“What? W-what are you talking about…?” I stammered, feeling my throat dry as I felt terribly judged by Richard and Ava’s scrutinizing gazes, it was as if they were reading my soul in search of the truth. 

“Good heavens, what’s all the fuss about? Even Annie could sense that something wasn’t right,” Terrence said, approaching us, leaving Annie to watch the television in the living room. 

“We’re just resolving an important issue,” Richard said to Terrence, still looking at me for an answer. 

“I know. I heard you cursing and insulting my friend Jason. Ah, be ashamed of yourselves,” said Terrence defending Jason, going close to his wife and pulling her nose lightly in an affectionate gesture, but Ava avoided him with a pout on the lips. 

“Know that no one here likes your friend,” she said to him in an 

accusatory tone. 

“True,” Richard agreed. “He’s a pain in the ass, he should know that there’s no longer a place for him in Laura’s life and he should just get away from Annie, but he keeps insisting. How hateful!” 

“Look, if you were in his place I think you would insist too, Richard,” 

said Terrence. 

“No, Terrence. I would never be in his place because, in the first place, I would never lose Laura’s love like your idiot friend did. Let him. suffer, it’s only his fault, he lost her, and then let him be content with that,” said Richard, insisting.

I just sighed and shook my head. “Terrence is just protecting his friend, Richard,” I said. 

“That’s right, I’m not going to let my friend be massacred by you guys like that. Jason has changed, okay? Stop thinking he’s a psychopathic criminal who’s going to do Annie any harm,” said Terrence, exasperated. 

“He’s changed so much that one day he says he loves Laura and th next he’s hanging out with sluts,” countered Ava. 

“What? Sluts?” I even screamed in amazement and then looked in the 

direction of my daughter, reproaching myself. I looked back at Ava and asked quietly. “What did you say?” 

“That’s exactly what you heard, Lau. Jason hasn’t changed a damn thing. He keeps meeting some suspicious women, one of them called Suzy,” said Ava. 

“Stop it, honey,” Terrence said, stopping his wife from talking any

Ava and Terrence had to go back to their house in Manhattan, the couple even invited Annie and me to spend Christmas with their family, but Richard insisted that I had to spend it his aunt who lived in the Bronx, so I ended up accepting Richard
