Mercy
Chapter 17

Roza knew she still held a little resentment towards Nikolai. The hurt she held inside for all those years was still there. However, if she was being honest with herself, knowing him for the past few weeks, she has come to see that he wasn’t a bad man. He was a good man and Alpha.

After speaking with him, she understood why he walked away, even though it was cowardly. He protected her and their son while they were here. He went into a flaming house to grab their son without a second thought. He stood in front of her when she was being attacked by a rogue.

Roza knew that her feelings for him were blooming again. The bond was growing stronger every day. She often found her eyes trailing to his when they were in the same room. There were moments in these past few weeks where she would seek him out because her wolf and her were feeling antsy. It was inevitable. She could say no and leave, but she knew that it would only hurt her and Maksim.

Waking up the next morning after speaking with Nikolai, she has come to a decision. For the first time, she quickly got up, cleaned herself up, and got dressed. Throwing on a dark green t-shirt and a pair of dark denim skinny jeans, she hopped out the door trying to pull on her sneakers. She went in search of Nikolai.

She walked all over the pack house until she stopped a maidservant and asked where Nikolai was.

“They are out back on the east wing, finishing it up before the fall season hits.” She replied.

Roza thanked her before running out the door. She opened it and ran down the hill towards the east wing. When they were in her sights, she saw that Nikolai was again hunched over a table reading a floor plan. Maksim sat on the table tracing over the floor plan with a pencil.

Nikolai frowned and leaned back to look at Maksim. Roza could see Nikolai’s mouth moving before it twitched. His frown slightly slipping as Maksim gave him a blank stare back. Roza could see that Maksim has no clue as to what his father just scolded him on.

She could run straight towards them, but the middle field was occupied with Dimitri training the other half of the pack warriors. She ran around them and closer to the east wing building. Her heart was racing in her chest as she knew what was coming up. She was nervous to tell him what she had decided and wondered what he will say.

“Nikolai.” She called out as she neared them.

“Mommy.” Maksim pointed to her with a goofy grin. Roza smiled at her son’s response. Nikolai looked up from his paper to Roza. His calm face transformed into a horrified expression.

“Roza!” He roared dropping what was in his hands as he ran down the hill towards her. She stopped in her tracks. Turning to see what had him all freaked out, she saw a huge log about to be chopped off completely -- falling in her direction.

It happened fast.

Too fast for her to react.

She screamed as the tree fell with amazing speed towards her. She thought this was going to be the end for her. She wasn’t going to get to say that she wanted to try with Nikolai. Her scream was cut short when her body was flung a couple of yards from where she stood. She fell to the ground with a great amount of force. When she opened her eyes, everyone was shouting and running towards the fallen tree.

Underneath the tree was Nikolai.

Her eyes widened as his wolf was not moving.

Her heart stopped beating and she felt the air being squeezed out of her chest.

“No. No. No.” She shouted and scrambled to her feet as she ran like crazy towards Nikolai. She grabbed his wolf’s cheeks and lifted his face. The log had fallen completely on him. Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the (F)indNƟvᴇl.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“Nikolai!” She said in a frantic voice.

She glanced at the tree and attempted to move it off, but it was a very big log. Another body came up next to her and grabbed the log and soon more bodies came and they were able to lift the log off from Nikolai. She fell to her knees. Dimitri came up next to her. He felt for a heartbeat.

“He’s alive but his heartbeat is very faint.” Dimitri said.

Roza glanced around until she saw a flat wooden board.

“Put him on here.” She grabbed onto the sides and dragged it over. Another warrior came to help. They placed it next to Nikolai.

“We are not sure what is damaged and we need to be as careful as possible in moving him to the board.” She ordered. “We need to get him back to the medical wing.”

Dimitri nodded and together, with the help of another warrior, carried Nikolai onto the board. They lifted him up. Anna came by and picked up Maksim while this was happening so that he couldn’t see. Roza ran after Dimitri and the warrior as they ran back to the pack house.

Upon arriving at the medical wing, the smell of cleaning supplies can be smelled. Doctor Trevin came running out of a double doorway with a hospital bed. They placed Nikolai on the cart and he was about to roll Nikolai back through the double doors when he saw Roza clinging onto the bed, not letting go.

“You have to let go. I need to check him immediately and there is no time to waste.” He ordered.

“He will be fine? Right? Doctor?” She questioned her eyes frantically looking at him. “Please tell me he will be alright!”

“Roza, please, you have to let go.” Doctor Trevin ordered and glanced behind her.

Dimitri came to her side and she struggled out of Dimitri’s grip. “Let me go! I need to tell him! I need to tell him that I want us to try!”

“Shhh...” Dimitri tried to calm Roza. She struggled harder as she cried.

The thought of losing Nikolai forever and not getting a chance to tell him she loved him. It killed her inside and she struggled harder.

“Roza, please, you have to stop struggling. You won’t be able to do anything.” Dimitri reasoned gently.

“It’s not fair, Dimitri. He said he wanted to try and I was going to tell him I wanted to try too. Why, Dimitri? It was all my fault.” Her mind was going back to the incident. “God, I’m so fvcking stupid.”

She cried and when Dimitri couldn’t hold her any longer, he released her. She ran to the double doors that were now locked and looked through the small glass window. She hoped that he was okay. She needed him to be okay. Maksim needed him.

They needed him.

A few hours later, Doctor Trevin walked out. Roza practically shot out of her seat and ran up to him.

“How is he?” She started and when the doctor wasn’t answering fast enough she clutched at Doctor Trevin’s coat. “Tell me!”

He gently patted Roza’s shoulder. “Calm down, Roza. He is doing fine. He is lucky to have been in his wolf form when the log hit him. If he was in his human form, he would’ve died on impact.”

Roza’s face paled and Doctor Trevin saw that she was about to panic again and so he rushed to finish.

“His wolf is very weak from protecting him in every way he can but he, being that he is an Alpha, is fighting.” He assured.

His face fell a little and Roza gripped his coat tighter. “What aren’t you telling me?”

He hesitated and glanced at Dimitri who also stood close by. His stance was rigid as he listened to the news. Doctor Trevin glanced back at Roza.

“Because of the impact, he might have risk of paralysis. I also did a CT scan to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. He might have optic nerve damage due to the blunt trauma to his head.”

Roza’s eyebrows furrowed. Dimitri growled in frustration before he spoke. “Are you trying to say that we don’t know if he is going to be blind or not?”

Doctor Trevin hesitated once again before nodding. “We won’t know anything until he wakes up.”

“How long?” Roza asked quietly.

Doctor Trevin looked back at her. She spoke louder this time. “How long until he is awake?”

“That we don’t know either.” He said with regret.

“The pack-” Dimitri started.

Roza turned to look at Dimitri. “Go and calm them down. Tell them that the Alpha is okay for now.”

He nodded and walked away. Roza turned back to Doctor Trevin. “Take me to him.”
