Flight of Fancy
Chapter 10

Jack Dawson was sick of his job. Well, he actually adored his job, he just hated other people doing it so poorly. They didn’t care and he really did.

Finding potential threats on Facebook was an important task. There were so many people out there speaking of civil disobedience, anarchy, hating the government (the very people trying to protect us) that it was paramount they be kept in check. None of his colleagues cared. As long as they kept up their quota of “potentially dangerous individuals”, they were fine and could spend the rest of the day posting “meaningful” pictures of their food and selfies on social media.

But not Jack Dawson!

This was more than a job. It was a responsibility. He would be quite happy doing this in his spare time if somebody asked him. The world was full of dangerous minds, willing to bring down governments, speak lies and lead society into chaos and disorder.

Without the government keeping us safe and managing the economy, humanity would be ruined!

If they didn’t keep those terrorist and communist countries under control, the world would know evil.

Especially those terrible communist countries like China and Russia! Everyone knows they would destroy freedom if they could. It was a good thing western society was more advanced and better organised.

Just imagine one of those crazy Russians deploying a nuclear missile to destroy the USA.

But with NATO and the US military, the world was afraid to try.

They wouldn’t dare!

Yes, he concluded, he actually loved his job, but it wasn’t taken seriously by most. He would love to get in the thick of it and get his hands dirty with some real action and not just cyber crime.

He did like his boss. Jacobs appeared just as dedicated as he and took his job very seriously. Jacobs knew that Dawson was pulling his weight more than others.

I hope he knows!

They’d had conversations about the dangers in the world several times. They were on the same page. He was sure that Jacobs would eventually give him something more meaningful to tackle.

From his cubicle, his eyes perceived the figure of Joan Lewis, Jacobs’ personal assistant, another of those disinterested morons only excited about the next pay check and a good night out, not even remotely caring about the future of mankind. He had to admit that she had a nice figure, though. She was wearing a tight ankle-length black dress with a cut on the right and a relatively loose red blouse, which still revealed a substantial bosom and an excellent physique. Her outfits always brought out her best assets – her ass. Her face was also pretty in a conventional way, with shoulder-length blonde hair and a slutty expression, which to Dawson was a sign of lack of intellect. Dawson caught himself staring and averted his eyes.

Focus on the task!

Anyway, she was the same as everyone else, just interested in going out with her friends, taking selfies at wild parties and probably fucking loads of men. These people needed to be taught a lesson and he knew exactly what lesson he would teach Joan.

Although his sexual encounters had been rare of late, he was a shark when it came to women. He loved to take charge in bed and show the women how it was done.

They don’t know what they’re missing.

Joan seemed to be coming down the corridor, toward him. His heart started racing. In a way, he didn’t want Joan to stop for small talk because he hated small talk and people were always so keen to do it, but he also wanted her to come over, to take in her scent and feel her presence. He would usually get an erection, which was always fortunately hiding under his desk.

Is she stopping? I think she is. Fuck…

“Hey Dawson, what’s shaking?”

What’s shaking? Really?

But, dear lord, those hips and that ass… He was already feeling a tingling in his lower region, but tried to control it.

“Nothing much,” he said. “How can I help you?”

Keep it to business only, thank you very much.

“Jacobs wants to see you in his office. Pronto.”

As if waiting for a reply or maybe a tip, Joan stood there for a few seconds, shrugged her shoulders and walked away. Dawson sat there looking at the mesmerising departure of Joan Lewis and again found himself immersed in unsavoury thoughts. This was no time for his sexual appetite to rear its ugly head.

What could Jacobs possibly want?

He liked the man, but was still always apprehensive when he got called to his office. Usually, when people were called to his office, it wasn’t good news. They’d more often than not get an earful for slacking off on the job or something similar. That’s why he was so proud never to have been on the receiving end of that tongue-lashing.

Oh well, it can’t be helped. Best not to prolong these matters.

He took a deep breath and walked to Jacobs’ office at the very furthest end of the corridor, past the toilets and some other offices, feeling grateful that Joan’s charms didn’t have a big enough effect this time.

He could swear people were looking at him strangely as he took the long walk to the boss’s office.

Do they know something?

He couldn’t imagine Jacobs firing him. There was simply nothing to complain about. He was a model of diligence. A few more strange looks and here was the door. He glanced around to make sure nobody would observe him, then took a deep breath and turned the silver door handle.

*******************

There were two men Dawson had never seen in the office. Jacobs was sitting on one of the small chairs in front of the desk, not his “power” chair behind the desk. The two men were looming over Jacobs, sitting on the desk itself. Jacobs, this man of strength, character, potency and intelligence looked very small and paled into insignificance compared to the other two. They were apparently much higher up the government ladder.

