Flight of Fancy
Chapter 18

Steven Keffler was spending some time alone. He needed time to think. His office was extremely quiet, even the usual classical music background had been switched off. He didn’t particularly like classical music. It just seemed like the right thing to listen to, especially if anyone came for a meeting. It was impressive. He didn’t really care for any music, hated the droning of modern pop and didn’t have the patience for anything else. The quiet, however, was also weighing down on him. This wasn’t something usual for him. There was never a need to think this much. He was a man of action.

The whole thing about the energy sources was extremely strange. None of the investigations were getting anywhere and it all just went blank.

How can an energy source just disappear?

He had a few guesses, but none of them could be explained to the people in charge. Many people believed there was nobody above him, as even the president had to take his advice, but there were those who were in charge of even him. While he had never met them, he dealt with their emissaries and could feel the limitless power of these ancient families.

They will not tolerate failure!

His superiors knew what was going on and were pushing him hard to find some answers. It had been several weeks since all this started and he wanted to do it on the straight and narrow. That was the usual plan of action and if things didn’t go according to plan or the chess pieces couldn’t be moved around efficiently enough, something had to be orchestrated.

The time has come!

There was actually no time to lose. Something devious could be in motion and if they didn’t prevent it, there could be a switch of power, a rebellion or something completely unexpected. He wouldn’t worry about that yet, he had his “worst-case scenario” people for that. Now was the time to act and implement a course of events that would restore the natural order, where the people would respect authority and would be submissive and compliant.

What’s so wrong with that?

People were given all the options. If you had a job, you could go out and spend money on all the entertainment you could. The people that couldn’t afford it, were allowed to download it. People simply didn’t know how to be happy. Somebody had to stir the pot and make trouble, trying to convince others of equality and personal happiness for all.

Bullshit!

This was the way it was supposed to be. Humans needed to breathe, consume and reproduce. Everything else was a bonus they should be grateful for. And they were the ones providing for their bonuses and extras.

Stupid parasites!

Time was ticking away and something had to be done. Keffler knew exactly who he had to call. He picked up the phone and dialled a number.

There was a murmur on the other side.

“Set plan C in motion,” said Keffler.

There was another inaudible murmur.

“For all the sites,” was Keffler’s reply.

Keffler hung up, sat back in his luxurious and expensive chair and breathed a sigh of relief.

It is done!

There was nothing else to do now but wait. He had set the plan in motion and it was up to other people to finish it. He was confident of their success, as in 99 percent of cases they didn’t fail him.

He could finally focus on other tasks and tell his superiors that it was being taken care of. S~ᴇaʀᴄh the (ꜰind)ɴʘvel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.
