Chapter 1 Divorce

“Let’s get divorced.” After three years of marriage, the man, as always, chose his words carefully. He spoke without any emotion. Nancy stood behind Liam Walker, gazing at his tall and straight figure reflected in the window. She looked at his cold and ruthless face and felt her heart sink. Her hands, hanging by her side, silently clenched into fists, and she trembled. The sentence she feared the most had finally been uttered. The man turned around, revealing a more defined face. His flawless features still made her heart flutter even after three years together. “Is there any chance we can avoid getting a divorce?” Nancy struggled to speak these words, her eyes filled with desperation yet still holding onto hope. Liam frowned, and his cold gaze paused on her face. He furrowed his brow even more when he saw her reddened eyes. Even without makeup, Nancy was still beautiful. She wasn’t a stunning beauty with heavy makeup, but her fair and flawless face was pleasant to look at. She stared at him with a pair of desperate eyes. To him, she was a gentle and unremarkable woman. As a wife, she had no faults, but he simply didn’t love her. Three years ago, he had an accident and became paralyzed from the waist down. The doctor said he might never walk again. It was also at that time that he was forced to separate from his beloved woman. His mother forced him to go on blind dates and find someone with a medical background to take care of him for the rest of his life. So he chose a nurse among his admirers, Nancy Morgan, because she had no background and because she was quiet and reserved. “You have been with me for three years and have taken care of me for three years. Ten million dollars is considered compensation for you.” When the man said these words, there was no flicker in his eyes, and there was no trace of affection for her. “If you want something else…” “Why?” For the first time, Nancy interrupted his words. She was unwilling to give up. “Why do you have to bring up divorce now?” Tomorrow would be their third wedding anniversary, and she had planned so much. She even thought that after three years, another three years would come, then another twenty sets of three years would follow, and they would be together for a lifetime. “You know, the person I love is not you.” The man’s tone was cold and filled with indifference. He didn’t even leave her a glimmer of hope. “Layla has come back, and I want to marry her.” Nancy felt as if she had been struck by lightning. Her frail body couldn’t bear the weight and swayed for a moment. She had guarded this marriage for three years, but it couldn’t withstand some woman’s simple words: I’m back. “Sir…” the housekeeper hurriedly came over to report, “Ms. Rivera just vomited up her food and coughed up blood again!” The man’s calm face cracked slightly, and he bypassed Nancy and headed toward the guest room. He said in a low voice, “Get the car ready; we’re going to the hospital.” Before long, Liam emerged from the guest room, carrying a frail and sick woman in his arms. The woman was slender and weak, covered in a delicate embroidered blanket that Nancy had personally stitched. Her face was pale, with a sickly appearance, as if she could disappear from this world at any moment. She curled up in Liam’s embrace, and her voice was delicate. “Liam, Ms. Morgan…” Liam paused at the turn of the staircase; he then turned to Nancy and said, “The details of the divorce will be discussed with the lawyer. Please move out of the mansion within three days.” He then carried the woman in his arms and descended the stairs without looking back. Nancy stood on the staircase, while Layla Rivera lay in Liam’s arms. She gazed up at Nancy with a triumphant gleam in her eyes. Just an hour ago, the sick woman had smiled and said to her, “I’m back, so give him back to me.” As they completely disappeared from sight, Nancy’s body slumped down, tears silently streaming down her face. She held herself tightly, feeling an intense coldness. Ten years had gone by. Since the moment he rescued her, she had silently watched over him for ten years and loved him for ten years. How many decades did one have in a lifetime? But love was indescribable. No matter how humble she became, she couldn’t make him love her. “Liam, this is the last time I shed tears for you.” Nancy wiped away the tears and stood up from the ground. The once delicate and fragile woman had become incredibly cold. It was time to leave. The divorce agreement was placed conspicuously on the bedside table in the master bedroom. Nancy flipped directly to the last page and saw the familiar signature. Her gaze flickered, and she gently caressed the name “Liam” with her fingertips. She almost broke into tears again. She sniffed and tried to hold back the surge of tears. She had made up her mind. She picked up the pen and signed “Nancy Morgan” next to it. Since it began with this name, she would let it end with this name. Nancy placed a seal on the bedside table. It had taken her nearly a year to carefully prepare this jade, from selecting the material to purchasing it and finally completing the carving. It was her meticulously prepared third-anniversary gift for him. In fact, she had given him many gifts over the past three years. They were all carefully prepared, but in the end, they were either left unused in the wardrobe or thrown directly into the trash can, just like her feelings for him. Just as she walked out of the mansion, a black luxury car was parked by the roadside. Nancy got in the car and said lightly, “I’m divorced.” The man in the driver’s seat was wearing sunglasses. He smirked and replied, “Congratulations on regaining your freedom.” He handed his laptop to Nancy and said, “It’s time to be yourself again. We’re all waiting for your return.”
