Part 11

Steven’s descent into madness was swift and chaotic. He began by louldy denying the truth, then erupted into a frenzy at the police station, hurling documents to the ground and pushing away anyone who dared approach him. Xander had no choice but to intervene, subduing Steven until he lost consciousness.

When Steven regained awareness in the hospital, the sedatives seemed to have mellowed his demeanor, but his mind was still clouded. Grabbing Xander’s hand beside the hospital bed, Steven blurted out, “Hey, where’s my wife? Why hasn’t she swung by with some food?”

Xander scratched his head, clueless about how to respond. “Uh, your wife? She’s probably got stuff on her plate today……..”

Steven’s face lit up with a smile. “Busy? Come on, she’s always buzzing around me. Bet she’s just about to hit the road. I’ll send her a text to hurry up.”

Despite Xander’s attempts to intervene, Steven was undeterred.

As he unlocked his phone, his gaze fell upon a voice message from a few days prior. Without a second thought, he played it, only to hear my muffled cries from the day of my abduction.

The grin disappeared from Steven’s face faster than a rabbit in a magician’s hat and he snapped back to reality.

“I, I… she, she….”

Xander, quick on the uptake, swiped the phone from Steven’s shaky grip.

Wide–eyed and frozen, Steven struggled to find his voice, tears cascading down his cheeks like a waterfall.

Xander wasted no time, summoning doctors and nurses, but Steven bolted upright, barricading himself from their reach.

“Just let me die! Let me die!

“I’ve killed my wife, I’ve killed Sabrina. She loved me so much and I just misunderstood her all this time!

“And our kids, two kids!

“I’m a monster, not even human. I’m a beast, lower than dirt, I’m…”

I stood silently beside his bed, watching his descent into despair, his tears mingling with his regrets.

Eventually, the medical staff managed to subdue him and administered a sedative.

As he lay there, looking fragile, I felt no hint of sadness; my heart had been pulled out of my body, leaving nothing but emptiness.

Turning to Xander, Steven muttered, “You can’t stop me… I’m going to join my wife… I need to apologize to her…”
