Evadne’s hand paused mid–air, her lovely eyes narrowing slightly. 

Confronting Warner’s mockery, she was indeed a bit miffed, but perhaps it was the stabilizing effect of being in love, her anger quickly subsided. 

Yet, while she could contain her irritation, Thaddeus could not. 

He grabbed her hand and clenched it tightly, forcefully pulling her into his embrace. His large hand gripped her shoulder as he glared at Warner with steely eyes. 

“So that’s the kind of reputation the Bright family prides itself on. I thought it was just arrogance and rudeness.” 

Warner’s brows knitted together, “What did you say?” 

“Isn’t it true?” 

Thaddeus, looking down from his height, created an oppressive atmosphere as cold as an iceberg, “I don’t care what the history is between your families, but I know Evadne–she’s a lady of grace and poise. She wouldn’t pick a fight without provocation. Your discourtesy towards her speaks volumes about you. Mr. Bright, as a man of standing and older than Evadne, your behavior is despicable.” 

Evadne looked up at him, her eyes glistening with emotion. 

She wanted to tackle him right there and then, pin him to the couch, and shower him with k*sses! 

Warner finally shot up from the sofa, his eyes blazing with fury at Thaddeus. 

“Warner!” 

At this critical moment, Chasel, with a grim expression, timely intervened. 

A few steps behind him, followed Suri, who halted at the sight of Warner, maintaining her distance, as if instinctively knowing her place. 

When word spread that the Brights had set foot in the Ashbourne estate, Myra, Aviana, Nydia, and Jason all emerged, fearing trouble. 

After all, a Bright showing up in Silverlake Harbor was as rare as a sighting of the meteor shower! 

Thaddeus, not being an Ashbourne himself, didn’t fully grasp the gravity of the situation. But seeing the tension, Evadne felt a lump in her throat.

Warner, with his hand casually in his trouser pocket, slowly turned to face him.

Before their very eyes, Warner had struck his younger brother across the face, the sound reverberating through the room.

Warner, as if determined to defy his brother, had chosen to cause a scene right there instead of taking it outside. “Don’t think I’m too harsh. You’ve dishonored our grandfather and father, and as your elder, it’s my duty to discipline you here and now, for you to learn!” 

Suri, watching her beloved nephew struck, felt her heart wrench. 

She did call them here, but she never imagined Warner would dare to resort to violence in Silverlake Harbor! 

She had to restrain herself from rushing to Chasel’s defense. 

But she had sworn an oath! 

The moment she chose to follow Emeric, against all odds, she ceased to be a Bright. Their honor or disgrace, life or death, had nothing to do with her anymore! 

Chasel’s hands trembled as he clenched them into fists, his head bowed deeply. 

All his brightness and bravado had vanished in that instant. 

“Mr. Bright! Let’s talk this out. What kind of gentleman’s behavior is this, striking someone in public?” Evadne’s eyes reddened with indignation, and she attempted to step forward but was firmly held back by Thaddeus!

But Warner seemed like a man in the late stages of rabies, and he was worried that in his frenzy, Warner might harm his precious Evadne. 

“Me disciplining a member of the Bright family is none of your concern,” Warner sneered, his words laced with contempt, “Unless, of course, the Brights breed another shameless creature who drags our name through the mud. Unless Chasel also chooses to betray us. As the eldest, it is my duty to keep him in line.” 

The words struck hard, clearly aimed at Suri without naming her. They were a blow to her pride, and everyone in the Ashbourne family could hear it. 

“Hey! What kind of nonsense are you spouting here? Who are you calling shameless? Say it to my face!” Aviana burst with rage, ready to charge at him but was held back by Myra and Nydia, who struggled as if restraining a stubborn mule, “Dare to say it, and I swear I’ll smash your face!” 

Warner merely scoffed dismissively. 

In his eyes, these women were no different from Suri, just mistresses kept by Emeric, unworthy of his attention. 

“Warner, stop. If you’re angry, direct it at me,” Chasel inhaled deeply, his eyes bloodshot and b*dy quivering, “It was my decision to come to the Ashbourne family, my decision to help Chairman Emeric.
