Devin’s life had completely changed in less than a month. Instead of living in Dayton, Ohio he now lived on a tropical island in Hawaii. Instead of living with his mother he lived with a bunch of extremely intelligent children and in addition, he had his father talking to him in his head. He knew something very wrong was going on around him but his father would not talk about it. He kept telling him, “It is not the time for you to know. Learn all you can for now.”

Devin walked around with the letter in his backpack. It seemed Mr. Gaydos was always around during his P.E. class. Devin was sure he was purposely keeping him from being alone with Mr. Jones.

A few days later he saw Mr. Jones alone. Kevin had waited outside of the gym Mr. Jones was conducting PE in. He pretended to be searching for something in his backpack until all of the children had left. He crept through the open gym door and walked up to Mr. Jones whose back was turned.

“Hi, grandpa,” Devin said cautiously. Mr. Jones whipped around and stared at him. Tears began to well up in his eyes.

“You know?” He stammered. Devin nodded.

Scott got down on one knee so that his head was a little bit higher than Devin’s.

“Have you seen him lately? Where is he?” he pleaded.

“Can you mail a letter for me? I don’t think PIGC is sending my letters to my mom.” Devin handed him the letter. “I haven’t seen my dad since I was a baby. Well, I haven’t been in the same room I should say.” Devin paused and looked into the older man’s eyes. “I can see him in my dreams though and he talks to me when I am awake.” Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the Find_Nøvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“Good. He used to talk to his mother like that.”

“It’s our green eyes he said.”

Scott stood up and folded the envelope. He put it in his pants back pocket.

“I will make sure this is mailed. You’d better go. They will be looking for you.”

“Why can’t I talk to you?”

“I don’t know son. I don’t know what’s going on. I have learned not to ask questions but maybe I’ll start.” Scott looked down at Devin. “You need to go now.” He laughed as he looked at him. “You look so much like him. I never saw him as a seven-year-old but I bet he looked just like you!” He started to walk away then turned back. “I will find a way for us to talk. Now is not a good time. Run along to your class. You’re late.”

Devin hesitated but then obeyed. He ran through the door and all the way to his class. When the teacher asked why he was late he said he was sorry and would make sure to be on time from now on, but he never answered her question.

“Good job!” said the voice in his head. “I’m glad you’re not a liar. Now pay attention to Ms. Stone. You need to learn as much as you can at this school as fast as possible. I’ll talk to you later.

“Why?” Devin said aloud. Several students turned to look at him. “I mean what did I miss?”

A boy from India named Daric told him Ms. Stone was talking about gene splicing and the creation of new species. Since Kevin stopped talking to him he paid close attention. The class would be attempting to create a new species in a few months.
