The next morning

There is nothing for Layla to pack. She knows there is nothing for her to do. Nothing to help stall.

There is no reason for her to stay for even an extra day. But she wants to see his face just one more time.

She hears a knock on the door and sees Margret’s face pop in.

“Layla. Is there anywhere around the pack-grounds you would like me to take you today?” She gently asks, and Layla can’t but wonder why Margret would ever ask such a request.

“Are you my babysitter now? Checking that I don’t bother anyone else?” She asks hesitantly.

But Margret matches Layla’s confused look with her own.

“Actually, the Alpha requested that I make sure no one bothers you.”

Me? Is he trying to make my last day as comfortable as possible? Is he that eager for me to leave?

If that’s the case, she still wants to say goodbye to him one last time.

“Can I see him then?”

Margret looks up at her questioningly.

“Unfortunately, Alpha Nicholas is very busy today.”

“Oh.” She says dejectedly. “Are there any chores that you might need help with today?” Layla never thought she would ask about chores, and it’s clear, neither did Margret.

“Ahem. Gamma Ben and a few pack members are busy sorting out the storage room. You can help out there if you want.”

“Sure.” She says immediately.

She rushes to get her shoes on. Margret always complains about it, saying it's dangerous.

Margret leads her to the storage room on the west wing.

Meanwhile

Nicholas is sitting in his office with Tyler, trying to catch up on work.

“I’ve sent out requests and the reports I’ve received have more results than I thought it would.” Tyler says as he hands the file over to Nicholas.

He continues. “Other packs have reported to have had random rogue attacks, as expected. But the nature of these attacks seem just as violent. And,…..the other weird thing is that it’s happening in other shifter-packs as well.”

Nicholas raises his brow as he continues to read the report, - attacks among wolf-, bear- and lion-shifters. It’s just as he suspected. Someone is messing with shifter-transformations.

“And Jerry?”

Tyler sighs. “His attack in town really did cause a lot of casualties. The town’s people are still shaken up by it. I won’t be surprised if they start shunning shifters again. But it’s obvious that something was done to him. He even killed his own mate. It seems he transformed at his house, and it just went all hay wire from there. And ......when we had the body looked at, we found the same toxins we found in the other rogues.”

Nicholas clenches his fist on his desk.

“Alpha?” Nicholas looks up. “Do you know what’s going on?”

“I had my suspicions. But I’m still not sure how or who.” He taps his finger on his desk a few seconds as he thinks back to something. “Do me a favour Tyler. Find out if there have been any random and wild vampire attacks too.”

“O-kay.” Tyler answers a bit confused.

But Nicholas has a suspicion that all the strange things that have been happening lately must be somehow related. The random shifter-trackers. Sebastian’s so-called visit. The wild rogue attacks.

“Does Jerry have any other family members?” Nick asks.

“No Alpha.”

“Then be sure to give him a proper send-off together with his mate.”

“Yes Alpha.” He says as he peeks at the incoming message on his phone. “Oh yes.” He snickers. “There seems to be one more thing I need to mention. I just didn’t expect he would just show up.”

Nick raises his brow.

“The head of Bio Tech Corp is in town. And he seems very eager to make friends with you.” Tyler says with a cheeky smile. “He apparently doesn’t understand the concept of ’making appointments’ though. He is on his way here as we speak.” He waves his phone.

“Well, apparently he wants to talk about future plans, - in how to improve and secure medical assistance to supernaturals. His company is basically building a brand for harmony between supernaturals and humans.” Tyler says somewhat impressed.

They can both hear the car pull up the front of the house just as Tyler finishes.
