Legends of Amacia The Awakening
Chapter 9 A Visit to the Infirmary

After stopping at the kitchen to satisfy their hunger pangs, Hanna and Selina headed to the infirmary to check on the wounded still recovering. Upon entering, Hanna and Selina stopped to survey the scene. A two-acre room with a thirty-foot ceiling spread out before them filled with beds laid out in neat rows. The wounded from Hanna’s raid into the Black Fortress lay on the beds, sleeping. Most of them had made use of the Healer, which had stabilized their conditions, but not completely healed them. The large room was very quiet, punctuated by an occasional snore or moan. Hanna instantly noticed about a quarter of the beds lay empty. A sigh escaped her lips. “So many needlessly hurt by that demon,” she whispered, pushing Selina forward down the main aisle. “Yes,” Selina murmured. “But if you look, not all the beds are being used. The doctors must be making some progress.”

“It looks like it,” Hanna agreed, seeing Dr. Drew off in the distance tending to a patient two aisles to the left. “Let’s see if Drew knows where our friends are.” Selina nodded as Hanna picked up the pace, moving quickly to Dr. Drew.

Hearing Hanna and Selina coming, Drew turned to them as they approached. “Shhh,” he hissed. “Try to keep it down. People are trying to sleep in here.”

“I know,” Hanna said softly. “Are you here by yourself?”

“For the moment,” Drew reported. “I told Lola, Jessica, and Emma to go get something to eat a few minutes ago. They haven’t had anything to eat for several hours. They’ll be back shortly. Until then, I can manage.”

“You’re a good man,” Hanna commended. “Your loyalty to your patients is exemplary. How are they doing?”

“Most are resting comfortably,” Drew answered. “Even though many have been in the healing machine, they’re still not completely recovered. The machine is stopping just short for some reason we don’t understand. Didn’t you have the same complaint about the machine?”

“We did, doctor,” Hanna replied in a hushed tone. “But still, something is better than nothing. Time will do what the Healer didn’t.”

“I hope so,” Drew answered. “What brings you down here today?”

“We wanted to see Myra and the others,” Selina stated. “Do you know where they’re at? I don’t see them here in this multitude.”

“That’s because they aren’t here,” Drew replied. “They recovered to the point we let them go. They should be with the other girls from the Harem in the barracks. It’s good that you’re going to see them. Myra has been particularly depressed since she woke. I think you visiting them would do her a world of good.”

“Then that’s where we’ll go,” Hanna said amiably. “I wanted to see her before now, but every time I start to go see her, something got in the way. It’s irritating since I know she’s wanted to see me since she woke. I really didn’t get a chance to talk one on one with her during the photo session the other day.”

“Then don’t let me hold you up,” Drew stated with a sober smile. “I have to continue with my rounds. Maybe later you can come by and talk with some of our other patients. I’m sure they’d love to see you face to face.”

“Okay, I can do that,” Hanna chimed, “Maybe we can even help out a bit.”

“That would be great,” Drew declared. “Even with the help Dr. Bishop and I have, we are a bit understaffed in here. Any help would be a godsend. We still have some comatose patients that haven’t awakened yet.”

“Then we’ll stop by later to help out,” Selina offered. “You have my word on it.”

“And mine,” Hanna said resolutely. “We’ll see you after a while.” Drew nodded and went back to checking on the patients. Turning Selina’s chair around, Hanna rolled her to the exit. “We have to get some more help in here,” she murmured.

“Don’t worry,” Selina replied. “We’ll get the help these people deserve. Now, let’s get to the barracks and see Myra, Izanami, and the others.”

“Right away, princess,” Hanna replied as they left the infirmary heading to barracks.
