Chapter 8: Clever Counterstrike

When I woke up the next morning, the house was bustling with activity; mom and dad were reviewing papers with Mac while grandma was cooking and Ernie was playing video games. I came into the living room and sat down and stared at mom and dad until grandma brought my plate and on it was her famous chocolate chip pancakes with eggs and bacon. After eating breakfast I asked mom and dad what they were doing and they told me it was very important and when I tried to ask more details, grandma led me and Ernie away to our rooms and told us to let the grownups figure this out while you guys play and I reluctantly said "okay" as she closed the door and I decided to take her advice, yet part of me loved being in charge and it was hard to let it go.

[Frankie's pov] After grandma told me that she took the kids to their rooms, I summoned Mac to join me as I typed my passcode into the operations computer which lowered us on a platform to another level of the safe house. I said "welcome to the command bunker; this is where the bio labs, meeting rooms, offices, and research facilities are located" and Isabella looked at me confused and said "when was this installed?" and I said, "this was always here, but I didn't know until grandma gave me a tour and showed me all the secret rooms since mom and dad never had the chance to". When we entered the meeting room, it had beige walls with large master display screens and oak wood furniture with black chairs and blue carpet, it was quite impressive but the focus quickly shifted to the situation as everyone took their seats.  

I looked at everyone and said "we all know why we're here" as I loaded DNA strands on the master display. Grandma asked what was that and I said "those are me and Isabella DNA strands on the left and the augments DNA on the right, as you can see, their DNA is similar but there's a major difference". Their DNA is full of regenerative proteins and chemicals that stimulate growth towards damaged tissues and increases their immune system s which grants them the ability to not be affected by diseases, radiation or even fire". Isabella said, "what we need to do is find a way to disrupt the cells production of regenerative antibodies and chemicals and Mac will be key to assisting us since Mr. Harvey isn't here". Grandma asked me what happened to Harvey and I told her that Mr. Gearing killed him and the resistance members while trying to probe their minds for Dr. Himata's research but before we left on the mission Harvey handed me a chip with all of Dr. Himata's research in case an event like this was to happen.

After the meeting ended I told grandma she would be in charge of the kids for the next few days while me and Isabella worked with Mac to create a serum to remove the augments genetic enhancements. We ended up working from morning to nighttime for the next several days, developing and testing the serum on the frozen augment samples we had in cryotubes and after 2 additional days, we had created the perfect serum and now had to figure out how to mass-produce and distribute it to every augment in the US. Meanwhile, grandma took good care of the kids and life was normal for them, and for the first time in a while, Isabella was actually relaxed and enjoying herself. While me and mac dealt with the problem of mass production. After we all ate dinner as a family, everyone went off to sleep as tomorrow would be another busy day for me and Mac.

[Camilla's pov]The last week had been normal since we rescued our parents but little did I know, yesterday was the last day of normality I would have, until this was over. The morning started with blaring alarms and the computer saying "warning proximity alert, followed by mom rushing into my room. She rushed me out of bed and into normal clothes and said "honey take my hand and don't let go as an explosion rocked the house, causing the lights to flicker, the ceiling to collapse and fires to break out. When we found dad, he gave my mom a blaster and looked at me and said "here Camilla" and mom looked at him and he said we've got no choice, remember sweetie, wide stance and keep it on kill setting 1..it's the only setting that stuns them". Dad game mom a specially modified blaster and told her it would emit a disruption pulse that would destroy the regenerative cells in the augments.

Dad told me and mom to get to the garage while him and grandma held off the augments, but mom refused to leave dad, so she gave me my blaster and turned to Mac and said "take good care of my children and protect the serum, well be along after we destroy everything and Mac said "acknowledged, I will not fail you". As Mac carried me to the vehicle bay, I heard dad call out, computer activate the modified defense grid and then I heard guns and blasters firing yet I kept calling out "mommy...dad don't leave us again "as tears trickled down my face. The car took off down the tunnel and out into the forest before pulling up steeply into the clouds and commencing stealth mode and after I wiped my tears, I asked Mac where we were going and he said "that's classified at the moment, but we shall arrive in the late evening and all will be explained upon arrival. Just as I began to feel worried, Ernie grabbed me and said "don't worry Mac will keep us safe and well get mom and dad out of any situation just like before sis" as he smiled at me and Mac said, "that is affirmative". I smiled and began to feel like no matter what lies ahead, we are a team and we'll be ready and able to take what's thrown at us.
