and they only accept cash, no cards. Can I go with you?”

“How about I just bring you back a carton of your favorite ice cream, Rocky Road right?”

She chuckles. “No way! It would just melt before you got back. It’ll be easier if I just come with you. We can turn it into a date night.”

Hesitating, I rub her shoulders. “Baby this isn't a social call, it's business. You can go with me next time.” I kiss her forehead and try to walk away but she pops in front of me blocking my way.

“Why don’t you want me to go with you? Is it because I’m a vampire? Are you ashamed of me?”

Sighing I cup her chin and look into her glossy gray eyes. She's trying to block out her emotions. but I can feel how upset she is, mostly insecure. “Don’t be upset, please. I’m not ashamed of you Faith."

"Then why don't you want me to go with you?" she whispers looking down at her feet instead of at me.

I can't think of any more excuses so I just tell her the partial truth. "Look Faith the alpha's of the Twin Peaks Pack don't like me very much. I have no idea how this meeting is going to go. Alex and a few other warriors are coming with me. If a fight breaks out then I don't want you in the middle of it. I'm just thinking of your safety."

Faith scoffs. "Exactly why I should come with you. I can protect you and with this new threat around I would feel comfortable knowing I could heal you if something happens."

I glance around before whispering. "You don't even know if you can heal the virus."

She smirks. "But if I can it's better to have me with you don't you think?"

"You're so clever, aren't you? Fine, you can come with me."

Her arms wrap around me and I place a kiss on her forehead. "This is going to be fun, a little road trip just me and you."

"Yup fun," I reply. But part of me knows this trip is going to be anything but fun. I just have a very bad feeling about this meeting.
