Chapter 5

Five years later at the airport, the arrival floor was packed with people clutching signs after the plane landed at three o’clock.

A reporter from Epoch Daily rubbed his sore hand. Leaning into his companion, he whispered, “My hands are killing me… Do you reckon the night might be delayed?”

“That’s unlikely. She informed us before boarding the plane, so it won’t be delayed,” replied his companion.

“Good to know. Say, she’s from Alenvista and just has spent the past five years abroad, and now she’s returned for only an ordinary position, but why did the senior editor send us to pick her up?” the reporter pondered aloud.

His companion explained, “Haven’t you heard? She spent three years on the frontlines, conducting interviews amidst conflict zones. She’s witnessed numerous wars and amassed a wealth of stories. However, for some reason, she couldn’t do fieldwork anymore. Rumor has it that something she witnessed on the battlefield compelled her to return and seek psychiatric treatment. Such a pity that her talent had to go to waste. But even as an ordinary employee, she still has potential. That’s why the senior editor regards her so highly.”

“I see,” responded the reporter. sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ Find_Nøvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

gaze, bright and gentle,

“Yes,” Margaret confirmed with a smile. “Actually, there’s no need to pick me up. I grew up in Alenvista, so I won’t get lost, even after five years abroad.”

“Hello, I’m Colin Whittaker. Well, even though you know the way, picking you up is a nice gesture on our part!” the reporter chuckled as he trailed behind Margaret. Then he leaned in to whisper to his companion, “Why didn’t anyone tell me she’s so beautiful?”

“She won’t fall for you. What’s the point of mentioning it?” His companion rolled his eyes,

Margaret walked ahead with composure, paying no mind to their exchange.

The trio climbed into the car and left the airport, navigating through the bustling ring road.

Seated by the window, Margaret gazed out after some time, her eyes reflecting complex emotions.

It had been five years since she left. At that time, she had bravely left everything behind to embark on a new chapter of her life. Yet, as she returned to Alenvista, she realized how much she loved and missed her hometown.

Upon arriving at the news agency, the two reporters stepped out, opening the door for Margaret. They couldn’t resist stealing repeated glances at Margaret’s captivating visage.

Margaret proceeded directly to the HR Department for a work handover before being escorted to the elevator.

“Our senior editor mentioned you prefer q quiet, so she arranged an office for you,” Colin remarked with a smile.

With a polite but somewhat reserved smile, Margaret nodded. “Thank you.” Having spent three years amidst the chaos of the battlefield, she

had grown accustomed to a more rugged approach to life. Hence, she wasn’t used to such enthusiasm. “Your senior editor…”

“Ah, she is currently interviewing a big shot over there.” Colin gestured in a specific direction.

“Clifford? What’s he doing here?’ Margaret mused.

Noticing Margaret’s blank expression, Colin grinned knowingly. “You must have heard of him. It’s Dr. Clifford Huxley, the top surgeon. His clinic has bookings lined up until next spring! We went to great lengths to invite him here.”

A genuine smile tugged at Margaret’s lips as she reflected, “Not only am I familiar with him, but we’re also old friends!

The door swung open, revealing a surprised Clifford stepping out.

His eyes widened as he took in Margaret’s presence. “Margaret! You’re back!”

Colin watched in astonishment, his mouth hanging open as he observed the interaction between the two old friends. He wisely chose to

remain silent as he thought, “They seem to be good friends.

“I’m sorry I didn’t inform you; it was a sudden decision, Margaret apologized.

Clifford’s smile softened. “No n

need to apologize. It’s wonderful to have you back. How long do you plan to stay?”

Margaret’s expression flickered with uncertainty, and she thought, “How long indeed? A month? A year? A lifetime?”

Shrugging, she replied, “I don’t know.”

“My interview is wrapped up. Care to join me for a meal?” Clifford suggested.

Margaret glanced at Colin for confirmation.

“Absolutely, go ahead!” Colin instantly said.

Checking the time, Margaret nodded. “Sure.” She missed Alenvista’s local food.

As they departed, a flurry of gossip ensued within the news agency.

Someone exclaimed, “What a bombshell! How does Ms. Wilcox know Clifford? We’ve been on his waiting list for two months just for a mere hour appointment, and he asked her out for a meal just like that?”

The second gossiper chimed in, “Did you notice Dr. Huxley’s reaction? All the effort I put into my makeup today feels like a waste…”

Curiosity piqued, the third gossiper queried, “What was his expression?”

“He couldn’t take his eyes off Ms. Wilcox! His gaze was practically glowing. Are you blind or stupid?” replied the second gossiper.

The fourth gossiper interjected, “The most powerful weapon a woman possesses isn’t her beauty alone; it’s the captivating allure she exudes with just a single glance. I think Margaret’s that kind of woman.”

The conversation carried on.

Meanwhile, Margaret followed Clifford into the private room of a renowned Japrlumian restaurant.

“You’re in for a treat today,” he announced cheerfully. “This place is my favorite; they’ve just received a fresh shipment of seafood from

Blallas today, Straight from the plane to your plate.”

Margaret chuckled. “What an honor.”

“Take a look at the menu. What would you like?” Clifford said.

Margaret pushed the menu back with a faint expression. “You decide.”

As Clifford took the menu, he couldn’t help stealing glances at Margaret. Feigning nonchalance, he said, “I heard there was an air crash on the

battlefield after I left, resulting in heavy casualties.”

Margaret froze, casting her gaze downward.
