Chapter 361

Glynnis felt like she was dealing with a madwoman who had made such bold claims.

After all, Thaddeus was the CEO of the Abernathy Group, a power player whose influence was far–reaching. Even Frederic didn’t daunt him; what could the Fairhaven family possibly do?

However, she didn’t feel the need to point this out. She’d rather sit back, watch them make a spectacle of themselves and wall for the whole of Elmsworth to laugh at their folly.

“Sure, whatever makes you happy. Here’s to a long and blissful marriage with Thad!” Glynnis said, clutching her aching face, her congratulations grudging.

“By the way, remember when you told me about Mr. Bartley’s son? The one who was interested in you, but you didn’t feel the same and turned him down?” Edith suddenly changed the topic.

Mr. Bartley’s son? She remembered.

Her mother, Elspeth, had taken her to a golf course to meet the Bartleys. The intention was clear: to introduce her to him.‘

But the Bartleys didn’t take a liking to her and even Mrs. Bartley, the Mayor’s wife, had wanted to meet her dimwit sister instead. That was a real humiliation!

Later in order not to be debased by others, she had boasted to Edith that the Bartley family were interested in her, but she felt she could do better, so she had asked her mother to reject their proposal.

“Ah, why bring him up all of a sudden?” Glynnis asked, annoyed.

“Oh, nothing much. Just that he’s currently pursuing me,” Edith said, a triumphant laugh escaping her l*ps.

Glynnis was taken aback. She scoffed, “You’re about to become the CEO’s wife of the Abernathy Group. Surely you wouldn’t give a second thought to the son of a mere mayor, would you?”

“Of course, Thad is the only one for me. So, I turned him down. But he said he really likes me and would do anything for me. Anything!” Edith’s laughter grew wilder, a hint of malice seeping through.

“What do you mean? What are you planning?” Glynnis asked, sensing the sinister undertone.

“I want him to marry Marilla.”

Glynnis drew a sharp intake of breath. She was astounded by Edith’s audacity. What kind of a crazy demand was that for a suitor?!

The Fairhaven family had really raised a lunatic!

“You are Marilla’s sister, after all. So, there are certain things that I can’t do and will need your help. To make this marriage happen.”

Edith laughed leisurely, a hint of cunning in her voice, “My family are rich and influential. If Marilla marries into an ordinary family, my brother wouldn’t give up on her. Only if Marilla marries into a powerful family like the Bartleys, will my brother’s hopes be completely dashed, eliminating any chances of them being together.”

What a deep–seated scheme!

“I still remember how you ‘helped me last time. Almost landed me in jail, didn’t you?”

Glynnis was livid, her eyes turning red, the pain from her facial wound making her sweat, “And now you want me to help you again. Why should I?!”

“Well, I’m about to become your sister–in–law. Isn’t it important to maintain a good relationship with me?”

Edith drawled, adding, “Besides, Marilla did steal the man you love. You must be holding a grudge, right? Who else could help you get your revenge if not me?”

Glynnis was shocked to the core.

She remembered how she was brutally beaten by that wretch Jareth sent, her eyes filled with tears of anger and fists clenched tight.

Glynnis thought to herself: “Jareth, I love you so much, but you don’t even treat me like a human?!

Well, I guess I’ll just have to make you lose the most important thing in your life to make you understand my pain!”

“Just spit it out! What do you want?”

The affairs of the Abernathy family and Fairhaven family were in a complete mess.

And on the Chamber family’s side, a major disaster had struck, plunging the whole family into a gloomy abyss.

Just two nights ago, during a heavy rain, Byron met with a car accident on his way home from a gathering with friends.

The driver died on the spot, and the b*dyguard sitting in the front seat was in critical condition.

Byron, who was sitting in the back seat, escaped death, but ended up with a severe head injury and broken glass shards in his face. Worst of all, his legs were crushed, leaving him permanently disabled.

Jeff had consulted with all the top surgeons in the country, but none could help Byron walk again.

That day, the family sat in the living room, looking gloomy.

Ms. Bertha was weeping inconsolably. Not caring how genuine her tears were, she was putting on a good show, “How could this happen? The road was so even and he always passed there, how could there be an accident? Why did this happen?”

Everyone was low–spirited, except for Avery, who sat aside nonchalantly, his legs crossed, sipping his tea with grace, and said, “Walking down the same road every day doesn’t mean one won’t have an accident. These two things are not contradictory.”

Bertha wiped her tears with handkerchief, giving Avery a sinister look, “You seem to be quite pleased about Byron’s accident. Are you finally satisfied?”

“I wouldn’t say I’m pleased.”

Avery set down his tea, adjusting his gold–rimmed glasses, “I’m just emotionally stable, unlike you, who’s holding a mourning even when no one’s dead.”

Bertha was seething with anger, her eyes reddening and her b*dy trembling.

“Enough! From dawn till dusk, isn’t there ever enough arguing?! Byron is in this state, and if you can’t think of a way to help your brother, fine, but to stir up trouble?! Do you want to throw our home into more chaos?!” Jeff slammed his hand on the armrest.

