Chapter 420

Cassius felt a flutter in his heart, the intensity of the gaze making his cheeks flush,

“You are overstrained; you look pale.”

“Are you worrying about me?” Chasel asked, a soft light twinkling in his eyes.

Cassius swallowed, answering in a low voice, “Yes.”

That simple word made Chasel elated. All his grudges towards Cassius vanished in an instant

He was helpless, so weak; he was smitten with this man.

“Ive operated on Mr. Abemathy, removed the bullet in his left shoulder, and the arrow lodged in his back.”

Cassius helped Chasel up, who subtly leaned into him, “He’s lucky that the arrow wasn’t poisoned; otherwise he would’ve been done for. Even so, his condition isn’t promising. The arrow was just a centimeter away from puncturing his organs. If that happened, even Dr. Eve wouldn’t be able to save him,”

Everyone was stunned into silence. Evadne’s thin shoulder trembled slightly, feeling as if a heavy weight was crushing her chest. Tears welled up in her eyes.

She was a doctor, she was Dc Eve. She knew all too well what Chasel’s words meant. Thaddeus was on the gate of hell!

“And now? How is Thaddeus now?” Jareth asked impatiently.

“Even though we managed to remove the sharp objects and give him a blood transfusion, his organs are showing signs of failure due to severe blood loss. So now Mr. Abernathy is still in critical condition, Chasel said, being honest as a doctor

Everyone’s hearts sank, their faces gloomy. Evadne felt ice cold, as if all her blood had been drained.

In the past, Thaddeus would always understand her emotions, offer her his jacket or embrace her, always trying to give her warmth, no matter how tough she appeared to be in front of others. In the eyes of the one who deeply loved her, she was always a girl who needed to be protected.

“Can I go see him?”

After a moment, Evadne looked at Chasel with her pale face, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

“Right now, he’s going to enter the ICU, wait until he’s out of danger, Chasel said softly.

Evadne nodded, her voice choked, “Okay, fll wait”

Chasel wasn’t exactly a sentimental man, but seeing Evadne so heartbroken, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of distress.

After receiving a blood transfusion, Darcy was taken to a regular ward to rest.

“Are you okay, honey? If you’re uncomfortable, you must tell me. Don’t push yourself.”

Debby stayed by her husband’s side, who looked ghastly, as if he’d turn few years older in a night, She felt a throe of heartbreak, “Back then when you had acute appendicitis, you still push yourself to make lectures at school for students. Upon getting off the stage, you passed out in severe pain, and after you were taken to the hospital and undergone the operation, the doctor said any moments of late arrival, you’d be in danger. You aren’t taking good care of yourself, which always worry me a lot.”

“As long as you’re taking care of me, that’s enough,” Darcy gently pinched his wife’s cheek, his eyes filled with tenderness.

“I’m serious!” Debby playfully poked his waist with her finger.

*Actually, I just feel light–headed and not having much strength right now. Other than that, there’s no more.” Darcy let off a brush–off smile, I asked the secretary to prepare some soup for me, also for you.”

“If you want to take aliment, might as well try lamb or fish, Darcy. Just eating soup isn’t enough.” Evadne walked in and uttered half–jokingly. “Maybe you can prepare some soup when Debby delivers the baby”

“Evadne, what are you saying, we haven’t planned that yet,” Debby blushed, her l*ps pressed tight.

“Evadne is right. Our careers are stable now, and the election is over. Debby, we should add a cute new member to our family”

Darcy held his wife’s hand, caressing her delicate fingers, I know you’ve always loved kids, and you’ve held off for my sake. Over these years, you’ve been through a lot with me. I’m so guilty and sorry. From now on, it’s all good times.”

“Darcy, what are you saying?” Debby leaned in closer to her husband, running her fingers across his handsome face, her smile as sweet as a young girl’s. “Following you unflinchingly was my choice. You don’t owe me anything; on the contrary, you’ve given me too much.”

Darcy was moved, sitting up and pulling Debby closer into a k*ss, not caring if there was someone near them.

Debby was shy at first, especially with Evadne still in the room, but soon she got lost in the passion of their k*ss.

Evadne turned away, leaning against the wall in the shadows tearfully, happy for her sister’s happiness.

Although originally Emeric disapproved of the couple for their age difference, and the fact of Debby’s moving far away to Helgen concerned Evadne, every time she saw them together, she could feel their intense affection toward each other.

After making out for a while, Debby pulled away shyly. Darcy, however, was at ease, holding his wife and talking to Evodne

“Evadne, don’t worry, I spoke with the King of Country T last night, he has assigned the new Chief of Police to arrest Eden. Once Eden is captured and interrogated, we will find out who wanted to hurt Mr. Abernathy and Cassius”

Although Cassius was Darcy’s brother–in–law, the latter was nearly a decade older than Cassius. Despite Darcy now being a head of state, he remained humble and affable in front of his wife’s family.

“Thank you, Darcy, Evadne stuttered out gratefully, and thanks for giving Thaddeus a blood transfusion. Thank you so much.”

“No sweat, Evadne. If I can’t even do this much, what kind of a brother–in–law would I be? Darcy looked slightly embarrassed.

Just then, his cell phone rang. Seeing that it was a call from the King himself, he hurriedly picked it up.

As the conversation went on, Evadne noticed Darcy’s expression growing serious, and her heart clenched in anxiety. After the call, Debby quickly asked, “Darcy, is anything wrong?”

“Eden isn’t in Country T. He’s out of the country,” Darcy’s gaze solemn.

“Out of the country? Did someone from home tip him off, causing him to flee in the middle of the night?” Evidne’s brows were tightly knitted.

