The skies were dark, filled with pitch-black smoke rising from the burning rubble. A girl was running on the rooftops. She sprinted at full speed, pushing her body to its limits.

Sweat went down her forehead onto her cheeks. She lifted her hand and wiped it all off. She looked around frantically, looking for a way out.

Inside, she curses herself for her carelessness. If only she hadn’t dropped her compass, the key to her escape, she wouldn’t have been struggling as much.

Head down south, she only knew that much. Unfortunately for her, the skies were so dark to the point the sun was no longer visible.

Out of breath, she stopped. She tried to calm down. She shook her head, trying to get all her wild thoughts under control. She took one more look around her.

She fell silent and used all of her senses to decide where to go.

However, the input she received wasn’t the one she necessarily wanted. She jumped to her left, barely dodging the arrow that is now stuck on the roof. While cursing her own sloppiness, she picked up the arrow. S~ᴇaʀᴄh the FindNʘᴠᴇl.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

She looked at where the arrow came from and ran opposite to it. Jumping from roof to roof, she skillfully transversed the uneven terrain.

Explosions could be heard going off all around her, rubble flying high into the sky causing thick layers of dust. She waved her hand in front of her, trying desperately to push away any debris that fell upon her.

A carriage wheel, that was blown into the sky just seconds earlier, flew straight at her. She skillfully dodged the wheel, sliding on her back. the wheel’s wooden surface flew 7 centimeters above her nose, far too close for comfort.

After successfully dodging the wheel, she got back on her feet and sprinted again.

All of a sudden, the sound of a crying child caught her attention. She looked toward the sound and bolted in that direction. From the rooftops she could see a human mother carrying her baby, being chased by a band of five goblins.

Wasting no time, she jumped down. Swinging her shining polearm, she thrust right through the unfortunate goblins. In less than 10 seconds, all five goblins fell victim to her wrath.

The human mother looked in fear. She knew why, her cat ears on the top of her head were the reason. She put no attention to the expression of the mother, but instead shouted at her, saying she should go.

The mother nodded and quickly left, her small crying baby cuddled in her arms. She reached into a small pocket on her clothes and pulled out a small tube.

She threw said tube on the road. The tube lit up and black smoke poured out, forming some kind of wall between her and the escaping mother. She waited a couple of seconds. As expected, a second group of pursuing goblins came by. Seven goblins, which she dispatched in roughly the same amount of time as the previous group.

After finishing the goblins off, she ran toward a building and climbed upward, once again reaching the rooftops.

From a distance, she could see where the human was heading and decided to follow her.

Deep inside, she questions why she is even running. The choices she made, and the reasons behind said choices. She was going against everything she had been taught so far. She had no reason to run, no reason to live.

Her life doesn’t mean anything, so she can’t fathom why she was running. What she knew was that being caught would mean death, and there was no way around it.

In her mind, an object forms. A red curved blade, attached to a black hilt.

Fresh blood dripping from its tip.

She wanted to cry, she wanted to scream, but alas, she knew that would only result in her death. This isn’t the first time she kept her feelings locked within her, and if she somehow survived, it won’t be the last.

She heard a screeching sound high above. She had a vague idea of what that is and jumped off the rooftops. The building she once stood on exploded into a million pieces, some debris flying off to her face.

Scars appear on her white skin, and red blood drips out. She was thrown onto the road.

She struggles to stand up, her strength leaving her body. From her position, she could see what seemed like the city gates. It feels so close, yet at the same time so far. She felt a lingering regret over her, but alas she couldn’t do anything.

It’s over, she thought to herself. She closed her eyes, bracing for whatever comes next.
