Chapter Forty Six

After saying goodbye to Flint, Eve entered the pack house. They’re parting was tense, but that’s because her mate was worried. She could feel that much.

Anna had been instructed to gather her research material when the Luna arrived. Eve came to sit beside her on the sofa and looked at the files piled on the coffee table.

“A bit much, don’t you think?” She smiled.

“You asked for my research. This is it.” Anna furrowed her brows.

“I know, Anna. It was a joke.” Eve laughed lightly.

“Yes, Luna.” The specialist nodded.

“Okay then...” She shook off the awkward moment. “Let’s start with you telling me what you know now. Have you found her?”

“If I had, I would have informed you immediately. I did manage to narrow down the prospects though.” Anna began looking through the documents.

“Okay. Maybe I can help you narrow it down more.” Eve nodded curiously.

“I have three possible locations. All of them are funded by Star Dust Hope.” Anna handed her several sheets. “This one is a well known foster home for rogue children. They’re not extremely wealthy or comfortable, but their rooms are listed by gender and age. Not name.”

“I don’t know if she’d go to a foster home. Living with children while being away from your own...” Eve shook her head thoughtfully.

“Alright. Option two.” She handed her some more information. “This is an apartment building for families. It’s got two names on the leases that are obvious fakes.”

“These two.” She smiled. “Dale Flockhart and Faith Temperance.”

“Yes, Luna.” Anna nodded.

“Hmmm... What’s the other option?” Eve probed thoughtfully.

“An office space. Star Dust owns several apartments in a building downtown. Recently, they’ve been “renovating” one upstairs according to their records but I think that’s a lie. There is no record of a crew being hired, no equipment, no noise.”

“That’s the one.” She smiled to herself as she read over the paperwork.

“How do you know?” Anna asked curiously.

“I’m not sure. I just have this feeling.” Eve explained vaguely.

A moment later, the front door opened. They turned to see Johnny limp into the room before he threw himself down into he armchair across from them.

“I thought you were staying home to heal?” The Luna questioned him.

“I convinced Duncan to let me go with him but Flint sent me here anyway.” He sighed.

“Poor baby warrior.” Anna smiled sarcastically.

“Oh, shut up. Just because you’re a specialist, you talk smack. You must hate me for my youth.” Johnny scoffed.

She chuckled and lifted her hands in mock surrender.

“Guys, I’m loving the comradery but cut it out.” Eve interrupted as she laid her phone on the table. “See this?”

She pointed at the screen. She had pulled up a map of the area where the office was located. With the satellite view, you could see the power line and a red roofed building across the street.

“I saw these when I video chatted with Selena. That has to be where she is.” Eve stated.

“You’ve talked to Selena?!” Johnny gazed at her in surprise.

“Yeah. I have some things to fill you in on.” She nodded.

“I’ll say.” He sat up expectantly.

“You were busy getting yourself torn up in the tournament.” Eve gestured to his injured leg.

“Hey!” He replied.

“Be careful, Luna. Soon he’ll accuse you of ‘hating him for his youth’.” Anna’s air quotes made Eve laugh.

“Alright, alright.” Johnny chuckled before looking back to Eve. “So, tell me what happened.”

Flint called after her lengthy explanation. He was relieved to hear that she hadn’t left the pack house or dragged his warriors along with her. Eve told him she had found the location where Selena was staying. He paused. She could sense his hesitance in going to find his mother.

Selena had told them, in no uncertain terms, that she wanted them to stop looking for her. She had chosen to leave the pack. She would reach out to them, or come back, when she felt she was able. Flint was apprehensive about trying to drag her anywhere. Especially since he had made an agreement with Alpha Noah from the SilverCrest pack.

“We shouldn’t do anything with this information right now.” Eve eventually broke the quiet. “We should probably focus on all this after the Call. Not before.”

“Right. I agree.” Flint released a relieved breath.

“You’ll be here soon, right?” She probed.

“Of course. Just stay there.” He replied before ending the phone call.

The truck pulled up outside a little while later and the group gathered inside. After everyone got seated and settled, all eyes turned to the Alpha.

“Jack Fields is gone. He’s with Bastian, who left a calling card for me to find.” Flint stated.

Eve’s mind began racing nervously. He was back, not just on the way. He had been within a day’s drive of GreenTree. Flint sensed her thoughts and he casually placed his hand on her thigh. The warmth of his skin reminded Eve to replace her calm expression; while the electricity between them reminded her that she was safe.

“Anna, you’re work in the valley has been concluded. You can return to the territory whenever you like. Take a week off, you’ve done very well.” Flint met the specialist’s gaze.

She nodded silently. The pride she felt swelling in her chest passed through the mindlink. The praise of her Alpha meant more to her than she would ever let on.

“Johnny, you go with Duncan back to GreenTree. I don’t want to see you back on patrols until your limp is gone. Understand?” He looked at the young warrior seriously.

“If I have to.” He grumbled.

“What was that?” Flint raised his eyebrows, everyone knew he had heard the comment.

“Uh-huh.” He turned to the commander. “You have the tournament tomorrow. Rest up and eat well.”

Duncan nodded. Flint stood as the front door opened again. A slender man with black hair entered the room. He was short and he was dressed like he had been living on the streets for a while.

“Peter.” The Alpha nodded to him.

“I’m here for my next assignment.” He replied.

Flint looked at the sheet of paper on the table. There was the address where Selena had been staying. He simply picked it up and held the paper out to him.

“Observe. Do not approach. Security level A. Biweekly updates unless you have something specific.” He explained.

“Yes, Alpha.” Peter took the sheet.

He turned around and left without another word. Flint dismissed the group. Eve noticed how Flint stopped Duncan in the doorway, even though he was subtle.

“You will do well tomorrow. I hope to see you across the field at the end of the day.” The Alpha lowered his voice.

Duncan gave him a small nod and a half-smile before departing. After saying goodbye to Anna, Eve and her mate drove toward GreenTree. Their trip to the valley had been, somehow, both exhausting and utterly uneventful at the same time.