Under the fierce rebuke, Bertha flinched, her tears stopped, and she glared ferociously at Avery.

Avery pondered for a moment, then slowly said, “Dad, I have an idea. It might help Byron’s condition.”

Everyone’s attention turned to him.

Jeff’s eyes lit up immediately, leaning forward, “Avery! Speak up!”

“Evadne has a dual identity. She’s a renowned surgeon. She once performed a complex craniotomy on Thaddeus. She’s known in the medical field as ‘Dr. Eve‘.”

Matthew looked up sharply, his cold gaze on Avery’s calm face, his teeth clenched.

“Why not ask her personally to treat Byron? Maybe there’s a chance.” Avery suggested sincerely.

“What?! Evadne is also a surgeon? She performed a craniotomy on Thaddeus? Is this true?!” Jeff found it hard to believe!

The girl he watched grow up was undoubtedly a true lady, but how could she possibly possess such excellent surgical skills?

If this was true, such a wonderful woman should be the daughter–in–law of the Chambers family!

“Of course, it’s true. I’m not the only one who knows about this. Evadne is just low–key and doesn’t like to show off.”

“That’s great. That’s really great!”

Finally. Jeff saw a glimmer of hope. His gaze on Avery shifted from cold to appreciative and excited, “Then tomorrow! Avery, you will come with me to Skyrim tomorrow morning to personally invite Evadne to treat Byron!”

“Okay, dad.” Avery agreed without hesitation.

“Avery, you’ve always been close to Evadne. I believe she’ll help for your sake, right?” Jeff’s tone was much softer towards his younger son.

“Doctors have a kind heart. Evadne is good–natured. Even without me, I think she would help.” Avery responded with an unassuming smile.

Jeff made a compliment to him, but the latter didn’t get complacent, rather humble instead.

Jeff nodded slowly, his satisfaction with Avery increasing.

While Matthew watched their interaction, his teeth grinding in annoyance.

After the family meeting, Avery headed to his room in a good mood.

“Wait.”

A cold voice pierced through the silence. Eyes squinted, Avery stopped, lazily turning around with a yawn.

“Matthew, what’s up? It’s late. I’m off to bed.”

“Avery, your act isn’t bad, gaining benefits and playing innocent, quite a skill.” Matthew took a few steps forward, his gaze sharp.

“Huh?” Avery tilted his head, pretending to be confused.

“Byron’s accident was your doing, wasn’t it?” Matthew didn’t mince his words.

“Huh?” Avery continued to play dumb.

“You had someone tamper with Byron’s car, but you didn’t want him dead, just crippled.”

Matthew was intelligent enough to see through Avery’s dark intentions, “Then, you offer a solution to dad, introducing the medical genius Ms. Ashbourne, earning dad’s favor while showing your capabilities of sharing dad’s burdens. Avery, even a fox would be jealous of your cunning!”

Avery adjusted his glasses with his slender fingers, lifting his chin, and suddenly burst into laughter!

This laughter echoed through the–grand, empty hallway, sending chills down Matthew’s spine.

“Matthew, how can you be the CEO of the Chambers Group? With your storytelling skills, you could have been a successful scriptwriter, rather than struggling in the business world against Cassius and Thaddeus for so many years!” Avery held his chest, laughing breathlessly.

Matthew clenched his teeth, “Avery!”

“What does his accident have to do with me? If you insist it does, then we must not be compatible, and I’m his bad luck.”

With that, Avery turned to leave.

Matthew took out his phone, tapping the screen to stop the recording.

Back in his room, Avery changed out of his suit and took a shower. Sitting on the sofa, he poured himself a glass of red wine.

Content, cheerful, satisfied

Sometimes, making someone wish they were dead was far more satisfying than actually killing them.

A knock on the door, and Harvey walked in, locking the door behind him.

“Mr. Chambers, you called for me.”

“Has everything been taken care of?” Avery sipped his wine.

“Everything is settled. The truck driver has accepted all the blame. He won’t say a word.”

“Good. Tomorrow I’m going with Jeff to Skyrim, inviting Ms. Ashbourne to treat Byron.”

“What?! Why? How does Mr. Jeff know?”

“I suggested it.”

Harvey was stunned, “Mr. Chambers, why do you want to save Byron? What if Ms. Ashbourne does save him?”

“How could she? She’s a doctor, not a miracle worker.” Avery laughed mockingly.

Byron’s legs were completely shattered by his hand. They were beyond repair.

“I suggested this, risking myself to save Byron. Jeff will remember my kindness. Even if the treatment fails, he will still be grateful.”

“You’re so wise!” Harvey suddenly was enlightened.

“And even if he’s his favorite son, so what?”

Avery stood in front of the dark window, swirling his wine, his eyes darker than the night, “How could Emeric let his precious daughter marry a cripple? In the end, I will be the only hope in Jeff’s eyes.”