“No, he’s been in your country for a while now. He wasn’t in Country T when this incident occurred.”

“Where is he?!”

“Elmsworth”

Evadne’s pupils contracted, her fists clenched. She recalled what Cassius had told her, that Thaddeus was s was colluding with the enemy. And he was almost certain he knew who it was!

Bure someone in Elmsworth

Why was he so sure?

There was only one possibility: he knew this

person a

and understood him well enough.

“Evadne.” Debby hesitated slightly, then said in a low voice, The situation was a bit chaotic yesterday, and I didn’t have time to talk to you about this. Now, in front of Darcy, I want to ask you something. What’s your relationship with that Mr. Chambers from the Chambers family? Are you still close?”

“My relationship with Avery isn’t what you think. I just consider him a friend.” Evadine’s eyes unreadable, “When w

we were kids, we spent a lot of time together. It was a childhood friendship. Later, he and his mom moved to Helgen for over a decade. We reconnected by chance when he returned. Over the past year he’s helped me a lot. He’s even saved my life twice,”

“I don’t deny that he might genuinely care about you and like you. But Evadne, you should limit your contact with him. After you return home, try to distance yourself from him if possible.” Debby advised, her tone serious, “And I believe the most important man in your heart is still Mr. Abernathy. After going through this ordeal, I’m sure your feelings for each other are stronger. You would gradually let go of your resentment and think about starting anew with him, right? Mr. Abernathy has sacrificed so much for you. Even if you can’t accept him, you shouldn’t get close to Mr. Chambers. He’s not even in the same league as Thaddeus.”

“Mr. Chambers from the Chambers family? Which one?” Darcy asked, curious.

“Mr. Avery Chambers.

Hearing this name, Darcy’s usually gentle face hardened, and he said coldly, “Ah, so he’s with the Chambers Group. He’s an ‘old friend, you might say”

The last words were filled with bitterness, spat out through gritted teeth.

“Darcy, you know Avery? Are you close to him? Did you guys have any conflicts when he was in Helgen?” Evadne asked, wide–eyed.

Darcy sighed and shook his head in embitterment, “Avery was known as the King of the Night, the Underground Boss‘ in Helgen. He controlled a well–known capital group there, golluding with high–ranking officials and even involved in the underworld. He ran underground casinos, bribed officials, and even had a hand in drug–related activities! But we couldn’t find concrete evidence against him. He always managed to stay behind the scenes, and we could never punish him!”

Evadne was taken aback! It was hard to imagine that the Avery Darcy was describing was the same man who had been so gentle and caring towards her  sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ Find ɴøᴠel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

They were like two extremes, an angel and a demon

“Not only that, Avery even manipulated the presidential election in Helgen.”

Debby still shivered at the memory, tightly clasping her husband’s hand, “He even targeted Darcy, launching media attacks against him. Thankfully, Darcy has always been clean and never associated with those people, so they could never find any dirt on him. Otherwise, it wouldn’t just be a matter of whether he could become president. He might have been sent to prison.”

Evadne gasped, feeling a chill run down her spine, “When did he become so terrifying? How did he change like this?”

“The social environment in Helgen is complicated. Avery isn’t a native. He had to resort to certain means to make a name for himself there. After all, the original accumulation of capital is always brutal, but even brutality has its limits. Otherwise, what’s the difference between us and predatory animals?!” Darcy said, still furious at the thought of his past encounters with Avery,

Evadne’s face turned pale, and she stumbled back half a step.

How cunning must the present Avery be to hide all this darkness behind his gentle smile, without a hint of suspicion?

“That’s why, Evadne, when your brother said that someone in our country was in contact with the military in Country T, my first thought was Avery

Debby looked at her with a serious expression, “But this is all speculation. We have no solid evidence. However, it won’t hurt to be extra careful around this man. Evadne, I know you value loyalty and friendship. It must be hard for you to accept all this. But setting aside personal feelings, Darcy and I just want you to stay away from dangerous people and stay safe.”

“I do value friendship, but only to friends that adhere to justice.”

Evądne looked down, her eyes cold and determined when she raised her head again, “Perhaps he had a hard time in a foreign country. But no matter how difficult it was, it’s not an excuse to hurt others and build his success on their suffering! But I’d rather hear it from Avery himself. After all we’ve been through, I think I deserve that.”

“Mr. Chambers! Do take care of this trouble for me this time, please!”

Upon learning that he was being hunted down across Country T, and it was the King himself who gave the order Eden was in a state of panic. As a witness, Leonard was also under control, and even the military couldn’t intervene. Frantic, he rushed to the Velvet Haven to seek Avery’s help.

“And how exactly am I supposed to help you?”

Avery swirled his glass of red wine, his eyes dark and focused on him. “It’s the royalty of Country T is after you, not me. I’m not even a local; how can I help?”

“Wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for you making me take out Thaddeus and Cassius! You’re not going to turn your back on me now, are you?”

“Don’t flatter yourself. You only wanted to earn brownie points from your boss. Avery retorted with a nonchalant smirk.

Eden was livid. He wanted nothing more than to throttle this guy! However, he was on Avery’s turf. Any rash move and he wouldn’t even be able to get out of here,

“Humph! I knew it. I knew you’d pull a fast one! You may be crafty, but I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve too!” Eden gritted his teeth, his eyes filled with rage, “Just so you know, I’ve got a recording of our last conversation! And what do you think your beloved Ms. Ashboume would do if she found out you were plotting to kill her own brother? That’s the end of your happily ever after” with her!”

With that, he made a throat–slitting gesture.

Avery’s e

eyes widened in shock, but quickly narrowed into a menacing glare!
