Chapter 14 Falling from the Sky

The measurement this time went exceptionally smoothly, with the three of them working seamlessly together. Mark and Daniel took the measurements, while Maria documented them. Initially, Maria had intended to focus on the measurements of Building G. However, given their excellent teamwork and some extra time on their hands, she thought of collecting additional data sets, including those of Building C, D, and F. Currently, excavation work was ongoing at Building G. In her design proposal, Maria had advocated for the early introduction of large green plants, which was approved and well-received. Hence, her objective was to check whether the greenery could be done as planned. “Daniel, Mark, after we finish measuring Building G, shall we also measure Buildings C, D, and F?” Maria suggested to the two interns. “Absolutely!” Mark and Daniel agreed readily, efficiently taking measurements. Building G was measured quickly, and then they headed toward Building C. Mark glanced up at the crane in operation and kindly reminded, “Maria, double-check if your helmet is securely fastened. Although accidents with falling crane parts are rare, it’s always better to be cautious. You never know when bad luck might strike!” “Okay!” Maria said with a smile, readjusting her helmet for added security. Upon arriving in the area of Building C, Mark smiled and said, “Maria, you can stay here and record the data. Daniel and I will handle the measurements!” “Alright!” Maria opened the blueprint. Mark and Daniel leaned in closer to inspect the design. Maria pointed out specific locations they needed to measure, explaining the purpose of each required data, and ensuring more precise measurements. Suffering from a hangover, Maria felt her headache intensifying. She involuntarily rubbed her temple. Mark and Daniel began their measurements, periodically reporting the data back to her. Despite her headache, Maria jotted down the numbers swiftly. The data from Building G confirmed that the introduction of greenery posed no issues. Upon her return, she planned to liaise with the landscaping department to arrange for large plants to be brought in next week. Before winter set in, the plants would be nourished with nutrients for a couple of days to ensure minimal plant mortality. By spring, they would be thriving, becoming a significant selling point for the property’s landscape. The thought of her plan not only earning a reward of 30 thousand dollars but also the autonomy in its execution uplifted her spirits. Damn, the headache was back. Alcohol truly wasn’t a good thing. “Maria, the distance from the north wall to the atrium is 11 meters, and it’s 17 meters to the suspension bridge!” Mark reported. Shaking her head to fend off a bout of dizziness, Maria looked at Mark and apologized, “Sorry, I zoned out for a moment. What was the distance from the north wall to the atrium again?” “It’s 11 meters!” Holding a tape measure, Mark stood straight, smiling, “Maria, don’t push yourself too hard. Did you stay up late working on designs again?” Suddenly, Mark’s expression shifted dramatically, and he yelled, “Watch out!” He lunged towards Maria. Maria furrowed her brows, instinctively looking up to witness dark objects plummeting from the towering crane above. She froze. The rapidly approaching objects gave her no chance to dodge. That must be a fatal one! Reflexively, Maria squeezed her eyes shut. She could even feel the tremor in her fingers gripping the pen. But the expected impact never came. Instead, a forceful shove sent her crashing onto the ground, scattering her pen and blueprint. Realizing what had happened, she quickly looked around to find Mark struck by the falling debris. He lay in a pool of blood, with fresh crimson seeping from his forehead and the corner of his lips. “Mark!” Maria screamed, rushing to his side. Her lips quivered as she fumbled for her phone, mumbling, “Ambulance! Call an ambulance!” At that time, Maria was too scared to retrieve the phone from her pocket.
