After he had heard the news that there was an attack in the facility, Jaxon had to make an abrupt leave from the Southern Werewolves Pack’s territory. He spent a day there, aiding the pack with their current problem with a new Angel of Death and the attack he launched against them. He knew Cohen’s pack was strong enough to defend while Jaxon returned to his own territory, fear that the hunters might do something while he was out of town.

The scout report said an attack was launched approximately in mid-day of yesterday. They weren’t able to get into the facility because Jaxon refused to approve their request. Although his scout men were the best, he didn’t want to risk their lives by sending them deeper into the hostile zone. Only Goddess knew how many hunters were in the facility. The tracking device he planted on Zia was offline. It was whether the device was found or something blocked its signal from transmitting out. Either way, Jaxon was going to check the place on his own. By the time he reached there, there were many police cars, securing the perimeter around the hospital while the officers were in and out. Reporters were making live coverage of the situation. Jaxon remained in his car as he listened to every word left from all the reporters.

“One attacker is still active in the hospital—” the blonde reported report but he didn’t listen further to her words. S~ᴇaʀᴄh the ꜰindNʘvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Jaxon turned to listen to a male reporter, “According to the police officers, the hospital is a cover of an illegal training facility—”

“Reportedly, there are still civilians in the building—”

“Illegal weapons are found—”

“Twenty-five men were confirmed dead on the scene during the shooting—"

"—heavily armed and dangerous—”

“The attacker has been identified as Brody Sawyer, aged 31—”

One of the windows on the fourth floor of the hospital shattered causing the reporters and the police officers startled before a body was thrown out of the broken window, landed on top of one of the cars parked outside the hospital. Jaxon spotted a familiar figure stood before another window. Everyone else was busy reporting about the newly dead body while he was staring at the familiar figure. Zia made her presence known to him and his hands curled into fists when he saw the bruises on her face. Guilt crept into his soul when he realized he was the one who gave her back to Joshua and looked what the monster had done to her. Jaxon could have protected her. He could have saved his sister in another method but his judgment was clouded by emotions. Now, Zia was suffering from the result of his decision.

His phone rang and he answered it without taking his eyes off her.

“Hello?” Jaxon said.

“Are you happy, Jaxon?” her voice came through the speaker.

She sounded in so much pain. The tone was quivering and there was a hint of fear in it.

“Zia, we don’t have to do this. Come down now, I’d listen to what you have to say.”

She let out a painful chuckle, “Was it that easy for you, Alpha? You gave up on me. You let him took me.”

“Don’t do it.”

“I have enough blood to spill, Alpha.” She was no longer standing by the window. “What’s it going to be, Alpha? Am I going to die by your trial if I come down now? Are you going to put me into the dungeon again? Prisoner 1332, that was what your men called me.”

His hand clenched around the cell phone as he listened to everything she had to say to him.

“Did you lie about everything, Jaxon? The kisses, the nicknames, the dance, the hugs—everything you showed to me before it went downhill.”

Was it a lie? Did he lie to her from the beginning? Yes and no. A part of him was deceiving her as he wanted to find out more about Ashton’s family of hers. Another part of him wished the affections he had shown to her was purely from his heart. Who wouldn’t shower their mate with love, affections, and kisses? Every werewolf dreamed of that. But Jaxon was wishing he did that for the woman who wasn’t a killer of his uncle. He just couldn’t ignore the fact that Hanson died in her hands. How was Jaxon going to live by the fact if he mated to her? What would his pack think of him for choosing a killer of his own family member as his mate and Luna?

“No,” he replied truthfully because there was no point to lie anymore. “I really wished it wasn’t you pulled the trigger.”

“I didn’t know he belonged to a pack,” Her voice broken even more.

He could hear her sobs. His wolf growled to him. He wasn’t sure if his wolf was disapproving his affection towards Zia or because they didn’t go into the facility and comforted her. Jaxon was as confused as his wolf. Deep inside of him, he wanted to run to her and comfort and protect her until his final breath, but he couldn’t do that. His pride and ego were larger than his affection for his mate. Was she still his mate?

“I know,”

“I hope you find your happiness, Jaxon,”

“Zia, please don’t do it.”

“I have nothing else to lose. I lost my brothers. And I’m going to send Joshua to hell for that.”

The call ended abruptly, causing Jaxon to curse out in anger. He couldn’t barge in through the front door. Running to the woods on the left side of the hospital, he made his way around. If there was any chance for him to save her even if his pack disgraced him for it, hell, he’d do it. He made a mistake when he traded her for his sister. But what else could he do about it? It was like asking who do you love more? Your mother or your father?

Joshua gave him a tough choice and Zia suffered because of it. Three gunshots from the facility were all it took for him to barge in without backup.