One of the men, who was black with very short black hair and wearing a black suit with a white shirt and black tie, nodded his head towards Jacobs ever so slightly, almost imperceptibly. It was obviously a sign for Jacobs to start talking.

“Dawson, we have a problem.”

Dawson didn’t even realise that his pupils had dilated and he swallowed a big gulp of saliva, which went down like a ton of bricks, making him almost choke on his own bodily fluids. He managed to compose himself and fend off a coughing fit.

Jacobs, obviously flustered by the important visit, took a moment before realising his choice of words wasn’t the greatest. Jacobs could see the fear and anxiety on Dawson’s face and decided to put him out of his misery.

“There’s a problem with some strange power sources,” Jacobs continued. “You’ve probably not heard of this.”

Was it a question or a statement. Dawson was confused, but at least he didn’t feel like he was under fire any longer. His face got most of its colour back and he could finally breathe normally.

Now that he could think, he remembered he had read about some strange power sources while researching dangerous individuals online, but he had handed in all the right reports and Jacobs should have been aware of those.

“I did file a few reports…”

“I’m not talking about those,” replied Jacobs, interrupting him rather harshly. “There’s been a series of strange energy sources cropping up all over the world.

Dawson nodded, but remained silent. Jacobs continued.

“These power sources have been determined as potentially dangerous and could even be turned into weapons in the wrong hands.”

“My god,” was Dawson’s subdued exclamation.

There was a faint smile on the faces of the other men, which Dawson and Jacobs failed to notice.

“Like I said, they’ve been cropping up everywhere and we believe it is a plot to take down western civilisation.”

Dawson didn’t have to say anything, his open mouth and look of befuddlement spoke volumes.

“These two gentlemen have just come over from to tell us this. They’ve been investigating these cases in a joint operation between the FBI and the CIA and a new agency has been formed. But there have been so many of these cases that they feel swamped and have asked us for help.”

Jacobs swallowed and went on. It was noticeable he was struggling to get all of the information out.

“As you know, our organisation is part of the efforts to cut down on crime and terrorism. They asked me if we would be able to help them out. I told them we have one very reliable and trustworthy person. You were the person I thought of, Dawson.”

Dawson’s mind was buzzing, first with the excitement of an impending assignment, then with Jacobs’ praise and also with the danger of the strange energy source.

“I’m honoured you thought of me, Mr. Jacobs. How can I help?”

Although the question was addressed to Jacobs, one of the other men answered. This time it was the white man with short brown hair and the same suit and tie as his colleague. Dawson just noticed at that minute they were wearing matching suits and had black sunglasses on. “Mr. Dawson, we’ve been sending men all over the globe to deal with this…” he paused. “…situation. We would like you to go to a small country called Slovenia. We’ve picked up an energy source from there.”

Dawson’s mind wandered.

Slovenia? Hmm, one of those communist countries, I reckon.

The man carried on.

“We have the full support of the local government and police and also the Interpol to investigate these matters. We would like you to lead the mission”

Dawson’s heart rejoiced. He would have all the power and help he needed.

“You would be going with a group of three to investigate.”

The man stopped talking and Dawson realised they were all staring at him, waiting for his reply. There was no way he could turn this down.

“I will be glad to help in any way I can.”

“Excellent,” said the agent. “Like I said, you’ll have full support, both with you and back stateside. First of all, we would like you to come to our headquarters, so we can brief you fully.”

“Sure,” Dawson practically sang. “If that’s okay with Mr. Jacobs?”

Jacobs’ face revealed only a hint of sensible fear of the two men.

“Dawson,” he said. “This is of paramount importance. All your other tasks can wait. Take as much time as you need. Your leave will be fully financially compensated and your job will be waiting for you when you get back. I mean…”

He seemed to hesitate and glanced nervously towards the two agents, as if looking for approval.

“What?” asked Dawson.

“When you get back,” Jacobs continued. “I’m sure we’ll be able to find you something better for you.”

That’s all Dawson needed to hear. Soon he was packing his briefcase and any other essential he felt he might need. There wasn’t much really, as his desk was pretty bare.

The agents then rushed him through the corridors into the parking facility underneath the building. The two men beckoned him into a black SUV with tinted windows and what looked like reinforced glass (probably bulletproof).

He took a look around, thinking only for a second if he was doing the right thing, then stepped into the massive vehicle and his new life.

The sky is the limit!

He was right. Nothing would ever be the same.
