“If my family is out there,” she said slowly. “I’ll find you.”

She heard birds for the first time in a while. The world sounded better. Quieter, yet louder.

“This is our punishment, I suppose. We can’t cheat the planet. Or death. But our time is over,” Loni said into the radio.

The silence over the radio changed to static, “This is Outpost 67; are there more survivors with you? Send us your location and we’ll come get you. Over.”

Loni sobbed in relief. It was Michael’s voice.
