Clare’s P.O.V:

“Ahhh I can’t believe you sent Aspen off alone in the forest!” I yell at Orion who rides in front of me through the forest trees. After he had helped get that putrid stain on the earth off of me we made our way out of the valley. We were supposed to be just minutes behind them but somehow we have no idea where they are or where we are.

“I told you, she has Talon,” Orion speaks his gruff voice low and annoyed. If he hadn’t saved my life an hour ago I would smack him upside the head so quickly.

“Oh, yes, Talon! The one who can’t even be a decent bait without us all almost dying!” I yell out again sarcastically. I would normally never speak to someone like this. I was raised to respect others and especially speak properly but at this second I’m so dumbfounded that this could possibly be the team the general said was the best.

“Could you quiet down..... like completely,” Orion comments snidely and I glare at the back of his head. Oh, I would leave his butt if I had any idea of where we needed to go.

“Oh, Okay! I’ll shut up when you know what it’s like to lose the most important person in existence.” I speak up with venom upset as I roll my eyes. I mean I understand that she needed to get to safety but seriously? Aspen is the only one of her kind. If I don’t get to her, who knows what will happen if she doesn’t have her medication? That’s even if she’s still alive.

“You seem to forget that I did, and my team is completely separated.” He states and I bite my lip trying to keep calm. He’s right in that manner. I lost one person but Orion has no idea where any of his team members are.

“Oh, the director is going to kill me,” I speak up more to myself than to Orion as I look around the forest.

“I don’t get it,” Orion speaks up a minute later and I look at him confused.

“What do you mean?” I ask ducking under a low branch.

“It’s as if you have no regard that five people, actual humans are missing without backup in this place. All you can think about is getting into a little trouble with your precious director.” I scowl at the back of his head. How dare he? I care, but I have a mission. If this mission goes well I’ll finally show my father and the director that I’m worth it. This is how I can show I’m worth my last name. Even then I know they are humans, I get that they are lost. But that doesn’t matter, my objective is Aspen.

“I know that, but I have my mission. If it means every one of us dying then I don’t care. It’s about Aspen and what she can do. No one else’s feelings matter, not me, and not you.” I say firmly and purposely. Those are the same words I’ve been reciting to myself every day for the last year.

“That’s apparent with the fact your dragging her out here like some caged pet.” He says handed. Turning past some clumped trees. This man infuriates me so much. He doesn’t know half of what Aspen holds in her body if he did then he wouldn’t care as much about her feelings either.

“Aspen came knowing exactly what it means. She is simply playing her part just as I am.” I say rolling my eyes. As I grow quiet and listen to the surrounding forest. My mind can’t help but focus on my mistake. I let her get separated, maybe if I can find her the director won’t be too angry.

Enyo P.O.V:

I slice down hard cutting the throat of another forsaken as we trample through the forest evading the forsaken chasing after us. I pull hard o my horse’s reins as I pull her to the right, dodging a large oak tree. Foxglove and Harrison ride farther ahead of me as we try our best to get rid of the last couple forsaken behind us. We’re lucky it’s harder for them to attack in the forest.

I look behind me to see that the last three of the forsaken have been lost behind us in the foreign forest. I whistle out loudly letting the other two know were clear. I catch up to their horses now slowed down to a jog as they pass trees and duck under branches. I ride to the left side of Foxglove her whole body covered in black blood. Harrison is on her right, looking just as bloody and disheveled as the rest of us. The three of us were the last to get out of the bloody mess in the valley. After foxglove and Harrison were able to get back to their horses we booked it, noticing the group of forsaken appearing behind us.

“Did you see where the others went?” Foxglove asks looking between Harrison and me. In truth, I couldn’t be sure where any of them are or if they are still alive.

“The last I saw of them was Orion and Clare taking off,” Harrison speaks up. I look over to see a bloody handprint smeared over his cheek. When we get to the waterfall everyone needs to get cleaned off. Foxglove looks over at Harrison sharply concern was written on her face.

“Talon and Aspen?” She asks. I’m concerned for all my teammates, their lives are in my hands and I failed to plan properly for this incident. A pang of guilt grows in my stomach, I’ve led other teammates to their death but the thought that Aspen could be dead bothers me more than anything. It’s like a nagging twitch in the back of my mind. It has to be because she’s the mission.

I’m worried about Aspen so much because she is on a mission, it’s important to keep her safe, that’s why my mind can’t help but think about her right now, right?

“I ordered Orion and Talon to get her and Clare to the waterfall. I would guess Clare and Orion couldn’t get away so Talon took Aspen alone.” I try to think out loud. Talon’s a very capable man. He’s a jokester most of the time but in the clutch, I trust that he will take care of her. Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the Find ɴøᴠel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“I don’t like this,” Harrison speaks up looking over at us.

“I don’t either, but everyone on this team is capable of getting to our rendezvous point.” I try my best to sound firm. The team knows where the approximate area the waterfall is in, and their each trained to find their way. If they die, it’s not their fault but mine. I failed to plan and now my team is broken up and our main order to protect Aspen is in the hands of Talon.

“Just keep moving. We will handle whatever happens.” I say straightforwardly. I have to keep all our minds on our objective.
