Thinking of that, she set down her coffee cup, opened the door, and left with determination. 

Kadin observed the anxious expression on Nadia’s face as he trailed closely behind, pursuing her. 

“Nadia, what happened?” 

“Nothing. I have to leave now.” 

Kadin gazed at her retreating figure as she vanished from the corridor, overwhelmed by a sense of loss. 

Nadia seemed to be slipping further away from him. She was unwilling to confide in him even when something troubled 

her. 

Nadia hastened her steps back to the ward and immediately looked for the caregiver upon entering. 

The caregiver was not in the living room. Then, Nadia hurried into the ward, where her grandmother was still slumbered with closed eyes. 

Tears welled up uncontrollably in Nadia’s eyes as she collapsed onto the bed beside Iris, her voice choked with emotion. 

“Grandma, Grandma, wake up!” 

Panicked, she urgently pressed the bedside pager. 

In a matter of moments, a nurse rushed over. 

“Miss Lewis, what happened?” 

At that very moment, Iris slowly opened her eyes and saw her granddaughter lying beside her, tears glistening in her eyes. 

Iris grasped Nadia’s hand tightly and asked with concern. “What’s wrong. Nadia?” 

“Grandma, you’re finally awake! I thought you had left me.” 

Nadia hurriedly wiped her tears and embraced Iris tightly. 

Just then, the caregiver emerged from the restroom. “What’s going on? What happened?” 

She went to the bathroom after the patient fell asleep, and upon her return, she was surprised to see so many people gathering in the ward.. 

She worried something might have happened to the patient. 

Nadia glanced at the caregiver and turned her gaze to Kadin, who followed her into the ward. 

“Dr. White, could you please check my grandmother to ensure she’s not in any serious trouble?” 

She couldn’t bear the thought of losing Iris, and Iris couldn’t afford any accidents. 

Kadin picked up the stethoscope and examined Iris once more. “There’s nothing to worry about. Your grandmother’s condition is stable now. With further recuperation, she can have the treatment.” 

Hearing this, Nadia’s heart, which had been lifted with anxiety, finally found solace. 

But the caregiver appeared from nowhere, so she dared not be careless. 

Nadia turned her head and fixed a cold glare upon the carer. “Who sent you here? We never hired a caregiver!” 

The caregiver caught Nadia’s piercing gaze and recoiled, answering honestly, “It was the director of the hospital, Mr. Hartman, who summoned me here. What’s going on? It feels as though I’ve done something dreadful.” 

“Why did this girl treat me as if I was on trial? I just went to the bathroom!” the caregiver thought. 

Suddenly, Nadia understood the situation. The change in the ward was arranged by William, probably for the sake of James, which made it plausible that William had also arranged for this caregiver. 

She couldn’t help but marvel at her husband’s great influence that could even make the hospital offer a one–stop service. 

Nadia noticed that the caregiver took good care of her grandma, and the caregiver was startled by what she did just now. 

“It’s alright. I apologize for startling you. In the future, my grandmother will require your assistance more, and I’ll come to visit whenever I can.” 

It was all just a misunderstanding 

“Is everything clear now? No worries. I’ll give my best since I’m being paid. Otherwise, Mr. Hartman wouldn’t have arranged 

for me here.” 

The caregiver then left after seeing that everything was all right. 

There were only Nadia and Iris who were in the ward now. Nadia clasped Iris’s hand and asked with genuine concern,

“Grandma, how are you feeling now?” 

“Don’t worry about me, dear. This is a high–class ward, along with attentive doctors and nurses. There is even a carer who takes care of me. I really feel very comfortable here.” 

Iris told a white lie. In fact, she was vomiting whatever she ate, and her whole body was in pain. 

She resorted to lies just to alleviate Nadia’s worries. 

Nadia studied Iris’s frail form, realizing that her grandmother didn’t want to let her worry by saying so 

Rising to her feet, Nadia adjusted Iris’s pillow and gently assisted her to a more comfortable position. 

