Chapter 2 

“I’m serious.” I sat straight and looked into Frederic’s oppressive eyes bravely. “It’s been five years. You won’t love me. Maybe we should end our unhappy marriage.“; 

In a month, there would be a big business forum in Aroma City. By then, Frederic would meet Emilia, who worked there as a waitress. He would fall in love with her at first sight and do everything to get her. 

Their love story would be exciting and romantic, but I didn’t want to be a sad part of it.

I decided to leave Frederic before he and Emilia met. I quit before their complicated love story started. 

I must look really serious. Frederic suddenly became unhappy. He was never good–tempered and would show no mercy to anyone who annoyed him. 

“Who do you think I am? Your toy?” Frederic raised a smile, but his eyes were cold. “Five years ago, you insisted on marrying me. And now, you want a divorce. Sylvia, are you fooling me?” 

Five years ago, my family and the Hudson family were on good terms. Our parents contributed to this marriage. 

Of course, Frederic wasn’t willing. But his grandfather was seriously ill back then and made him marry me 

It was insulting to Frederic. Luckily, Frederic wasn’t in love with 

anyone. And he was taking over the family business and needed a helpful wife. That was how Frederic and I managed through the last five years. 

I forced a smile and said bitterly, “Do you want to continue this fake marriage with me?” 

“Fake?” Frederic slowly and then raised his eyebrows, sneering, “So, you feel lonely now.” 

“No. I’m saying that…” I tried to explain it to him. 

But Frederic stood up and came over to me. He bent down and put his hands on the sofa. I was stuck between the sofa and his embrace. Frederic said in an alluring voice, “Why don’t you just tell me that you are lonely? We don’t need a divorce. I can satisfy you.” 

Frederic liked smoking, so he smelt like cigarettes with a faint scent. 

He never hugged me. I knew that smell because I had secretly smelt his 

coat. 

Now, I was surrounded by that complex and fascinating smell. I was supposed to flush and be excited. But the truth was that I only felt repressed. 

I was going to leave Frederic. I couldn’t be swayed. 

“That’s not what I want!” I explained After all those years, I had already been used to loneliness. 

“Really?” Frederic stood up. He wasn’t interested in me. The intimacy just now was supposed to embarrass me. So, Frederic wouldn’t go out of control. 

He would not be attracted to a 27–year–old married spinster like me. 

“Sylvia, I know it’s our fifth anniversary today. But I’m not interested in things like this. If that’s why you want a divorce, you’d better give up.” Frederic stood in front of me and looked down at me. His voice was cold again. 

“We have never celebrated our anniversaries before, and I don’t expect any celebration this year,” I also stood up and looked up at Frederic. “Think about my suggestion. You don’t need me now. You want freedom more than I do, don’t you?” 

After saying that, I walked upstairs and went to the bedroom without looking back or saying anything more. 

Downstairs, Frederic slammed the door. Then, I heard his car vrooming out of the window. Frederic left, but I felt nothing this time. 

Then, my phone rang. Greta Berger, a good friend of mine, called. 

“Syl, let’s go to Glitter Club for fun!” Greta said loudly, and it dispelled my depression. Greta was about my age. She was always single. 

After getting married, I seldom went out for fun and turned Greta down a lot of times. However, Greta never gave up. 

“Okay!” I agreed without hesitation, which made Greta silent for a long while. 

“Today is your wedding anniversary. Are you sure that you are going out?” Greta spoke in shock and disbelief. 

On the last four anniversaries, I turned Greta down with the same 

excuse. 

“Yes. It’s just an anniversary, not a big deal. I’ll be right there,” I answered Greta firmly and then hung up the phone. 

I opened my closet. Most of my clothes were black, white, and gray. I 

couldn’t even see much blue. Luxury brands had all kinds of amazing designs. But I was a fool who spent a lot of money on the dullest ones. 

After ten minutes, I finally found a black halter dress that wasn’t very boring. It was a V–neck silk dress. People could almost see my belly button. The elastic at the waist gave a nice snug fit. My fair–skinned arms and back were exposed. 

I remembered this dress. I wanted to wear it to seduce Frederic, but he didn’t come home for a month. 

The only disappointing thing was my flat chest. I could have looked more gorgeous in this dress. 

But it was okay. I told myself inwardly, “Eat more, and it will be better.” 

I changed my clothes and put on makeup. I went to the garage and drove a red Porsche directly to Glitter Club. 

Glitter Club was a nightclub in Aroma City. Its name was both elegant 

and wild. 

After parking the car, I went in and found my friends at the bar, where we agreed to meet. 

In college, Greta, Cecelia Gideon, Janessa Chilton, and I were known for our talent in the Music Department. Everybody thought we would make a difference after graduation. But I got married so early, Greta lived her life in clubs, and Cecelia was a deputy manager in her family’s company. Only Janessa was still in the music industry. She participated in competitions and was determined to be a star. 

“You actually came. What a surprise!” Greta jumped from the high chair, held my hands, and said excitedly as if it was a big meeting. 

Cecelia and Janessa nodded in agreement because I barely showed up 

after getting married. 

I gave up my own life for Frederic. 

After a few drinks, Cecelia sighed, “Syl, if you refused us again this time, I would feel like you died five years ago.” 

Well, my marriage did kill me in a way. 

“That’s odd. You are supposed to be preparing a romantic dinner at home now,” Greta said curiously. She made me open my eyes wide. “Did Frederic ignore you again? Did that jerk make you cry?” 

“Watch my false eyelashes!” I got rid of Greta’s hands.
