Chapter 4 She Won’t Back Down

After Hawk left the ward, Maria frowned while staring at the ceiling. Scarlett only knew that Tim had robbed her of the plan which was the result of her burning the night oil. Scarlett did not know that her high fever was not because of that, but because of a phone call. The phone call made her furious. The woman she no longer had interaction with three years ago said to her disdainfully on the phone, “Leave Erus City, Maria! Chris is developing his career in Erus City!” Chris Anderson was her ex-boyfriend, and the woman was the reason why she left Ferres City three years ago. And after three years, the woman still got the nerve to ask her to leave Erus City so cheekily! Maria remembered that she said on the phone, “I will not leave Erus City, and I will not let anyone control my decision or disrupt my life!” The woman became angry on the phone. She said, “Maria, you’d better be smart and leave Erus City, or I promise that I’ll make sure you have a miserable life. Don’t fantasize about getting back together with Chris. You’re nothing but a tainted, abandoned woman. What makes you think that Chris would want a woman like you?” Maria hung up the phone. She thought, “Her paths and mine will never cross again. Why should I continue to listen? “Did she say that she would make sure I have a miserable life? Alright then. I’ll wait and see.” The next day arrived. The second Tim saw Maria, he smiled brightly. He asked her to go to his office and then shoved her an envelope, which obviously contained money. Yet she refused to take it. She had already heard from Scarlett that with her plan, Tim was rewarded 35 thousand dollars by the headquarters, and the money in the envelope would not be more than 1,600 dollars. She wasn’t a fool, and she knew the difference between 35 thousand dollars and 1,600 dollars. She smiled and turned Tim down, saying, “Mr. Hanks, what’s this? A bonus? As far as I know, the reward for the plan is 35 thousand dollars.” She thought, “Tim has stolen my ideas a few times, but this is the first time he’s stolen my entire design. Am I a pushover in his eyes? “When he stole from me previously, Scarlett was always indignant, cursing him non-stop, whereas I simply smiled and let go. I figured that Tim was my boss, and I worked under him, and it was fine that he took my ideas from me once in a while. Subordinates are supposed to look out for their superiors. Otherwise, what’s the point of having subordinates at all? “Yet this time, I’m more like a slave than a subordinate. And I refuse to be a slave!” Tim once said to Maria arrogantly, “Maria, if you’ve got balls, try and report me to headquarters. See if they believe you or me. “Let me tell you something. Vivian Bentley, one of Mr. White’s secretaries, is my cousin. “Don’t be impulsive, young woman. Think about this. I managed to be the design director of the branch company of the White Group. And of course, I’m better than others in terms of both design capabilities and socializing skills. “Maria, listen to me. If you look on the bright side, your mood will brighten. Think of it this way. It’s an honor for you that I favor your plan.” Maria sneered and thought, “Sure enough, only those cheeky and scheming ones have a future.” “Maria, what do you mean? Don’t be ungrateful. What is it? You want 35 thousand dollars? You?” Tim was embarrassed and furious after being turned down by Maria. For the first time, Maria confronted Tim. She said, “Yes. Me! I always thought that making compromises would be the best solution. Turns out I was wrong. Backing down always will only result in me being cornered. There are some people in this world who take what belongs to others and have no problem with it. So, Tim, I want every penny of the 35 thousand dollars back, because the money belongs to me to begin with!” She swore that she would never give up anything that was rightfully hers. Tim laughed wildly. “You? Maria Nolan? Sure! I’ll wait! I’ll wait to see what you can do to get the 35 thousand dollars back! Get out of my office!” Maria straightened her back and turned to leave the director’s office. As far as she knew, the CEO of the White Group was a man in his fifties who had seven secretaries. The secretaries dealt with different things, but they all took complaints from the group’s subsidiaries and things like that. Maria took a deep breath and sent the documents that she had compiled at home last night to prove that she was the designer of “Warm Spring”, the landscape design plan of “Great Mansion”, to the email address of Madisyn Blake, one of the secretaries of the White Group. Although the email was sent, she was very uneasy. She remembered Tim saying that he had a cousin, who was one of the secretaries of the White Group. She hoped her email would not be withheld. Otherwise, she would have to put a lot of thought into it for the sake of the 35 thousand dollars as well as the design plan she had worked so hard on. At noon, she saw a familiar figure right after she came out of the Project Department. He was wearing a sharp suit and polished shoes. He had a slender figure, perfect features, and a pair of sharp eyes.
