Him POV

Clank!!

They lock the cell door behind me. But they’re not chaining me up against the wall this time, - why?

I’m covered in blood and scratches from the fight. I won. But it wasn’t easy.

That vampire went rogue and started biting me wherever he could. I was too weak to go for a straight kill, but I had no other choice. That’s why I grabbed him and body slammed him to the ground to crack his skull. Without him fighting as much, it was easier to rip his head off.

Movement in the far dark corner gets my attention. And that’s when I see her, sitting against the wall. My so-called prize.

Is this why they didn’t chain me up? So I can ’enjoy’ my prize? These assholes are real psychos.

I ignore her and walk to the other corner. I’m sure I’ll have better sleep on the floor than being chained up to a wall. Her heart beat seems to calm down.

Half way through my attempted nap, I notice her breathing becoming shaky. That’s when it hits me, - she’s cold.

In her condition she definitely won’t make it past the night.

Fuck!

I get up and walk to her. Just as I try to reach for her, she speaks.

“If you touch me, I will kill you.”

My wolf and I can’t help but smirk at her comment. How can someone in her condition say such things with such a serious tone. She’s definitely a fighter. No wonder she’s lasted this long.

“You’ll die from the cold before you get a chance to.” I bend down to see her face.

She really is beautiful, regardless of the bruising and blood. Such long black hair and beautifully haunting blue eyes. She definitely is small. The rag she’s wearing looks oversized on her. People could easily mistake her for a teenager.

“Are you saying you want to keep me alive?”

“No. I just don’t want you dying in my cell.”

“What do yo-you have in m-mind then?” She’s already stuttering from the cold, but still trying to sound serious.

I can see her staring at my body suspiciously, and that’s when I realize her concern is on me being shirtless.

I chuckle at the thought of her being worried and conservative in a hell hole like this. I don’t even know what my face looks like, - haven’t seen it in almost a month.

I sit down next to her and pull her into my arms. She tries to fight me but whimpers from the pain. I know she must have a few broken bones.

“Don’t worry. I’m not going to do anything.” I try to coo her.

She looks at me worriedly and hesitantly relaxes in my hold.

She sighs as she lays her head down on my chest.

“Why are you wolves always so warm?”

“I don’t know. Why do you humans always want to know stuff?”

“Curiosity makes life interesting. It makes it worth living.”

“So you live by killing others?”

“Stop grouping me with those assholes. Not all humans are like that. Why else would I be on this side of the cell doors?” She’s firm with her words but snuggling deeper into my chest, almost like she’s afraid I’ll pull away.

“Why are you on this side of the cell then?”

She sighs and stays quiet for a few seconds. “Because I’m not like them.”

Her words carry such deep emotions. Something tells me there’s a deeper meaning to it.

“So what’s a high ranking wolf like yourself doing in a place like this?” She asks me.

“How do you know I’m a high-ranking wolf?”

“You might have forgotten, but I was there. I saw the fight. Your aura alone managed to scare the guards. One of them actually pissed himself.” She slightly giggles at the memory. “So what are you, - Alpha, Beta, Gamma? You know, I’m just gonna start saying the Greek alphabet if you don’t stop me any time soon.”

I can’t help but chuckle. I always found humans’ ignorance of our lifestyles a nuisance, but she actually amuses me.

“I’m a Beta.” But my smile falters at the words. “I was a Beta.”

“No. You are a Beta. No one can take that away from you. Even being here, or being without a pack, your wolf still carries the strength of a Beta.”

“You’re very wise for someone so………young and…….. human.”

“Well you’re very warm for someone so scary looking. Guess you can’t judge a book, right?”

“Right.”

Her softer tone tells me she’s close to falling asleep, but at least she’s warming up.

Claim!

I hear my wolf in my head.

What? What are you going on about? Claim what, - her?

I must be imagining things. I know she’s not my mate. I would have been able to tell. So why would he want us to claim her. I must have heard wrong.

Claim! Claim her.