Taking out a comb from her bag, Nadia carefully brushed Iris’s hair. 

Nadia knew that her grandmother had always valued her appearance and meticulously groomed her hair when she was young and in good health. 

After combing Iris’s hair, Nadia tenderly massaged Iris’s shoulders and arms to ease her pain. 

When Nadia noticed a slight bruise where Iris had received her injection, Nadia fetched a towel and prepared some hot water to aid in soothing the discomfort.. 

Iris gazed at her granddaughter. Even though she was not her biological kin, Nadia was the most filial among all her grandchildren. 

“Nadia, don’t fuss over me. It’s getting late. You should hurry back” 

Nadia was just married, and Iris didn’t want Nadia to spend much time with her. She thought that Nadia should return home 

to be with her husband. 

“Grandma, I’ll stay for a while longer. Once you fall asleep, I’ll head back.” 

Upon hearing Nadia’s words, Iris quickly lay down and closed her eyes. 

“I’m going to sleep now. You can go back.” 

Nadia dutifully stayed in the ward to accompany Iris for more than half an hour until she witnessed Iris peacefully dozing off. Only then did she collect her bag and prepare to leave. 

As it was International Working Women’s Day, Nadia stopped by the flower shop on her way out of the hospital. 

Due to the holiday, the shop remained open for a few extra hours, and during that time, she managed to sell over 200 dollars worth of flowers. 

Exhausted, she returned to Orchid Valley, finding the place shrouded in darkness. 

It seemed that James hadn’t come back yet. She couldn’t help but think that her husband’s job was really hard as at programmer, and he toiled away until late into the night every day. 

James provided her with a monthly allowance of 1000 dollars for her expenses, and witnessing his hard work, Nadia resolved to cook him more delicious meals in the future. 

Remembering what happened the previous night, Nadia didn’t lock the room door. 

Eventually, she only locked the door of her own room after freshening up. 

It was really a busy day that day, and Nadia was so tired. Therefore, as soon as her head touched the pillow, she drifted off 

into dreams. 

Meanwhile, James didn’t return to the Orchid Valley. Instead, he instructed the driver to take him to Mountainville. 

He didn’t want to go back to the Orchid Valley and confront Nadia, who he barely knew at home. 

Early the next morning, James woke up, clad in his housecoat, and made his way to the dining room. The maid had already set the table with an array of sandwiches and milk. 

There was also an assortment of delectable snacks on the table. However, as James seated himself and took a bite of the sandwich, he suddenly felt that it tasted bad, and his appetite vanished. 

How had he never noticed the bad taste of the breakfast before? 

Images of Nadia’s savory lamb kebab infiltrated his thoughts, which made his mouth water. 

When had lamb kebab become so appetizing to him? 

He turned to Emma, who stood beside him. “Emma, prepare me a lamb kebab.” 

Emma was taken aback. Hadn’t James always shunned lamb kebabs before? 

“What’s going on? It’s so unbelievable,” she thought. 

“Yes, Mr. Howe,” Enima replied, and she promptly made her way to the kitchen. 

Chapter 25 

Soon enough, Emma returned with a plate of steaming lamb kebab. 

James eagerly picked up a piece of it with the fork and began to cat, but after a few seconds, he set his fork down in 

disappointment. 

The flavor of the lamb kebab was all wrong, and it didn’t taste good at all. 

He put the fork on the table and went upstairs. 

Emma observed the untouched breakfast on the table, thinking with confusion, “What’s wrong with Mr. Howe today? Normally, he would devour everything in sight, so why was he barely eating today?” 

She then sampled the snacks on the table, but to her surprise, they tasted just as they always had. 

Meanwhile, Nadia had purchased some bread and milk on her way to the hospital. 

When she arrived, Iris had already finished her breakfast and was preparing to have an intravenous drip. 

Suddenly, a commotion erupted outside, and the voice that echoed outside was all too familiar to Nadia.
