Chapter 10: Risky Rescue

When we docked at the safe house several hours later, the lights were out, the air was still smoky and walls were ripped opened and the ceiling caved in around most places. It felt weird because 2 days ago this was once a beautiful house and now it was a wrecked mess that I didn't even recognize. When I turned around Mac was gone and suddenly the emergency lights kicked on and mac came up saying "emergency power restored but it'll only last for several minutes". After we found what used to be the living room, we sifted through the debris and found the refrigerators that were built into the floor and salvaged the replicators as the power began to fail. I told Mac we'd better get out of here, I'm sure augments are still lurk- and before I could finish my sentence, a group of 3 augments was blocking our path to the vehicle bay.

Mac gave me the floating hopper and used his stun cannons and told me to leave, as more augments came in. I made it back to the car and loaded the replicators and took off at maximum speed and successfully cleared the augments and landed at the base a few hours later. When I landed, grandma greeted me and took the replicators and told me to come in for some breakfast, but I had other things to do so I came in, skipped breakfast; grabbed my blaster, and as many power cells as I could carry. Grandma asked where I was going and I said "to get an old friend " but before I could lift off, Ernie got in the car and said "let's go" as I smiled and hit the booster and headed back for the safe house. Halfway into the trip, grandma told us to return immediately and to not be stupid and I said "no, I'm going back for Mac, we need him and she said "what if you don't find him, what'll you do then and I said, "I'll admit defeat and return here".

When we landed it was around noon but it still was dark so I equipped our blasters with flashlights as we headed in search for Mac. We searched for 2 hours until we stumbled upon his crushed and mangled exoskeleton and for Ernie, the sight of Mac destroyed, sent him into rage as a group of augments conveniently show up. Ernie turned his blaster up to vaporize and screamed "you mother fuckers, before gunning them down and helping me lift macs remains onto a hopper as more augments came. After loading Mac's remains into the car I turned to Ernie and said "time for target practice "as we cut loose in a murderous rage, killing augments left and right until there were too many and we ended up closing the blast door.

Before we left I saw a glowing light from this huge black door that was opened and when I went in search of the light source, I found a huge armored car, with guns, a large tank muzzle, and spikes on its bumper, however, the glowing was coming from inside. When I entered the car, the glowing was coming from 5 exoskeleton suits like iron man wore,3 adult-sized and 2 small ones with our names on them so I grabbed the 2 and told Ernie put his on and I put mines on as augments began to smash through the blast door. I told Ernie we're out of time as I said "computer start the car", and as all the consoles came online I told the computer "silent flight mode" and the voice said acknowledged as we escaped out the tunnel after collecting Macs remains and into the setting sun, only this time, we had company.

The car dumped flares and fired missiles and one by one each jet fell out of the sky with little resistance, however before one jet crashed; it launched 2 missiles that struck us and damaged major systems causing us to make an emergency water landing. The computer said the damage was to the car's power couplings and rocket booster matrix and that it would take several hours to repair with computer supervision, but at least auxiliary power was holding and we had the food replicators we could tie into the car's power. The afternoon turned into evening as evening turned into night time but we still couldn't move until the rocket matrix stabilizer was replaced so we were definitely spending the night on the water as the car floated on its pontoons, rocking like an old wooden sailing ship. 

Me and Ernie gazed at the stars and wondered about the future until Ernie broke the silence and said "do you think well make it out of this one sis? and I said we will find a way Ernie I promise" and don't worry, mom and dad will survive, they're strong. I said to Ernie "we're their guardians now, and it's up to us and we will succeed just trust me and Ernie said "ok" as we turned over and went to sleep. The next morning I woke up and got to work and thanks to the computer, we were ready for liftoff after 2 hours of repair. We landed at the base late in the afternoon and brought Mac into our house as grandma griped at us and after a few scans we realized his human tissue regenerated but his cyborg half needed fixing and the only one who knew how to work the technology was grandma.  

Despite our stunt earlier she helped us reconfigure the replicators to replicate parts from Mac's blueprints and after a few hours of Mac's diagnostic computer guiding us, we managed to restore macs power systems. Mac powered on and said "how'd I get here" and I explained to Mac, the whole story and sure enough afterward he scolded us and thanked us and said, "I can handle the repairs from here". The next 3 weeks, we spent replicating weapons and delivering them to distribution centers and thanks to several other remote bases, we were now ready to commence the final assault; that date was now October 26th, and tomorrow at nightfall, the fight for our lives and our country would begin.
