Heart of Ra
Chapter 1

The cab driver shook her from her slumber and pointed out the windshield of the car. He had volunteered to bring her all the way to the middle of the desert and sure enough there was the expedition team running around on what appeared to a hill before disappearing only to be replaced with new people. She paid the driver and stepped out into the sun as she placed her sunglasses on. The desert heat was one thing no one messed with. As the driver left she looked around and seen the pyramids to the far left of her and nothing but sand to far right of her. To say that she was excited was an understatement, in fact she didn't really want to be here. She wanted to be back home and resting for the next day at the museum but instead, she answered the phone to hear her father talk really fast and he even sounded ecstatic about whatever it is he found and he demanded she come right away. Groaning, she headed over the excavation sight only to stop at the top of the hill with raised brows.

There was a whole temple, if that is what you would call it, half way dug up with people running around all over the place. At this point she didn't know if she should be happy about the find or be worried. Looking around, she found her father's tent and headed towards it, it wasn't hard to miss with having her mother's name on it with some of her mother's favorite flowers as well. She shook her head and entered the tent only to look around to see it empty. She sighed.

“Of course he isn't in here.” She whispered to herself just as the flap of the tent opened up and revealed a man who arched a brow at her as he kept his sunglasses on. Dressed in cargo pants and a white T-shirt that hugged his well built body, there was a sense of danger just oozing around him.

“Can I help you?” The tone was light but she didn't miss the caution behind it.

“I'm looking for my father, Jack and my brother Len.” she could feel him looking her over and felt his eyes linger on her chest and legs. She felt a like he was undressing her.

“How do I know you aren't lying about that?” Was he serious? She opened her mouth only for a voice to interrupt.

“Hey Ramses, did you manage to find…” His sentence trailed off as he came into the tent and stared at her. She stared back through her sunglasses and wanted to laugh at the shocked look on her brothers face.

He stood there and looked between the two, wondering if he was gonna kick her out.

“Well, looks like the ground didn't swallow my baby sister after all.” Then again maybe not. Glancing at the two, it seemed they didn't like each other but from the way he had talked about her in the past few days, Ramses was pretty sure this was natural.

“Len, you should really get that stick out your ass before you start shitting wood chips for a week.” He had to admit, she was witty. He had heard about her but he always assumed she was this little innocent girl who lived at home with her mom. Len stepped forward and picked her up spinning with a shit eating grin and she laughed before he set her back down.

“So glad you finally made it Cleo. Dad wouldn't shut up for the last few days about you coming.” He swore she was rolling her eyes behind her shades.

“Speaking of which, where is he? He wouldn't tell what was so important that I needed to fly all the way here.” So the old man was the reason why she was here. Well that figured.

“He's in the temples. Come on. Oh, this is Ramses. Ramses, this is my sister Cleo.” He didn't need the introduction but it was best to play the game. Especially if he wanted to keep a low profile. They walked out and as she walked by she glanced at him.

“You're an asshat.” He blinked a few times at her comment before chuckling as he followed them. She was definitely something else.

Ramses didn't say a whole lot as he followed the two along the temple ruins. He watched her take off her shades and looked around. He expected her to be in awe but honestly, she didn't even look surprised. It made him wonder if she was even sane. A worker came up to him and started chatting about the hole that was dug.

“We won't be able to get through unless we blow it.” That was a stupid idea.

“That is a bad idea.” He raised a brow at her as she took the words out of his mouth.

“How do you know? You haven't seen the prints I dug up.” The worker seemed a offended. She looked at them with bright blue eyes and sighed.

“I don't need blueprints or anything else to rely on common sense. Look around, if you blow up that one wall, you will kill everyone in here. Everything has a weakness and you just happened to choose the one for this place.” He was surprised. He didn't think she would know so much about all this. Hell, she was right and he was here when the temple was built. Sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ Find ɴøᴠel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“That is the truth, my daughter wouldn't lie.” They all turned around as Len helped an old man up the small hill with a grin on his face. Cleo walked over and embraced her father with a smile on her face. The worker sighed, nodding and walked away. Poor sap, he just needed to be more knowledgeable then again most humans weren't.

“Well then, shall we give you the tour?” The old man smiled.

It was great seeing her dad again and so lively. She was glad that he had decided to do something productive to keep his mind occupied since her mother died. What made it even better was the fact that her brother went with him and became his second hand. Being an expeditionist wasn't something she had wanted to become but it was something they did as a family before her mother died. Unfortunately, after everything, she had stepped away from it all and started working as a museum director. But now, getting the grand tour of the temple that was hidden away for so long she felt like it was old times again. Cleo couldn't help but smile at the way her dad's face lit up every time he talked about how far they had gotten and what new things they found out. Glancing behind her, she noticed Ramses stilled followed and was wondering what his deal was and how he managed to get into this sort of thing. He must of felt her stare because he looked at her and raised a brow. She shook her head and sighed inwardly, what was the deal with the sunglasses? They were indoors for crying out loud. It was time to get to the point.

“Daddy, what exactly was so important that I had to fly out here?” She looked at her dad as Ramses was pulled away by another worker. Her dad's eyes sparkled.

“I found it, Cleo. I didn't think I would but I actually found it.”

“Found what?” She was so confused and never once had she seen her dad literally this excited as if he won the lottery. Before she could get an answer another worker came over and whispered something in his ear. He nodded before glancing over at Ramses.

“Ramses! You're in charge of my daughter! Take good care of her!” He yelled. Her jaw dropped. Before she pinched the bridge of her nose.

“Daddy, I don't need-”

“I have to go lil star.” He kissed her on the forehead, “we'll celebrate later tonight. You're hotel is already booked and Ramses will take care of you. I'll see you later.” He gave her a small hug before walking away. She groaned and gave a small glance at the man who was looking back at her. She wished the ground would just swallow her whole.
