Chapter Fifty-Three – The Coronation Ball

We have invited two hundred guests for my coronation dinner and ball. It feels like every one of them wants to congratulate me and ask about what happened at the ceremony. They are in awe that the moon goddess has giving me her blessing.

I had been worried that my subjects wouldn’t accept me as their queen, and that I wouldn’t be able to earn our allies respect, but these fears are gone now. I can see the pride on the faces of members of the royal pack, they tell me how privileged they feel to have witnessed the sign of the moon goddess’ favour. Each of the Alpha’s who are allied to us, have approached me to pledge their continued loyalty to me as queen.

It has been an exhilarating, but tiring day. Alex has stayed close to me, and I have drawn strength from his support, his presence had helped prevent the events of the day completely overwhelming me.

Things have started to calm down by midnight, and I am pleased that I can now spend some time talking to the Royal Betas.

“Congratulations your majesty” Philip said to me with a big smile. “I am privileged to have watched your coronation, to have witnessed the moon goddess bestow her approval upon you. In the short time that I have known you I have come to realise that it is fully deserved.”

The other betas nod in agreement.

“Yes, your majesty this has been an auspicious day” Lauren tells me.

All except Hannah, she is unusually quiet, and I wonder if she is regretting what she said at dinner. She dislikes having to share her territories wealth with the others, and I know she means to oppose my plans to improve conditions in the other territories. As a new queen, still growing into the role she might have been able to ignore or water down my plans, but she won’t be able to now, that the moon goddess has marked me with her favour.

“Your highness. It is time to close the ball and say goodbye to your guests” Aaron says. I hadn’t noticed him approach, I had been too caught up with my conversation with the Betas.

“Of course, Thank you. I turn to the betas and say, “please excuse me”

I follow Aaron to the front of the room. A trumpeter sounds a single note, and everyone stops talking. The few wolves who were still dancing stop and turn to look at me.

“Thank you for coming here today and for witnessing my coronation as queen. It has been an important and special day for me, and I hope for you too. I expect that in the future there will be many more opportunities for us to spend time together. Goodnight.”

Finally, the day is over, and I can retire to my bedroom and sleep. Alex holds my arm as we walk up the stairs to our rooms.

“I have to go and check in on the guards, and make sure that the palace is secure before I can go to bed” he tells me.

“Do you think Lucius is going to attack now?”

“No, not really, he missed his best opportunity before the coronation. Now that we are back here, you are well guarded. It would have been better for him to have attacked before you were crowned queen, even without the moon goddesses blessing, it would have been a terrible crime to kill the rightful queen.”

“That hasn’t stopped him before” I remark.

“No, but once people know about the events at the coronation, it will become even more difficult for him, no warrior wants to risk angering the moon goddess.”

“Do you think he has missed his chance to capture or kill me.”

“Yes, I hope so” Alex kisses my forehead before walking away.

I walk into my bedroom where Martha is waiting for me. She takes off my jewellery and places it back in the boxes. She then helps me to take off my dress and make-up and get ready for bed.

“Congratulations your majesty. Everyone in the household is talking about the coronation” she tells me excitedly. “They are delighted that you received such a clear sign of the moon goddess’ favour, and it won’t be long before the whole kingdom knows how blessed we are in our queen.”

“Thank you” I am too tired to say anything else. She doesn’t seem to notice as she chatters on excitedly about the coronation and the ball tonight.

She finally finishes and leaves me alone. I drop into bed, and fall asleep immediately, too tired to do anything else.
