Gatekeepers EXTRA 2: Key Terms

Magicka- More commonly known as magic, this is a power that many creatures possess. Some races are born with this power, while others lack it or can obtain it after training. Sᴇaʀch Thᴇ Find ɴøᴠel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Magical Attribute- Every creature capable of magic has a predetermined attribute for their magic. There are six major elemental attributes: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Light, and Dark. These six attributes combine with each other to form countless lesser attributes (examples are wind and water creating ice, or light and fire creating lightning). A creature’s attribute is determined by their parents’ attribute; they either take after one parent’s attribute or some combination of both. In rare cases, some creatures are born with two different magical attributes.

Half-breeds- Half-breeds are born from parents belonging to two different races, even different species in a dragon's case. They are known as an omen of bad luck due to their tendency to die without warning around the age of three. These deaths are a result of the two magical attributes inherited from their parents refusing to merge together inside the half-breed's body, tearing the newborn's body apart from the inside.

Magic System- While magic isn’t a physical form of energy, the system in which it flows throughout the body overlaps that of the bloodstream systems. The larger the system, the more magic a being generally has. Therefore, it is a general rule of thumb that the larger a creature is, the more magic it should have.

Magic Purity- In addition to how large one’s Magic System is, the concentration of their magic is another factor used to determine how much magic one can possess. Each individual creature has a different level of concentrated magic within their magic system. The purity of one’s magic never changes; it stays the same from the moment they are either born or awaken their magic. Magic Purity is somewhat influenced by a being’s heritage/biology; different races have different average purity levels. In cases where someone has a higher amount of magic than what their magic systems generally would allow, the cause is their magic purity.

Ley Lines- Lines of natural magic that run over the surface of the world. Ley Lines provide natural magic to the entire world. If the Ley Lines of a world die out, that world is doomed to perish. New worlds constantly have new ley lines cropping up over their surfaces and are overflowing with magic.

Ley Gates- A gateway that is created at random when at least two or more ley lines intersect with one another. Ley Gates constantly pour natural magic out into their surroundings. In these cases, the magic pouring out of the gate has a great impact on the surrounds, causing unnatural phenomena to occur in the area. After a Ley Gate has been claimed and put under control, it allows people to warp to its location from other Ley Gates connected to it through the intersecting Ley Lines.

Leyscope- A magic item crafted from refined manastone shards infused with magic. It appears as nothing more than a crystal eyepiece one places over their eye when examining jewels. The quality of the Leyscope depends on the color; clear Leyscopes are the cheapest, while deep blue is the highest quality. By placing a Leyscope over one’s eye, it allows the user to see the Ley Lines in their surroundings. It is often used to predict locations where a Ley Gate could form.
